Snowpiercer (2013) 2/10

I don't understand how this movie got such a good review. The underlining observations about how the world is built and run on the backs of others was all good, but the execution and setting was asinine.

 You are not alone!

I'm not the sort of person who walks out on movies but I walked out of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I was expecting dumb fun but the dialogue was just painful to sit through.

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you it's terrible but......it's terrible.

Is anybody else watching Manh(a)ttan? I'm loving it at the moment.

Set against the backdrop of the greatest clandestine race against time in the history of science with the mission to build the world's first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Flawed scientists and their families attempt to co-exist in a world where secrets and lies infiltrate every aspect of their lives.

I'd forgotten we were so close to release. [11-11-14]

Picked up ALIEN: Isolation a few days ago. I think I'm about halfway through at this point. I wont reveal too much, just want to say the atmosphere is amazing, sometimes I catch myself wandering around staring at the environment...and then I get eaten by a Xenomorph.

Long story short - you're trapped on a partly abandoned space station with a Xeno. There are other Humans, both friend and foe as well as primitive androids that will attack you if you break the rules. It's about 15 Years after ALIEN and you play as Ripley's daughter searching for any indication of what happened to the Nostromo.

it can be pretty tense at times.

The metal man from my nightmares! He's real!

Saw the [second] episode. Thought it was pretty dull. The animation here really isn't good enough to carry a weak storyline for several seasons.

They have an open sandbox to play in with rebels, here's hoping they decide to do something actually interesting. The first episode had hints at potentially interesting stuff.

Windows TEN
Time

Keep in mind this is the company that chose the name XBOX ONE for the third system in the series. I assume it has something to do with wanting to distance themselves a bit from the number 8.

I'm looking forward to it. I'll definitely check out the preview once it's out - tomorrow, I think.

I use windows 8 mostly on Tablets where the touch interface works great.

I'm curious to see what they've kept and what they haven't.

Meanwhile Apple have kindly stuck at OS X for seemingly centuries just to let MS catch-up :-D

And it looks like Microsoft are planning to do the same. It'll be Windows 10 from here on out with whatever updates come along rather than further versions.

In many ways, the Falcon is "home" to our heroes as much as the Enterprise is to Kirk and company.

We didn't get enough of the MF in Jedi, and we never got a scene with Han properly reunited with her. Even Star Trek 4 had a homecoming scene. The Klingon Bird of Prey's bridge set changed from Trek III to give the characters that familiar positioning. Kirk would have looked silly sitting on Kruge's high chair.

The ROTJ deleted scenes with anonymous rebels running around in the Falcon is sort of like watching strangers who have moved into your old house.

There is no beloved hunk of junk in the prequels, and the Jedi seem to change ships more than their socks. ;)

Also in the deleted sandstorm scene from Jedi you can hear Han Solo say something like "hello old girl" just before he goes up the ramp. I don't think they should've cut this scene, or Luke's alternate opening.

The Falcon does have character, though I wonder if it's still going to be as unreliable 30 years on. It would be a bit obvious, but kind of right.

That would be great if they've been apart for a while and he's missed his ship, but surely from his perspective he was just at cloud city.

Full disclosure - I am not an expert on Carbon Freezing.

as fun as that stuff is I think it works better if you can't really be sure if Luke is full of himself or he really has planned for everything.

I'd hope that if the Falcon is featured heavily in the new films that they don't repeat the OT by having is constantly breaking down or barely running.

So I caved and got Destiny. I was still undecided on release day but then all the local retailers slashed about a third off the price so I decided to pick it up.

I think a lot of people were expecting something completely different and I'd say that Bungie have done a pretty poor job of explaining things.

I've just hit level 20 in Destiny and it looks like you can go back and do the story missions at much harder settings, initially there were two skill settings per mission and now there are about 5.

I'm not exactly clear in progression at this point either, it seems to be more based on what you're wearing.

I've also unlocked weekly and daily challenges. Not sure if it will be a mix of things or just strike missions.

on a team is fun but 4 would be better. I've played thru solo and with friends [including the o'fives] and it works well as a co-op experience.

I've been playing it pretty solid for a week and i'm yet to finish the main story. I'd say that's decent value so far given that I can finish a HALO game inside of a day.

With Multiplayer it looks like there is no ranking system so you wind up with players of wildly varying skill levels. There will always be somebody running around with better gear than you. And even if a low level player is good, they just wont have access to good resources yet.

I'm honestly confused.

In February (?) 220 lb American Football Hero Ray Rice was suspended for two games for knocking his fiance out.

Yesterday, he was fired and indefinitely suspended for having knocked his fiance out back in February.

I'm honestly confused. Has something changed? None of the stories are clear. Can any sports-types here help me?

Hold on. You say he punched a woman and also refer to him as a hero?

Kinda poking fun that in America we very often call people who are good at moving balls around a field quickly 'heroes.'

maybe just a cultural divide? - I see you also use the term 'Football' to describe a game where grown men run around, tackle each other and dance.

He should have been dropped lie a rock immediately. His employer is only trying to cover their own ass now that it's public knowledge.

They should be punishing themselves for not having to balls to act when it first happened!

I heard that EA are pulling his likeness from the latest NFL videogame - which I think is already on sale.

pretty much all of the officers came up through the ranks in the war and have the mindset of combat troops seeing everything as a threat plus they will have to get along with races they were fighting in the war,the central question will be how do you ask these people to move from a war mindset to a mission of peace.

I DO like this idea but they did kind of touch on that stuff already in Star Trek 6 -

Gorkon said: You don't trust me, do you? I don't blame you. If there is to be a brave new world, our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it.

So the only superpowers are the Federation and the Romulan star empire...and then Romulus is destroyed by the Hobus star, right?

What happnes next could be very interesting...or very boring.

The Gamma Quadrant is largely a blank canvas at this point, so setting something there could prove interesting, or at least fresh.

One thing we often see in Star trek is a crew of Humans with one or two aliens in the mix.

What if we were to flip things around and have a token 'human' that is the odd man out.

Would that be an interesting enough premise?

I think CBS has done a TERRIBLE mistake NOT to release a standalone Bluray of The Cage this year - you know, the nice new transfer, seamless branching between the original and the CGI effects, a new audio commentary by Leonard Nimoy and the Okudas, a feature-length documentary, deleted scenes, bloopers .... It's Star Trek's 50 anniversary this year for Shatner's sake!

Honestly, How many people would buy that?

For all intents and purposes The Cage was a failure but the episode IS available on bluray already if people are desperate. It would be far more effort than it would be worth.

I think the majority would consider 2016 to be the real 50th Anniversary.

Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit)
Time

The new opening -

I really like the idea of starting with the station and then cutting to the Klingon ships but then we lose the cool Klingon theme music. Given that it cuts out a lot of the badly matted FX shots I wonder if there is still a good 'best of both worlds' approach.

opening with a prologue sequence and then a main title sequence has a very 'television' feel and takes away from the grandeur of a feature film a bit.

I wonder if there is a good compromise to combine main titles with Ilia's theme and some good exposition involving V'ger?

I like the idea of saving the main theme for the Enterprise reveal / leaving spacedock.

I feel like the 'final frontier' speech works better as a closing statement

Vulcan footage as a flashback -

I really like this idea and it plays out well for the most part. there are some moments where several quick cuts look a bit distracting. Maybe this could be resolved by including some of the conversation dialogue [like when McCoy first inquires about Kohlinar] over flashback footage..

I'd also love if you could remove the second time Kirk asks Spock to 'pleeeeease sit down!'. it's just incredibly bad.

I wonder if it would be worth showing the cloud when Spock mentions that he sensed V'ger?

I watched Under the Dome when it first came out but I trailed off when I realised it had almost nothing to do with the book - outside the basic premise and some character names.

Just got back into it. It's good fun but the pacing is very slow and a lot of the story progression requires characters to be complete morons some of the time.

So, exactly like the book then.

 oh no you didn't!
