You seem to be under the naive impression that if we all act nice and cozy with Georgie Porgy, that he'll suddenly change his mind, delete all the SE and SSE crap, and happily release the OT versions. Sorry, but that ain't gonna happen until Lucas dies (if then) as he wants the SSE 2004 version to remain the definitive one, at least until he decides to change it again.

But one thing is sure, Lucas will never release the OT. He has stated this, and it is the only logical course of action for a madman intent on combining the two trilogies. If you believe otherwise, then have fun in your fantasy land.

Me, I live in the real world, where Lucas is an insane despot and where the OT is something you burn to DVD-R.

No, I never said that giving Lucas a big hug was going to help. I said that calling him names and attacking anybody who comes on this board with differing opinions definately WILL NOT help.

You know how many people I meet in a day who have no idea about what's going on with the OT? If I called everyone who liked the re-inserted ANH Jabba scene an "idiot asshole fanboy etc. etc.", I wouldn't be very well liked. (But then again, we're talking about real life here, not the anonymity of the internet...). Instead, I tell them about what Lucas has been doing with the changes, and his refusal to release the original edits on DVD, and their usual response is something along the lines of "No shit? I didn't know that. That's fucked up." And suddenly, we have somebody with that seed planted deep in their heads. We have another convert and supporter. I then direct them to this site and the rest writes itself.

You, Sam_Lu, I've seen personally attack just about every person who comes on these boards with a differing opinion. It doesn't matter if they support us but still like the SE's, you throw demeaning remarks their way for not spending their lives hating Lucas. It's childish and purile. Hell, you're accusing me of living in a fantasy world, simply because I don't agree with your personal take on the situation. Are you this lacking in fundemental social graces?

Christ man... Lucas hasn't been able to stay the course of any statement he's made so far. Why do you think that the promise of money can't sway him on the OT issue? If you really don't think anything can EVER be done, then you must realize that all you're doing is wasting bandwidth bitching about it, right?

Nevertheless, now that I've droned on about the idea that maybe treating everyone like shit isn't going to get anything done... I'll leave you all with this very special message:

Great we haven't had a Lucas raped my childhood thread for a few hours.

ie this kinda crap

But you are whining. Constantly complaining about the prequels and the SE changes. Constantly. Complaining. Constantly.

And the guy is right... there seems to be little on this board anymore other than "Lucas has ruined my entire existance by not releasing his movies the way I want them" threads. Try to funnel a little of that angst into getting something done about it... obviously bitching alongside a dozen people who already agree with you isn't going to accomplish jack. And since you seem incapable of being respectful of anybody who doesn't agree with you 100%, you shouldn't expect much in life to go your way, much less a multi-billionaire listening to your opinions of what you want him to do with his movies.

For fuck's sake, I agree with you that the original versions need to be released on DVD, but your attitude isn't going to win many people over to our side. This is exactly why I lurked for a year or so before my first post...

And yet here you and Sam_Lu are... whining.

It's funny how Lucas' stance that his vision is all that matters is considered crap, and your ideas being all that matter are to be taken as gospel truth, even going to far as personally attacking anybody who might find something worthwhile in the prequals or SE's.

Do I think the SE's needed to be made? No. Do I think the prequels are flawless? No. Do I think Lucas has probably gone completely off his rocker? Hell yeah I do.

But everybody is entitled to their opinion, and Sam_Lu posting five "I hate Lucas, anybody who disagrees is an idiot fanboy" threads a day is getting a little tiresome.

Perhaps a little positive action? Try going out and talking to actual people about the problems inherant in what Lucas is doing... make some headway for fuck's sake, instead of spending all day on a message board, preaching to the choir about how much you hate the SE's. WE KNOW ALREADY. THAT'S WHAT THIS BOARD IS ABOUT.

Probably someplace like Kinkos, look into their high end laser printers, might be a buck or two per page, but the image quality should be pretty good. You'll need it printed out on legal sized sheets most likely, the width of the image pushes the printable boundries of letter size.

Oh, I didn't actually make that image for the bonus disc. It's from... I think one of the books in the Definitive LD set if I'm remembering correctly. I just cleaned it up a bit and slapped it on the cover. (Heh heh... that's the one image that didn't take 4 hours of photo editing to get logos and text removed! )

Thanks man. I'm just trying to do something worthy of the movies themselves, and worthy of the excellent choices in features and quality we have thanks to those who decided to jack their LD players into their computers one day and preserve a classic.

Y'got yer pick of silver (to match the official release of the "original" trilogy) and gold (to match the prequel DVDs).

Actually, look around in that thread there, you might find lots of things you like.

Yeah, I hear ya there. Not to mention I just sat there staring blankly at the screen for the better part of half an hour trying to think of what I'd put on the back before I decided to just make it generic, and thus, blank. (I think it looks kinda sleek with no clutter on the back though.) Probably should have just opted out myself, but I figured that the Dr. Gonzo discs deserved the 4th cover at least.

Since the TR47 and Dr Gonzo versions are the most popular transfers available, what do you think about doing a set of covers intended to be used in slim double cases to hold both discs? Basically everything would be about the same but you would need to put something on the back to show this is a two disc set and list the features of both.

Just an idea.... I'm going to have to devote another shelf to Star Wars soon

Keep up the great work... those covers are smokn'

AARRRRGGHHHH!!! I'm never gonna get started on my other sets!!

Seriously though, that's not a bad idea. Though I'm not sure how much demand there would be for something like that. Maybe I can just make a generic cover for each movie, and the discs themselves would just be labled by version. That way, the covers could be used for ANY version, including those not made yet, and even for slim multi-cases. Plus, it'd be a lot easier to do, so I can get started on the artsy sets I've been thinking about for a while now.

But if you really want a set like you discribed, I'll do it, you just gotta WANT it! How bad d'ya want it?

Alright, I'm pulling this message over from another thread, hopefully it can provide a little help for you. As for the scaling issue... as long as the things were originally designed at the correct size, it should automatically print at the right size. (It's been so long since I printed anything out though, that I can't be 100% sure anymore! )

Good luck man!

As has been mentioned here numerous times, Kinkos is a great place to get your DVD Covers printed... especially if you don't have a good printer at home.

That being said, if you have a decent color printer at home and don't mind running through your ink then this is what I do and it works great for me:

HP PhotoSmart Photo Printing Software

You don't have to have an HP Printer to use this great software. In fact, I am using an Epson Stylus Photo R300M.

This is what I do, first, you will need to create a new print layout using "Legal" sized paper. Set this new layout to 10.8 inches wide and 7.25 inches tall.

Now, use this new "Legal" sized Layout (10.8 x 7.25) and then load up the image file you need to print.
Drag the photo over from the left (thumbnails) to the page preview on the right. You may have to adjust the image position but don't worry, it will come out fine.

Okay, now that you have the page ready, select "Print..." from the "File" menu and when the dialog appears, select the "Properties" button... you should see this to the right of the Printers list.

In the "Paper Options" section, make sure to select "Legal".

I know you are probably thinking... where the hell do I get "Legal" sized photo paper... well, years ago this would be a problem but in the age of borderless photo printing most printers will have no problem using a "Letter" sized sheet to print on with the "Legal" paper setting as long as the photo will actually fit on the page.

With that said though, do NOT select "borderless" when printing your DVD Covers.... the "borderless" feature will crop and stretch your photo to print on the selected paper size and that is not what we want.

I would recommend a semi-gloss or "satin" photo paper for use in printing DVD Covers. Hell, my wife works in Digital Photo Restoration so we have some great photo paper but when it comes to printing DVD Covers I use the Cheap stuff:

Burlington PrintWorks Satin Photo Paper (90 bright) - 8.5 x 11
Product #00470
http://www.myPrintWorks.com

You can pick this up at Target of all places.

Cheap stuff but prints DVD Covers great

One word of caution... you know how HP and Epson always tell you that you should use paper made by them for the best quality... well, there is some truth to that. The big difference is the drying time. Epson and HP custom make their photo paper to work with their ink and thus the ink will dry on their paper faster. That being said, make sure to be careful if you print on cheaper paper such as the Burlington Printworks paper I listed above. Give it some good drying time and after you cut it out and slap it into your DVD Case you will just sit back and say "damn, that looks good"

Well, of course a half way decent printer helps too

I hope that helps... sorry I have no idea of what to do on the Mac... I'm a programmer and not a Graphic Artist so I use a PC.

Good Luck

Oh, I wasn't trying to sound insulted there!

I just wasn't sure if you were asking for different designs or different printing options.

As for the printing options, I would highly suggest trying out some nice photo paper on your home printer. You'd be amazed how much good the glossy finish does for the image. Small issues with any lack of detail or resolution from using a home printer disappear with the right photo paper.

The right design and the right paper, and after you slip them into a case, you can't tell that they weren't professionally printed.(Unless your printer really sucks. Like mine does right now, and is why I'm getting a new Epson as a replacement.)

Again, I don't think you've got a lot of choices given the subject matter. You could always buddy up with some Kinkos employees, save yourself the suspicious looks.

Professionally printed? Or professionally designed?

I think photoedited high-res bitmaps with gradient-wash skies and vector logo design make for a fairly professional presentation... but maybe that's just me. If it would help, we can always charge you for the covers... y'know, like the pros do.

As for professionally printed... probably Kinkos, or maybe a photo restoration shop, since most of them will be able to do the high resolution prints onto high grade photo paper.

Speeding up Torrent downloads
Time

Alright, that last suggestion was probably based on the idea that you are running on a cable-modem connection. (300kB/s?!? Awesome!) But since you have DSL, things are likely going to be a little different.

What's happening is that you are having your bandwidth choked out by all the uploading, and so the ACKs (acknowledgements, I think I've got this part correct), which confirm that you've received your download data are getting screwed up/pushed aside. You need to limit the amount of upload bandwidth so that you have some overhead left for the little bits of confirmation data which are sent when you recieve a packet of data.

First of all, get a copy of Azureus 2.0.4, install it and set the "default max upload slots" to 3, and the "global max upload speed" to 80% of your upload bandwidth in kilobytes. Now be careful, 'cause the upload bandwidth takes a little math. Companies advertise in kiloBITS, not kiloBYTES. You're gonna have to divide by 8 to get the target number. Then multiply that number by .8 (to get 80%). This leaves you with some overhead for outgoing data other than the uploads of files. Now remember, don't get nutty and set this really low, thinking that you'll get faster downloads, cause you won't. Your torrent download speed is based on your upload speed, so you need as much upload bandwidth as possible without choking your connection (hence, 80%).

For example, if your line is advertised as:
a) 768/128, then you have 128kb of upstream bandwidth. Set your max upload to 13kB. (128 / 8 = 16 x .8 = 12.8 round this to 13)
b) 1.5/256, then your target number is 25kB (256 / 8 = 32 x .8 = 25.6 round this to 25)

I have a 1.5/256 line, and I find that on many torrents, I get about 100kB/s to 120kB/s speeds... sometime I hit 150kB/s or so. Not bad, considering I had all 20 episodes of Clone Wars in a couple hours, and this is still pretty close to the theoretical 192kB/s limit on my DSL line. Odds are, you have either a 128k or 256k upstream, but if you're not sure, assume it's 128k. I often see that I'm only uploading at 10kB/s to 12kB/s, and still breaking the 100kB/s download mark. The thing is, BitTorrent is really more of a techie's trade, as where Kazaa is more for the layman. However, stick with it and break outta that shell... 'cause Kazza sucks ass and torrents are much more "community friendly", if you take my meaning.

As to where you actually plug these numbers in, look under "Configuration" in the "View" menu. Also, lots of help can be found at Azureus's website. I'm just trying to give you a shortcut to the specifics and the numbers.

Also look into port forwarding if you are using a firewall or router. Just try to avoid the "default" ports for torrent clients, since sometime they are blocked by ISPs, and other times they become targets for hackers. You should onyl worry about the TCP ports, but I've got some UDP ports forwarded as well since Azureus has a setting that uses them as well.

Hope this helped a little!
