Help: looking for... 'The X-Files' (1993) - Season 1 to 4 in 4X3???
Time

Cut and dry,
The DVDs need to be preserved for the sake of historical broadcast ratio, but they are such garbage.
The bluray has the best picture and color your going to get, be satisfied.
All film elements were scanned at 2k, and that’s probably the last time they’ll get scanned,
They should have been scanned at 4k, but Fox treats this show like they treat their news channel, any jackass can get on it and insult suicide victims.

I would assume the original broadcast masters would be on a higher resolution tape format, however I can’t find out much about how the original video toaster system worked or what Video tape format was used, so I can’t assume that there is a PAL broadcast element that would sufficiently improve upon the DVDs which look awful compared to HD (sorry purists, I wish they would have BSGd the release so I could have both).
All of that being said if anyone can compare a PAL version to the 480i dvd or laserdisc please assist us.

The dvds and laserdiscs came from tapes, edited with a video toaster so I doubt that any of those are progressive, I assume that the LDs have extra picture information from a master that was both younger and less compressed on LD.
As for HD 4x3 masters, those were also created by the company in charge of the restoration alongside a 16x9 version, and is now somewhere in a vault within the bowels of Fox.
They started mastering in HD in season 5, but those are different masters than the ones used today.
And some parts of the series had to come from the original broadcast masters, hence a shift in quality.
This is also evident in the Twin Peaks bluray release, and TNG, but I bet you already knew this.
The best bet is DVDs, unless you have a hookup at fox and god forbid he has to deal with Rupert Murdoch’s merry band of attourneys, but at least the series isn’t owned by National Amusements.

The netflix versions are 16:9 and were the first signs of a remaster by Fox.
The blurays are 16x9, but the sides opened up, the cinematogrpaher claimed they protected for 16:9, which seemed to be the case as of season 4.
The original dvds are 480i, but I was curious if the Japanese laserdiscs were progressive?
I wanted to start a project for the x files with these factors in mind.

The intro is in serious need of work:
The Font was not correct
The rest was upscaled, at least one shot of the intro can be replaced in HD and that footage is from tooms.
And these fuckups plagued the intro well into season 10.
I also wanted to create a framing master where the 16:9 openings are overlaid over a de-interlaced 4x3 version, still though the main corners would be lost but this would preserve both framing styles.
I wanted to see if I could use Vincent Cheung’s video epitomes to assemble something with them but this project is on hold until I can acquire a computer for the workload I’m going to be frying it with.
Alot of VFX also had to be recreated and I assume that I’ll need to be preserving the original VFX.
I also want to do my own VFX mods to the second episode.

What’s John Hamm’s pricetage again?
I’ll have to find a local actor and shoot them in front of a bluescreen, then shoot myself, lol.
I have to get someone around 45 to 60 who has some decent acting chops then get them in front of a green screen.
I need to get a better than great costume and make them look better than a bad cosplayer and film some scenes.
I guess.
Just hope the composite shot looks good.
And I’ll remember the rule on Y’all, I usually have it down half the time.

Are you gonna edit Hux out of every scene he’s in? That’s a ton of work and will take a lot of skill to pull off. Do you have experience with that kind of editing?

And one more thing, I learn most software by looking at it is a puzzle at first and force myself to learn the interface and techniques.
When I render that first shot and it looks like shit I’m going to fix it and go over it 100 times trying to see where I fucked up and how I can whip it into shape, and in 100 attempts if it still looks like shit, I’ll go over it 1000 times more.
Sadly the source is only 4:2:0,
Both my camera and the bluray, that is already a problem I’m anticipating.

I didn’t want to edit him out of every scene, just several dramatic ones.
And no I don’t but I learn fast so I’m being very arrogant on the topic.
I want to use cinelerra.

The title font in the crawl isn’t wrong, it’s just not the font used in RotJ and the Prequels.

(I’m limiting myself to one critique, and not going to point out how impossible character replacement is.)

(oops)

I’m open to criticism, go ahead and let me have it.

And if my work sucks I’ll make a way, I’ll play with it for years until I figure it out.

I have a few ideas about a possible fan edit I want to do for TFA and I wanted to run it by everyone, do you have any suggestions?
Adiwan’s fan edits gave me some thoughts.

I hated the opening crawl for several reasons, it was to brief, and it read like fan fiction, bad fan fiction, not to mention it was the wrong font, but I didn’t catch this until repeated viewing of the film.

The scene where the first order attacks the village and genocides it needs to be cut in my opinion the scene looked far to small scale and had far to much expository dialogue, and this dialogue was written with no subtlety.
I’m noticing this in alot of new movies is that some of these one on one scenes play out with expository dialoue and remind me of cut scenes from a video game no one wanted to buy.

I know that I want to make Captain Phasma male or eliminate Phasma completely from my cut of the film.
I also want to remove alot of scenes involving Kylo Ren throwing tantrums, I feel this detracts from the power of the villain, how can his character be in such a position of power? He’s like a man who shouldn’t be in power because he tweets insults at people who have discipline, but somehow managed to get there because he’s spoiled, this movie felt like more of a comedy than it did dramatic and I feel that Kylo Ren’s character was Kasdan not being able to resolve the identity crisis in the draft of the film that he flung at J.J. Abram’s empty skull.
I wanted to take the scene where Solo has to confront the space pirates on his freighter and replace the Irish marauder with a more battle scarred Boba Fett as well as possibly add Boba to the Bridge where Solo confronts Ben, also to replace General Hux with Fett at the end.
There are a handful of Hux scenes where I want to replace him with Grand Admiral Thrawn, I despise Hux, he’s far too young and doesn’t demand fear and respect from me.
Hux is a joke…
As for Han solo’s motive for wanting to see his son, Ben being revealed to be his son all through the film ruins the build up, there is no big surprise and takes to much away from the villain, I hate the identity struggle and I felt that Kylo Ren is at war with himself he can either be Ben or Anton Chigurh (I kept getting vibes Driver was trying to imitate Javier Bardem’s performace from “No Country for Old Men”, Anton Chigurh being symbolic of Cold Calculating Evil) the Sith lord with an identity crisis, bit would be more heartbreaking if we don’t see Ben’s lighter personality traits reveal themselves until Han Solo confronts him.
I want to see which deleted scenes I want to put back in to the film.
I also wanted to take the score from when Obi Wan dies in 4, and add it to the scene immediatly after Ren throws Solo off the bridge, starting with Chewey detonating the bombs and screaming in pain for the death of Solo.
The first scene with Snoke can be cut in half since the dialogue in that scene is redundant.
I wanted to borrow another idea from a fan edit, but with my own twist,
I want to add the deleted scene where the squadron jumps to warp, as they come out of warp that’s when the laser wave hit’s the capital, it would magnify that the new republic isn’t as competetant as it should be and magnify the tragedy of Solo’s death.
A good movie is like giving your girl an orgasm,
Most of the film is foreplay so you can build the audience up for a big climax and I want my audience to squirt.

I remember on one of Verta’s legacy vids he showed a closeup of the door before it exploded for Vaders entrance and showed alot of fine detail and Dynamic range on the dodoorin comparison to the bluray where this detail was scrubbed.
Is there anyway you could show some of that to us?
Also I’m excited at the prospect of Adywan being able to use 4k footage.
