This is gonna offend a lot of the bootyblasted reactionary demographic, but it’s actually really easy to not be called bigoted by progressives. If you think it’s difficult at all, it is a personal failure on your part and nobody is required to cater to and make exceptions for your bad behavior.

Oh yes, everyone who doesn’t bow to the left indoctrination has failed, failed in being a complete retard. LOL
Congratulations to Gina Carano, for not being a complete retard.

Kindly do not use the R word around here again. It’s offensive.

If there is a good reason to be pissed off at Disney this week, it’s that they have shuttered Blue Sky studios forever, (which they got in the Fox deal) putting hundreds out of work and scuttling their latest animated film Nimona, when it was less than a year from completion!

Disney will make money off of the corpse, as the Ice Age characters are worth more to them than the studio that actually created them. Sadly, only animation fans will notice or care about such things.

Aside from the hospital scene, (which was cut after the opening weekend in the U.S, and not in any UK version to my knowledge) I’m not aware of any other variations. Are you able to take screenshots?

Some foreign prints had Jack’s typed pages in different languages as well as the title cards.

Restoring every variation of the “All work and no play…” scene in different languages would be an interesting side project (not to mention the foreign title cards as well). Being a native French speaker, I’m especially curious to see pages that read “Un tiens vaut mieux que deux tu l’auras”.

However, I don’t expect to see these pages in Japanese. It looks like these adaptations (as they are not direct translations) were all done using the latin alphabet with the same typewritter : https://theoverlookhotel.com/post/18776071001/italian-il-mattino-ha-loro-in-bocca-the.

As soon as I am able to grab anything, I will let you know. I bought this LaserDisc off eBay, and it’s shipping directly from Japan, so it will take a while. The LaserDisc player I bought might not work at all (it was surpringly cheap), so I am not holding my breath.

While looking for the Japanese version, I came across this shot of Jack Nicholson in an old tv ad. I know it’s a different take from the final movie, but does the open matte version of your 35mm print has so much headroom?

It’s the entire frame, so lots of headroom. In one or two scenes bits of lighting equipment can be seen, and an overhead microphone can be seen in Jack’s closeup when he talking to Lloyd. Given that the rest of the film seems to have used wireless mikes, (if you’ve seen the making of doc Jack is seen removing one taped to his body) I found that interesting!

A few screenshots just to give you an idea of dimensions etc.
I don’t think there’s any extra information in the image.

Thanks for the images! I see a bit more headroom than other open matte transfers. I would be interested in seeing the whole thing one of these days.

Han Shoots First - Any valid reason to not have Han shoot first?

One thing everyone can agree on is Greedo got SHOT. You don’t see blasters do that kind of damage very often. Greedo’s brothers (Slotho, Envio, Prideo, etc.) had to have a closed casket funeral. His childhood friend, Walz, committed suicide from grief.

Stop making me feel sorry for Greedo… you’re backing up George’s argument that Han shouldn’t have been a ‘cold-blooded killer’!

In an seriousness, I disagree with the change but I do understand George’s motivation behind it. He didn’t want Han’s easiness around shooting because he felt threatened to be considered ‘cool’ or whatever, but then of course Han goes on to kill a load of stormtroopers and sometimes unarmed Imperial officers on the Death Star; pacifism has always been played fast and loose in Star Wars, especially when on a one-on-one basis. Not least because the original scene, where the explosion happens suddenly in front of Han before the cut, is so much better - and the altered scene throws that pacing off - if I was doing a fan edit, I wouldn’t change it.

The only unarmed officers might have been in the control room above the hangar, but those guys would have pulled an alarm switch if Han hesitated. Pretty sure all the detention block chaps were armed.

Thank goodness George didn’t want any moral ambiguity about a guy who smuggles drugs for a giant space slug. 😉

I was trying to figure out when the closing credits were changed to white. I have a copy of the second ABC tv broadcast from 1985, (white credits) but not the 1983 network debut. (I doubt there is any differences there.) I don’t think the actual lettering ever changed.

Does the UK broadcast have the profanity dubbed over and Room 237 ghost covered in a creepy fog? That’s interesting that the credits were still blue! If you get the chance to do an A/B comparison with the DVD or Blu-Ray it could be enlightening.

The early Japanese LD I used to have had mild censorship of Room 237 ghost. There was once a clip on The Overlook Hotel site, but tumblr prudishly removed it.

Star Wars 2006 GOUT DVDs - is it still worth buying them?
Time

I have to imagine the 2006 unaltered DVD transfers will look like complete ass on any modern TV, but every so often I’ll watch movies on my PC at my desk, and if I’m using a highly customizable media software like VLC player where I can finnagle with the aspect ratio and zoom and sharpness and all to my heart’s content, the GOUT makes serviceable viewing.

They were barely acceptable at the time as the major studios were more fully supporting 16:9 by then. And people forget the GOUT transfers are actually the THX Laserdisc masters from 1993! They were never the best transfers of the OT to begin with, with flaws visible even on the 20-inch analog tv I owned at the time.

The only thing worse is some of the deep catalog made on demand titles Fox was releasing as late as 2012 in glorious pan and scan.

I used the original version of the scene for my ANH project, mainly because Greedo shooting first is a total fuckup.

I did emulate the subtitles pretty well using Harmy’s and Catbus’ projects as reference.

I decided not to replace the flash frame of the Greedo dummy with a better looking frame from earlier, as Darth Editous had done, because I avoided non-harmonizing-OT-and-SE changes, though I wonder if that one might’ve been better to do.
