still, not really family entertainment

IIRC, in the UK, that sequence was shown during the afternoon slots when ITV broadcast the extended version throughout the mid to late 80s. It's quite tame.

ROTJ LD Preservation Project (* unfinished project? *)

Thanks for the replies. :)

Whether or not to correct the colour is a good question. Whilst working on this project I've given it some thought, I would have to teach myself the techniques because its not something that I'm familiar with.

Perhaps I could produce two versions? One being untouched with "warts and all" quality and the other enjoying a restoration with colour correction and tweaks to remove glitches that were inherited from the LD.

ROTJ LD Preservation Project (* unfinished project? *)
Time

Time for a status update...

I'm approaching the stage where everything is almost ready to assembled into an A/V file. Since this is my first foray into this area, I would really appreciate some advice on how best to proceed.

The video files are spread across three separate Huff captures that total 50 GB. They've been cropped in VirtualDub and I now need to resize them back to 720x480 (in order to make the video a true 16:9?), which software/techniques would you recommend for good results?

I have extracted the LD digital audio as an Audacity project and need to choose a format that will preserve the PCM audio quality. FLAC seems like a good choice because it uses lossless compression and offers substantial savings on file size compared to AIFF and WAV. Again, I'm open to suggestions on alternatives.

For the purists among us, would you appreciate the inclusion of the CBS/FOX Dolby Surround intro? :)

Any feedback and advice would be a great help, thanks.

It's a film source; it should not be deinterlaced.

What you should do, however, is carry out IVTC to restore 23.976 progressive fps.

As per your suggestion I have made an attempt to carry out an IVTC on a 27 minute segment and the expanded from just under 8 GB to nearly 50 GB! Is this correct or have I made an error somewhere?

Here's my VirtualDub settings for the IVTC.

I'm honestly not one of the expert on laserdiscs but good luck on this. The 1990 ROTJ used a different master from the GOUT. Because I believe msycamore has done the Technidisc edition of ANH and ESB will come after his THX preservation, it's nice to know someone will be doing a preservation like this to complete the smear-free trilogy.

Good luck on this.

Thanks. :)

ROTJ LD Preservation Project (* unfinished project? *)

This is my first preservation/restoration project and the source material is the US ROTJ 1990 Laserdisc release. At this stage, I don’t know if the end result will be a DVD, MP4 etc - this is where I’ll probably need some guidance.

Main project equipment:

P4 3.6Ghz PC with 2GB RAM and 360GB HDD with a WinFast VC100 XP capture card, running a heavily optimised XP SP3 installation.

1Ghz G4 Mac with 1.2GB RAM and 250GB HDD with an M-Audio 2496 card and M-Audio CO2 converter.

Pioneer CLD-925 and LD-V4400 Laserdisc players.

This is what I have been doing so far. I have used iuVCR on my PC to produce NTSC analogue captures in 720x480 with the UT codec from the LD-V4400. The entire film has been captured onto the computer and de-noised using the Neat Video plug-in for VirtualDub.

I am using the Mac to extract the PCM audio from the D925’s optical out and and then at a later stage I’ll sync everything together.

There’s still a lot of work to do and I’m still finding my feet to a great extent. I will keep this thread updated as the project progresses. If anyone has any questions, suggestions or questions in general - by all means, fire away.

Check out the screenshots if you’re curious at all.

Unless I had an enlightened girlfriend who appreciated the value of my hobbies, my lifestyle would probably cause so many conflicts. :)

The Dark Side Wins: Lucasfilm Shuts Down Star Wars Movie Marathon

Lucas shuts down 'Star Wars' movie marathon
July 8, 2011, 12:43 PM EST

WENN

A special fan screening of all the "Star Wars" films which was to be held in New York was canceled after creator George Lucas threatened legal action over the event.

A group of sci-fi devotees had organized a 13-hour "Star Wars" movie marathon for 200 fans in a bar in Brooklyn last Sunday, but the screening was called off after organizers received a cease-and-desist letter from Lucas' lawyers. The letter cited copyright infringements and added that there was a moratorium on public "Star Wars" screenings.

Organizer Mike DeVito tells the New York Post, "I've seen the Star Wars movies about 150 times but never in one long run together, and I thought it would be great to put something like this together for like-minded people. ... What bothers me most is that they waited until the last minute to notify us, so we couldn't get a chance to try working something out. ... It wasn't as if we were making money off it."

DeVito added that Lucas "has crossed over" and now gives Darth Vader "a run for his money." Lucasfilm did not reply to the New York Post's requests for comment.

In light of the recent Blu-Ray announcements, I will continue to watch my SW LD's for a long time to come. I've got the 89/90/92 releases, the 97SE set and even the TPM JPN release too. Till I get everything transferred, the 12" silver discs are my preferred route for enjoying the films in the versions I saw in the cinema and on TV.

Besides, I have a stack of OOP Criterion discs and other stuff that seems unlikely to ever see the light of day on newer formats.

I am no expert but if I had to guess I would say it looks like you've only captured either the top or bottom field for each frame, that's why the images are half the proper height (240 instead of 480) it would also explain the jaggies/aliasing/tearing you are seeing. Or you have somehow captured at double the normal frame rate causing each field to become its own frame... :S Unfortunately I have no experience capturing using VDub or the capture card you have so I don't have any advice on how to fix this. :(

Hopefully someone else will be able to steer you in the right direction! ;)

Hi Lee,

Thanks for your response! It gave me enough of a lead to receive help elsewhere. :)

After a great deal of troubleshooting and trial and error, I succeeded in isolating the source of my difficulties. VirtualDub, for some unknown reason cannot interface properly with my PC's hardware. Instead, I switched over to using iuVCR and within minutes I was able to produce a good capture!

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/5950/newscreencap.th.png[/IMG]

http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/199/newscreencap2.th.png[/IMG]

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3438/newscreencap5.th.png[/IMG]

If anyone else has problems with VirtualDub, it might be worth giving iuVCR a go. Now I can proceed with my project! :)

I do understand the point of the video.

Yes, I would agree that Luke is the main hero of the OT, but honestly does not do much in ROTJ; however, out of curiosity, would you like ROTJ better if it had an alteration of that magnitude by Lucas? Vader loses redemption but the main hero saves the day.

Something like this?

I hope that someone includes this parody as an extra on a future preservation, it could certainly cause a backlash if circulated widely enough.

Lucas has gone quite mad, he's just as much of a megalomaniac as Palpatine. I could just imagine him, preparing the new revisions and quoting Vader, "there'll be no-one to stop us this time!" Which isn't too far from the reality, there really is no-one to challenge his misguided decisions.

When I watched the South Park episode, Free Hat, I laughed at the idea of ROTJ with the entire cast replaced by Ewoks. Now, it seems a distinct possibility. The fanboys will argue that seeing as he owns the copyrights, Lucas is entitled to make any alterations he sees fit. That's correct but it doesn't mean I have to watch or pay for them.

Some Noob Analogue Capturing Questions
Time

I could really do with some advice here please because I'm on the right track but going wrong at some crucial stage. Following the capture guide on Doom9 and the suggestions on here, I've set up my PC to capture from Laserdisc.

When I playback and review the end result, it is always a small narrow image of video. Here are some screencaps to demonstrate the problem.

I have to switch to the 4:3 option in VLC or Media Player Classic in order to maximise the frame so that it enlarges and stretches across the screen properly. Like in the screencap below.

Also, the captured video suffers from frame tearing, especially during rapid action sequences. I don't experience this when watching other video files so I know its not a problem related to V-Sync issues in my media players. I have searched through OT.com and Google for similar instances but couldn't find anything.

Can anyone offer any pointers or tips for me to correct these issues please?

Here are the specs of the PC I am using for the video capturing...

P4 3.06hz, 2GB RAM and 320GB HDD space running Win XP SP3 (fully updated and tweaked) with all anti-virus and firewall services deactivated.

WinFast VC100 XP PCI card with VirtualDub 1.9.10 handling the capturing.

Need some advice on which LD player to choose from my shortlist.

Time to resurrect this thread from the dead. Apologies for such a massive delay in updating this, my studies, ill health and other issues have taken up my time. Ok, I'm already into producing a project - I'll create a separate thread to discuss that.

Here's a link to some screen caps of the 1990 ROTJ LD captured via S-Video from the Pioneer CLD-D925. I also made an attempt to capture the RCA composite output but for some reason the quality was so poor it was unusable.

After I've had some sleep I'll post some caps of the same LD on the Pioneer LD- V4400.

Some other good examples with help from the Mailbag Committee: Kirstie Alley; Susan Sarandon; Phyllis George; Belinda Carlisle; Carrie Fisher; Charlene Tilton; Mary Tyler Moore; Tyra Banks; Marianne Faithfull; Melanie Griffith; Delta Burke; Deborah Norville; Teri Garr; Cher; Brenda Vaccaro; Angie Dickinson; Brigitte Nielsen; Valerie Bertinelli; Lindsay Lohan (the youngest example ever); Ann Wilson; Elizabeth Taylor; Ann-Margret; Debbie Harry; Whitney Houston; and, of course, Jim Lampley.

LOL.

lol... Good roll call, come to think of it. Tyra Banks is still attractive though and Cher continues to look reasonably good but of course that's down to the same kind of artificial means Sidious used to save Vader's life after Mustafar :D

Really?  I don't think Mark Hamill looks half bad.  Carrie Fisher isn't too bad either.  She'd probably still be stunning if she dropped a little bit of weight.  I wouldn't say they've aged too bad.

Let's add some recent photographs of the pair to this discussion :)

Fisher in 2009 and... Fisher in 2009 pt2 and pt3

Hamill in 2008  and again in 2008 with Samuel L Jackson another one with Sam again, in 2008 and again in 2008 Hamill in 2009 and pt2

You might want to look for Adywan's restoration of the theatrical cut, probably about the best you can get. http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/The-Phantom-Menace-Theatrical-Version-NTSC-DVD-ADYWAN-NOW-AVAILABLE/topic/10615/

Thanks for that, I've managed to find a torrent link and I'll see if it's still active :)

Regarding ROTJ, from what I've seen on my W/S THX 1995 PAL VHS release, during the Death Star battle, just before Han deceives the Imperial forces into opening the rear base doors, Lando says: "Now. C'mon Han old buddy, don't let me down".

According on imdb and here virtually all the other pre-SE home versions have the same line. However, the JPN and 1990 U.S LD contain the full scene (present in all versions from 97' onwards) of Lando adjusting a few controls and commenting: "We're sure in the middle of it now...", after which he then says "C'mon Han old buddy, don't let me down". I don't have access to the 1993 DC or Faces sets to check them (perhaps others who do, can?), but if I'm correct, the JPN and 1990 U.S releases would be the most complete OOT version of ROTJ available.

Need some advice on which LD player to choose from my shortlist.

That's a good question Womble, over the weekend I'll sit down and make a comparison by watching the same NTSC discs on both. Really I need to hurry up and rebuild my "A/V workstation" PC, then I could take some screengrabs and post them. In the meantime, slight differences include the D925 having a better laser (transport?) and perhaps error correction. This might be because the technology was made more recently.

I played a disc that has a big crack near the centre on both machines, the 4400 attempted and gave up whilst the D925 was able to cope, albeit with a distorted image. I only did this for a few seconds for fear of damaging both players. The 4400 appears during some scenes to have more ghosting, but again I'll sort out some grabs for you to check out soon.

Transfers? Well, they'd have to include Star Wars, wouldn't they? :)

The U.S CBS/Fox 1989/1990 LD's, I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this but the 1990 ROTJ (which of course is a re-package of the 1986 JPN release) has the full dialogue of Lando in the Falcon which is missing from all the other pre SE releases.

The Phantom Menace JPN LD (tried to locate the theatrical cut at various places online and the best I ever found was a VHS rip with static on the audio and elements of "Macrovision resistance").

PAL SW OT 1997 SE LD box set, which will include all the extras (obviously I'll be using the D925 for this job and will try to get the best results I can).

Criterion editions of Menace II Society and Dead Presidents. The new director's cut of Menace on DVD & Blu-Ray doesn't have even half the extras present on the Criterion LD and the commentaries are different too.

Pioneer WS SE version of Basic Instinct - according to this review the LD's director's commentary and extras are superior to those on the unrated DVD.

There's a few others I'm looking into but I think this lot is more than enough for me to be getting on with for the meantime :)
