THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

The link to the sample file is broken. Anybody got a backup?

I'm also curious what footage from AOTC was in it and how long was it?

If the Episode II thing was cancelled that's our only glimpse into HD Episode II

(until September, but then we will STILL compare them).

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Buying a box set for just one movie in it seems like a waste of money.

Let's say I'm a big highlander fan, but the only way I could buy Highlander on Blu-Ray was to buy it as part of a box set with the other highlander Films.

Here is how I solve that dilemma... wait until it is available as a stand alone movie.

It WILL happen, either when they release an official stand alone set OR on the used market.

That's how people got their hands on the "bonus disc" from 2004. They didn't have to track down and buy the 2004 set to get it, they just waited until it was available by itself. Problem solved.

So yeah, if it were me, I'd just wait. It's not like the movie will be less good if you don't buy it at Wal-Mart on the day it "comes out." You won't be the first one to see it, after all.

Even if the 1977 cut is beautifully restored with the 70mm six-track mix included for the first time ever? Or would you not buy it unless it was released on its own, and not alongside Empire or Jedi?

If the originals were properly restored and included in the set (and I had a blu-ray player and HD screen)? Sure, I'd buy it then (and only then), though I'd probably wait until it was on sale. :)

The principle for me is not giving Lucas anymore money for sub-standard products in place of the genuine article (the OOT in pristine form). If he does the right thing, he deserves a "vote" from my wallet again.

How many of you watch the Clone Wars series regularly and what do you think of it?
Time

I like it, its kind of like a modern version of marvel star wars, takes Continuity with a grain of salt, Which is fun. I just dislike the obvious modern Lucas touches.

I also dislike that it is not EU and is Canon with the films, but hey whatever George knows best, lol.

Erik i think the live action could be good in certain circumstances. Like Lucas does not direct, and someone else writes the episodes. Guest writers and guest Directors like Young Indy, and up and comers in the industry as well as industry veterans.

As for Clone Wars i think it is really cool Walter Murch is directing an episode for season 4.

I think Return to Oz is unfairly maligned by Critics.

Still he is an incomparable editor, and sound guy.

Although, I really don't care about Star Wars "canon" anymore (and haven't for awhile since the term is really meaningless... it's no guarentee of quality OR continuity), technically the Clone Wars movie and the CGI series are in a category all their own called "T-Canon" (short for TV canon, even though it doesn't include ANY of the other Star Wars shows or movies that have appeared on TV like the Ewok adventures or even the previous Clone Wars series). The "canon" just morphs into whatever they want to include whatever they want. I think the only reason they keep the term at all is because they think fans care about whether something is "canon" or not. Even the films aren't very consistent with one another, and if Lucas himself doesn't care that much, then how much less will the hired writers who are constrained by Lucas' bottom line?

So essentially the CGI series stands alone, even if it appears to be loosely following the movies (like everything else in the SW franchise, it's all loosely following the films). It is certainly not the case that somehow this is "above" or "more real" than the rest of the EU (from the best of it to the worst).

It's sad when a (supposed) kids show is the best thing going in Star Wars. To me it's okay, but it might as well not be Star Wars at all, that's just a hook to get fans to watch it ("omg watch me or you're missing part of the Star Wars story!!!")

My philosophy is that these are just entertainment. I like what I like, regardless of what "level" or "category" it fits into. But it's not like somehow the rest of the EU has vanished in favor of the six films and the CGI series.

I will agree that the TV episodes I've seen were generally better overall than the big screen movie (which felt like an average TV episode anyway). Anakin is generally portrayed as a more likable "hero." Overall, some of the interpretations or ideas of the Prequel stuff is more interesting or cooler at times, but in general the technology seems a lot weaker (bringing Star Wars down to the level of Star Trek, let's say; this is the polar opposite of the previous cartoon series which turned all the main characters into gods, and exaggerated nearly everything's power to silver age comic book level) and the Jedi, if anything, seem even more incompetent than before (a staple of kid's cartoons is that both good guys and bad guys are dumb, though the good guys are just a tiny bit smarter than the bad guys, at least by the end of an episode). So while some episodes are clearly fan-service, it feels like a competely different interpretation of the Star Wars universe, using Prequel (mostly) characters.

What does the blu-ray set have to offer?
Time

I don't plan on buying this set (even if I did happen to have a blu-ray player by September, which itself is doubtful), I do wonder...

Will it have Audio Descriptive tracks?

REALITY CHECK TIME:

Let's not be dreamers here though. Unless you get it first hand from an official source, just assume that whatever feature or cut or scene that you WISH was in it, will NOT be there. The odds that a feature that the fans actually WANT would be in there but not be advertised, is approaching ZERO.

That should save some headaches and people wasting their money.

As far as I'm concerned, this is just going to be the 2004/2005 DVDs in 1080p, and Episode I will be "different" (but not better, in the sense that it's still Episode I, the weakest of the "live action" numbered episodes). I also fully expect the OT extras to be heavy on fluff like the extras on the DVDs were. There's a lot of stuff for Lucas to advertise, like the TV shows, the 3D releases, whatever LucasArts titles are coming out (the Old Republic?), etc.

Remember; 6 months to a year after this release, there WILL be a blu-ray double dip. This is not your "only chance." Remember also that you'll be able to rent this thing, and last but not least, remember the world won't end in 2012. ;)

Chances are this isn't the last time he'll be tinkering with the movies again either. Remember, he's got another six years of theatricl re-tooling to do, which are more opportunities for him to "realize his original vision" and cash-in with another home release.

Take it from somebody who has lived through all the various home releases...

The best case scenario I can see is that in about 7 months I'll be reading some reviews, seeing some screen caps, reading some rants, and watching some clips on youtube, and then perhaps a year from now, I'll see them on the shelf at my local library and then decide if I want to watch them for free, some rainy day, if I haven't been put off by all the reports from disappointed fans by then... ;)

It seems like every time you post a new clip, someone has an issue with the audio, and you have to remind them that you won't work on audio until the video is completely done.  People have such short attention spans! ;-)

Sorry, what?

Just put "RTFM" in your signature or write a FAQ, I suppose. Not everyone spends every day on these forums.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Just to reiterate, the official Star Wars blu-ray trailer out now uses straight 2004 DVD footage of the OT. The saber clash in front of the emperor is the ugly solid color bars, and the rest of the shots are blue tinted. There isn't a hint anywhere that any of the OT footage was touched for this release.

"Disappointing" is hardly the word I would use.

Official Trailer shows evidence of the same flaws as the 2004 edition... color me (pun intended) unimpressed.

Place your bets now on how many times the discs will be re-released!

We must remember the 1997 footage on the 1st 2004 DVD's trailer.

But yes, I find it unlikely that they will fix any colour issue. I shall wait for more info about it before I buy anything.

Actually, I don't remember this. Got a link handy?

(All I recall are a few news programs covering the new release and using old footage (ie: the '97 jabba) probably since they didn't obtain any of the new footage in time... but not official ads.)

Sure, perhaps they're just being lazy in the ads, but until I learn otherwise (from reputable sources, at least), I'm assuming these are the same blue tinted editions (at least where the "Original Trilogy" is concerned) that we got in 2004, albeit in "HD" resolution. I've seen the now infamous "is it new or is it old" ROTJ saber scene a couple of times now, so I don't feel any desire to pay money to watch it one more time in higher quality.

Agreed, I'm with you. "As advertised." When the 2006 editions were coming out, people hoped against hope that the included '04's would have some fixes. Didn't happen (as if there was any reason to hope that such a thing would happen).

I'm not buying it, even if I did have have a blu-ray player and HD TV right now to play it on, I wouldn't buy it. Not because "Lucas sucks" but because I don't want to support another shoddy edition. Certain forums are full of people of course who will say I'm lying and that I'll buy them anyway (because fanboys have no self control and secretly love being scammed), but those people can go kiss a wookiee. ;)

PS: Can anybody tell I'm annoyed by this? Here's how he can un-annoy me... release a properly restored high def edition of the original trilogy and by that I mean an up-to-standard BD featuring the three films as close to their '77-'85 theatrical presentations as possible on the format. Regular release, not some "limited time only" overpriced exclusive deal-o where you have to buy all 6 episodes in a go (I realize he's doing this as all OR each trilogy for no discount, but still). Want to make me really happy? Throw in some vintage extras and properly restored deleted scenes from the 70's and 80's. That's all any of us really want that we're not getting...

PPS: And I don't buy the "well buy this now and that will encourage him to re-release it again," potential argument, because we know all he'll do is change the packaging in future re-releases, not the content. He got a good four years out of the 2004 editions on the format. The only reason he's putting these out now is to get people thinking about Star Wars again to hype the 3D releases. When was Lucas going to start making those "small films that nobody cares about but me" again?

I can forgive flaws in the original films (in their intended theatrical presentation) a lot more than I can crap introduced decades later.

Star Wars on Blu in 2011?
Time

Just watched the official teaser trailer for the blu-ray set.

SURPRISE! The footage from the OT is the same as the 2004 editions (awful blue tints, messed up contrast.... look at the pathetic saber clash).

Not buying it!

(to the people who will say "what about the new deleted scenes?" I say to them one word: YOUTUBE)

PS: Yeah, the DVD of Episode I is not the theatrical cut. I got mine used.
