The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)

I used the 1080p master file that i used for the SE AVCHD and downscaled this to 480p.

Now unfortunately doing a HD version just won't work. Downscaling the 1080p colour corrected master to 720p still retains most of the detail, but upscaling the GOUT to 720p just really brings out just how bad the quality is when spliced in with 720p video. It just doesn't blend in at all. So the DVD version is all there will be, i'm afraid

Correct me if I'm wrong but IMHO as most people now have HDTVs, that means they will be watching this upscaled to HD anyway, only the quality of the upscale will be worse than if it was done in a computer. But I see your point, the LQ elements probably will stand out less, if the quality of the rest is also lower.

Well, thank you again for doing this, and thank you for trying to fulfil my request and I completely understand that you won't release something, if you're not satisfied with the results.

Oh, well, I'll have to do it myself, then :-) Especially in ESB, there are long sequences where nothing was changed exept for colour (like most of Hoth before the battle, the Yoda scenes, the carbon freezing chamber, the light sabre fight) and I'd feel kind of robbed watching them in SD knowing I could be watching the exact same sequence in higher res. I can just put the whole sequences that were changed in from the DVD and there should be a very few jumps from HD to SD.

I hope you see my point, I don't mind watching something that is better content-wise in lower quality (before the AVCHDs I mostly watched the GOUT) but I do mind watching something in LQ when I know I could be watching the exact same thing in HQ.

Well, yes a large part of this was taken from an HD source (the master files for Adywan's AVCHD) and also a DVD player with upscaling function can hardly have the same hardware as a decent computer and the player has to upscale in miliseconds, computer will take much much longer (time depending on CPU) to do the upscaling even though it has more powerfull hardware, so using a decent software you're bound to have better results upscaling on a computer, than directly from a player.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

OK, it seems that my last post ended up last on the previous page and got therefore kinda lost. I'll repost it, I hope this won't be taken as spamming, if so, I apologise:

"And what about the making of documentary? For TESB:R there will be life shooting, model shooting, a lot of visually impresive SG work, I think it would make for an intresting fan documentary. It wouldn't have to be made by Adywan, who will probably want a bit of a break, after finishing his masterpiece, but he could entrust the footage to some of the documentary experts here. A complete supplementary disc would be just awesome."

I've heard a radio interview with Ady about ANH:R and it was really interesting and I think a commentary track would be great. It could be just a low bitrate stream so it wouldn't draw on the video quality or could be available separately to be muxed in at will. The text commentary isn't so great IMHO, it was what kinda bothered me about the deleted magic docs, I think it would have had a lot more of a documentary feel, had the written lines been read aloud.

OK, no matter what I've tried, TehParadox just won't let me register. I must have registered there before (probably a long time ago as I don't remeber it), because it said my e-mail was already being used, so I tried their "forgot your password" thing but it's been several hours and I didn't get the e-mail. So I just tried registering again with another e-mail and it worked but whenever I log in it says:

you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

 1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
 2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
 3. The page you are trying to access does not exist.

And it says this even if I open pages like Forum, Donate or Forum Rules

I'm getting desperate. Could someone tell me what to do? Or better yet, just PM me the links? That would be so great...

Adywan, you are a crazy man! The prospects of seeing an anamorphic version of ESB Theatrical are pretty enticing. Unfortunately, newsgroups and torrents aren't options for me. Can anyone point me to other options? Rapidshare? Megaupload? PIF? PM me. Thanx. And Thanx Ady.

Same here :-(

Don't believe everything you have heard about them completely re-compositing the Hoth battle. That is rubbish. I proved this when i was starting the Hoth battle for ESB:R. Even in the SE documentaries when they mention they recomposited the cockpits to remove the transparency was just lies. All they did was lower the black level as the cockpits are all still transparent. There are one or two very minor differences in the battle and that's it

I did mention in the first post that this would not be a 100% authentic recreation as this is not what i was aiming for.

And you won't watch ANH:R just because it's in SD? So you only watch stuff that's in HD then? Limiting yourself a bit there.

No, no, no, not won't watch, I did watch it and I loved some aspects of it, what I'm saying is that when I want to watch STAR WARS and I often do, ANH:R is not the version I go for and there are other reasons for this than it's not being HD; I like the originals and even though you've done an awesome job on ANH:R it is just very much not the original. And I really like HD so when I want to watch STAR WARS it's either the GOUT or your brilliant AVCHD as it is HD and also has the worst SE flaws removed so it's as close to the original an HD version is gonna get (or has got so far). Thanks a million for that. If this was HD it would definitely become my prefered version of TESB but if not I'll just stick to the AVCHD or perhaps use this one for a partial despecialisation of the AVCHD just for my viewing (stuff like the orig. Wampa scene or that added window with elevator with f*cked up continuity...)

Now to the SE vs. OT Hoth battle. I did a lot of comparisons back when I got my 1st OOT VHS and was disapointed that all those fx scenes I admired on my SE VHS frame by frame as a kid, thinking how awesome the fx were for the time they were done in, were probably digitally tweaked:

The mate lines are gone in SE, motion blur is added, the speeder in the background is replaced.

The same here, plus here the laser blast is apparently enhanced.

What about fx shots? Like in the battle of Hoth, which was comletely recomposited for the SE and looks better but a lot less old school and I love that old school effects look, is this preserved here?

And also, is there any chance we'd be getting this in HD? I know the quality changes would be more apparent but I'd still prefer to watch it in HD that would switch to SD quality sometimes then to watch SD the whole time. That's one of the reasons I don't watch ANH:R, because it's not HD.

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

Adywan, could you please post the english subtitles you used for your AVCHDs somewhere in a text format so they could be translated to other languages? I wanted to show STAR WARS to my friend and I would have loved to use your AVCHDs but he doesn't speak English so I was stuck with the awful 2004 DVD (GOUT didn't come out here at all) or dubbed 4:3 VHS. And an advice on how to put the subs into the AVCHD would also be apreciated, thanks a lot.
