Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

According to the info on the other forum (amps) there was an issue with some part giving out in the equipment and it would be a moment before that member has the money to replace the parts. Once that's done, there are some other projects that need finishing before Song of the South is converted.

Cool enough.  We've all waited this long already, so a little more time isn't that big of a deal if it does mean seeing this in 1080p from the 35mm source in the end.

A few questions:

(1) how is SHEENA, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990), etc more mainstream than ALIEN or STAR WARS?  If MySpleen was going to be pulled for violation of copyright infringement, it would have happened a long time ago.

(2) if a private tracker like MySpleen isn't safe enough, how is Uploaded safe enough (especially after what happened to MegaUpload, Fileserve and other file sites a few years ago)?

(3) as far as people helping you out, you know all you really have to do is ask.  I would like to think that most of us here are cool and laid back enough to let people know what you need/would like, and if we can help out.

The bottom line is: this is your stuff.  You guys on TB are doing all the hard work creating these, and like all of the other fan edits and the like, you are sharing them with the rest of us for free.  BUT... let us not pretend that you are not acting a bit like Angel

At the very least, will you consider another file sharing service like Google or Netload?

PS: this is strickly in regards to MS (or just having any available place to download the movies).  I've never asked for you or anyone else to spend $20+ creating a BD-R with cover art and send it to me for free, as I can take care of that myself.  All I really need is a working link, provided that the user/creator wants to share.

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of Luke's X-Wing entering Tattoine's orbit and landing near Ben's Hut or something like that.

Neither would I.  In fact, I think JEDI needs a few more scenes of spaceships landing and taking off.

They've done it like a million times from way back in the days of The Crow and up through Tron: Legacy: taking a current star (or actor/stunt double/etc.) and superimposing another (and sometimes younger) face on them.  Even Episode I had Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson's faces superimposed over their stunt doubles for a couple of shots.  I'm sorry, but they can totally do it.

being able to do it and being able to do it convincingly are two completely different things. The Crow was just a few brief straight on shots. All the head replacements/ digital doubles in the prequels looked terrible. The Jeff Bridges digital younger self still suffered with the "uncanny valley" problem that plagues CG human creations. They still can't do it convincingly to this day.

True, but in T:L they really just needed to either take scenes of Jeff from earlier movies and CG the background, or find a lookalike and dub over him with Bridges.    The basic gist of what Kristarwars speaks of "can" be done, but only judiciously and with a lot of thought, planning and skill.  Even then, you can't film entire scenes with extended dialogue short of lookalikes or time machines.

Even so, is there really a need to do all of that extra "molesting Leia" stuff, short of doing a Hentai or whatever?  Isn't the point kind of made just by showing her in the golden bikini?

But (and that's a big, fat but).. if you HAVE to do it, why not just keep it to CGing some slime on her face constantly dripping off from where Jabba uses her like a lollipop?  What?  Too much?

Or you can print off a bunch of those "Leia molested by Gamorrean Guards" pics, hand them out to the audience and right when the camera cuts to Leia in the slave outfit for the first time, the movie pauses and an ole timey silent movie-ish title pops up that says "open your packet now and see the horrors of the life of a slave girl".

You both seem to want to insert them to unify the two trilogies (I'm guessing?). I'd rather do it the other way around. There's nothing even vaguely interesting about them.

Tarkin all the way.

Would it be conceivable to take scenes from some of the Hammer blu-rays of Peter Cushing in his slightly younger years and use some of those shots to put a younger Tarkin into the PTs?  Maybe show Tarkin having a few speaking lines via a viewscreen? *

* If not as a re-occuring character, then at least to over-impose over top the "Scorpius" actor who still looks nothing like Peter Cushing in ROTS.

This is an old one, but in regards to the first pages subject of Yoda in the Prequels.. would it be possible to do Yoda akin to the Wizard in THE WIZARD OF OZ, to the degree that you never see him as the tiny muppet, but only as an imposing hologram (maybe this is where Palpatine gets his idea of communication from)?  Maybe through bit players added in, it could be suggested that not only is Yoda never seen, but no one knows where he lives... that those Jedi who reach the level high enough to be trained by hm are given the "hood over the head and thrown in the car trunk" treatment, so when they come to they don't know they're on Dagobah.*

* Yes, Obi tells Luke to go to the Dagobah system in EMPIRE, but the procedures the Jedi had would have been long gone, and things being what they were, I don't think Ben had the time to beat around the bush anymore.

In regards to Tattooine in JEDI, there is nothing saying that Jabba isn't located on a different part of the planet that ISN'T a desert.. we ARE talking about an entire planet.

Same thing with the prequels.  You can either call it something else other than Tattooine, or use CG and other methods to create greens and different colors (as well as other alterations to the basic and background scenery) to differentiate it with what we see in ANH.

I would consider getting rid of Jabba's scene in TPM (as in: he's not on Tattooine yet) and insert him on Geonosis, per the idea above that the events in the prequels led him to becoming a thief and a scoundrel.

I like the idea of using Prowse for the unveiled Vader scenes.  His voice would have to be altered to a lower pitch (to account for Jones' voice coming out the mask), but otherwise would be a nice way of acknowledging the man who wore the suit in all 3 OT films.

Sound in space is sometimes handwaved by creators as something that the ship's computer creates for the benefit of the pilots. I can buy that, I suppose...

Wait, what?

Basically, if someone farts outside the Millennium Falcon in space, the onboard computer will simulate the sound of a fart so that it will appear that the guy's fart in making noise through the hull of the ship, even though there really is no fart sound passing through the vacuum of space.

Frankly, it's a stupid explanation, just like "relativistic shielding".

Don't let the writers of FAMILY GUY read this.. you KNOW what will happen next.

I just had a weird thought (a tad off topic) while thinking about the parallels between Episode I and SW (Ep IV).

Amidala is the MacGuffin of Episode I. She is the Death Star plans.

But she's clearly never going to sign it, so when the data's analyzed a weakness will not be found. :)

Unless they find her exhaust port.  Then they could send in one-man fighters to fly down her trench and drop a proton torpedo.  Victory achieved!

Sorry for the question, but has adywan already started working on the HD version of ANH? I found this http://aggeiw.deviantart.com/gallery/ . Is this some sort of leaked images from the upcoming edit?

No, i haven't started work on ANH:R HD yet.

That is Angel's Deviantart gallery. Looking at those new colour correction shots, he certainly does like his blues. lol. He does have a very different idea of what Star Wars should look like. I have to say i really don't like that colour correction, especially the sandcrawler scenes.

Even if he can be an arsehole at times, you still have to admit:

(1) he has talent

(2) he has some interesting ideas.  The recoloring of the Falcon to match it's look in EMPIRE?  I think that's pretty awesome.  Same thing with tilting Tatooine in the opening shot to match all subsequent shots (or flattening Tatooine in the following shots to have continuity), and while I could go either way on a lot of the color timing alterations, he still has some really good ideas on spatial composition.

That was my first ever edit submitted to this site, quite a few years ago.....Ian says 'Luke' on the 'A Musical Journey' DVD.....but sadly my edit has been removed from youtube

I still have it, I'll upload it to vimeo later

J

Didn't you also make that mockup of the enlarged AT-AT foot too? I can't seem to find it so I assume YouTube deleted that too.

THAT is one of the changes I'm looking forward to the most.  One of my pet peeves in movies from the late 70's through 80's is the inconsistency in sizes of objects (the Nostromo is anywhere from 800 feet long to 1600 feet long depending on the shot, from outside or inside the ship).

Also, this may have been addressed already, but I was watching this clip:

ESB:R gantry matte test

I was wondering if:

(1) the window Luke is thrown out of will be altered from the orange-brown look to match the appearance of the interior Luke was thrown out from.  Granted, you wouldn't be able to see details per se (due to the distance), but shouldn't it be darker with the sense of internal light than the bright, flat orange hue?

(2) same with the pulsing yellow lights on the end of the gantry Luke eventually drops from (which may be on there, but may be too small to notice on the youtube video)

(3) again, probably already addressed, but would the carbonite chamber (the spherical section above the "Luke window") be larger to accomidate the set?

Come ROTJ you would then just have to edit out the line about her dying when Leia was young.

And the whole part where Vader learns that Luke has a... siiiister.

Take out the "so" and it's Vader's last revelation that he knew all along that Leia was his daughter (even when they were snogging). instead of learning it from Luke Vader uses this information to try and break Luke by rubbing his nose into how useless Ben was at hiding the information from him.

He kept her alive on the Death Star and on Bespin in much the same way he refrained from killing Luke.

Just an idea.

Veeery eenteresting, Bingo.. though how would you explain him torturing Leia both in the Death Star detention block and on Bespin?  Is he like Dario Argento and just likes to do kinky things to his daughter (and possibly film it)?

Here is an idea: get one of those guys on youtube who does the James Earl Jones voice work and rejigger or redo some/most/all of Vader's JEDI lines so at the least he doesn't sound like he is so pussy whipped.

I would also suggest cutting a second (or even split second) from the Luke-Vader duel to get rid of the obvious "knee" Vader takes to give Luke the opportunity to whack his arm off.  I ALWAYS hated that.  I still think it would be cool to have Luke mentally throwing random debris at Vader during that last attack to mirror EMPIRE to explain how Luke can beat Vader so easily... I never bought Luke just thrashing his way to victory.

I remember seeing that clip of Han and Lea talking where Ady was experimenting and added "breaths". I thought it looked pretty good, almost perfect.

No doubt it would require a whole lot of work adding this subtle detail to almost all of the Hoth scenes (much more than if he decides to add some extra bug-life on Dagobah, in only a few outdoor scenes), but if it could be done convincingly (key word), it would certainly go a long way in adding realism to these locations (making them less like sets). It is up to Ady if it's worth it :)

It would be neat if done correctly, but it would be a lot of work. While I agree with most of Ady's changes in making the films seem more realistic (and I'm in favor of some bug-life on Dagobah), this may be one of those things that could end up being more time consuming than it's worth. I never watched Empire and thought, "Han and Leia don't look very cold in that hallway."

But I did think Carrie Fisher looked rather hot.

Han: "You know it's dangerous for you to be around the frozen food section."

Leia: "Why's that?"

Han: "Because you're gonna melt all this stuff."

One suggestion for the first TERMINATOR is to boost/enhance the bass elements.  I have the KingKong666 recolored version from TP as well as the modified mono with the ".1" track from the DVD.  The thing is.. the sound is still pretty weak, short of cranking up the volume on my receiver.

Also, have you guys considered cleaning any of the FX (such as the laser coming from the HK tank in the side scrolling shot in the future flashback that comes out a good inch below the laser barrel)?

I often have found myself asking, "Empire is so good. How is it possible the PT turned out so bad?!" Either Collative Learning is right in that Kirshner is a genius, assisted by a team with impeccable attention to detail (i.e. the details of the hand-chopping scene in Pt 2 of his review above), or it was just dumb luck how all the elements came together the way they did. Either way, I enjoy reading Ady's explanations on his decisions and the team's efforts to preserve the integrity of the narrative. Keep up the fine work on making this great film even better!

I think credit should be given to Gary Kurtz.  As soon as Lucas kicked him out of the family for (essentially) taking over EMPIRE, you can see what Lucas' weaknesses are in JEDI and the PREQUELS, especially when you compare them together.

JEDI (much like the prequels) is a lot more childish in nature, regardless of the deeper and more adult thematic elements.  It is like comparing early Disney animated films up to the 1950's to the later year animated films such as 101 DALMATIONS and THE SWORD AND THE STONE (which has a LOT of "derp-de-derp" scenes with kid Arthur tripping over things or falling down just to serve the purpose of making the kids laugh... you know, like Jar Jar).

It is because of how Kirshner and Kurtz worked behind Lucas to make sure Lucas didn't sabotage EMPIRE that, combined with Lucas' divorce, no doubt led Lucas to become so authoritative and controlling.  I also feel that all of the "special editions" are just attempts to stay relevant, as well as constantly show everyone that yes, HE controls STAR WARS and he can do whatever he wants... despite betraying everything he said he believed for the past 2 decades.

You are a Madman and a Scholar... I salute you.

If you have to do some extra work anyways, I say wait until next May as a weird 34th anniversary celebration.  Hell, you could put it out on the very day EMPIRE came out.  That will give you time to watch it all the way through to look for any seams to clean or whatnot.

PS: no need for clips, but will there be some more side turret action from the AT-ATs, especially when you see them moving/aiming at something (and not just the long, thin lasers, but the shorter "mini gun" versions above them)?:

Also, have you tried adding a "glass" reflective effect on the AT-AT window (like above)?  Something else I noticed: the big guns underneath the head have a cylindrical part in the rear of the gun, indicating they can point downwards independently of the head, much like the side guns:

It's the same problem with Qui-gon not being named until the second act of TPM: a character this important and that has this much impact on the plot shouldn't just be some anonymous person. Even if he is mysterious, we should still have something to call him by instead of just "that bounty hunter"

You know, just like that Clint Eastwood character in those western movies in the 1960's... what were those called again?

In regards to the shield generator explosion, would it be possible to manipulate the explosion of the spice factory in this scene from DUNE (as you can work with a 1080p source, push it back further into the background to match the distance of the shield generator and possibly recolor the orange sand to the white of the snow)?:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwPTIEWTYEI

(seen at 1:30)

I would add that however you do the explosion, to include the shockwave (especially the reaction to the sand around the Spice factory) would be a fantastic visual.  I love how it appears that the surrounding area liquifies from the force of the blast.  A major bass punch would be quite effective as well.
