Right on both counts. Should be ready this evening, or possibly tomorrow.
Right on both counts. Should be ready this evening, or possibly tomorrow.
All right, encoding the next workprint now. I did a pass with skenera’s LUTs. I know there’s some things I missed and I will certainly do a more detailed pass for the final version, picking out shots that need a different combination.
For Exegol, I set the regular LUT at 50%, and the Exegol-gray LUT at 50% to sort of split the difference.
Just personal preference. The smoke was a very subtle background detail, and the eyes seemed too weird. The only other time someone has those eyes briefly us Anakin.
And as it turns out, my TROS edit doesn’t go quite as far as the original to hit home that Snoke is a literal conduit for Palpatine.
Real answer, though: just personal preference.
No need to apologize. But yeah, I agree with the idea in principle but it’ll depend on whether it becomes possible.
Nice work, kewlfish! You and Movies Remastered seem well equipped to see this through.
And about Ben’s death, if someone would be able and wish to do the two or three effects shots, I’m sure I or someone can get audio to match. That’s a big if, but I’ll leave it open and we’ll just see.

Luke’s green lightsaber uses the crystal from Qui-Gon’s hilt, since he found it among Kenobi’s belongings.
That’s a little too out there for me.
I love the insight you guys are pouring into the crackly saber, especially tying it into her sense of unworthiness.
I do still think it’d be cleaner and less iffy to maintain the effect until the end.
Dub D-O with Trump.
Sad!
I feel Tattooine has been done to death in the ever shrinking SW galaxy. It’s refreshing with a new location.
Just my opinion of course
+1
Not that I’d heard about.
I would’ve preferred to just stay on GOUT-sync forever. Across the three films it’s a total of like 4 frames different. But I agree that if they can more or less agree going forward then that’s fine. I’d suggest mirroring the D+## projects since they’re already out there and seem to have all the theatrical frames.
Depends how fortunate I am. I’m exporting the raw output now, which I’ll import into FCPX in order to apply LUTs. I may not get as granular with that as the final release, just applying the relevant ones to their portions of the movie broadly. For the final release I’ll want to sit down and go over things more carefully.
So possibly within a few days, but I never know. I just work on this, outside of forum stuff, whenever I have cracks of time.
I don’t see anything wrong with that at all.
If there’s a good way to either stay with Rey longer after Ben fades, or some other shot or something to just stew a moment before a happy lalala scene, I’m for it.
I had a fried over for a bit yesterday who is a big SW fan and showed a few clips from the workprint. Fun to see reactions IRL, especially to jonh’s ghost stuff. I told him that even though that clip has made rounds on the internet and is something I had no hand in making, I feel proud knowing it was made originally for this project. Lol
Neato. I’ll do audio when I can. 😃
Yes, I can’t see anything wrong with it at all on my screen, at least not without going frame by frame or anything. The first pass seemed like the pattern on the blade was sort of… uniform, but it looks like you’ve fixed that so I have no complaints.
It seems like Kylo’s saber core was a little thinner but had the crackle effect that makes it look thicker. This saber obviously can’t really be made thinner, so you use a little less of a crackle effect. At least it seems that way.
I think that’ll be more than adequate for purposes of cover artwork. Again, very nicely done.
And, Noah. I like the idea but I’d hate to lose the original score for that scene and moment. I think it’ll be another one on the reject pile. But I’m glad you mocked it up and we had another idea to consider.
I like that most recent one better!
I’m not bothered by canon fodder about how lightsabers work. In TLJ it was broken in half, and in this movie Rey has reforged it but feels conflicted about her inner darkness. Makes perfect sense to me that the saber should crackle in a similar fashion as Kylo’s. It’s sort of like Luke wearing black in ROTJ: it makes us question whether she may actually go dark.
Can you make two versions available, one with and without the crackle effect for those of us who aren’t a fan of it.
I can’t. I’m already going to do a Rey Nobody cut at some point, but the final product should be plenty high quality enough to be worked from if anyone wishes to tweak or do anything else to.
Hey, Hal? How would you feel if I tried to put together a possible extension or new re-cut of Ben’s death for more grieving over his loss?
Well, I’d welcome it, of course. Have at it!
I know you already are gonna put Kylo in as a force ghost on Tatooine, but have you considered adding Anakin too? Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlnRy7g--tU
We have considered it, but I think that’d be way too distracting and unnecessary. It feels right to have just Luke, Leia, and Ben.
Also, I do agree the saturation could stand to be dialed down on the cover.
Thanks a lot, Movies Remastered, I like that cover a great deal. Once the edit is locked we should have everything needed in order to complete full covers for Bluray and DVD.
And I agree that it’d be better for the saber to remain crackly for the whole movie. So as long as kewlfish is going to actually do the effect for the entire movie I’ll be glad to utilize it. I think you’ve got skenera’s purple saber footage already but let me know if you need jonh’s or any other footage to work with.
Would you mind posting your updated version of that sequence when you can? Might help to perfect it there before moving on.
I leave that to kewlfish. If he wants to do the effect all the way through using the sources I’m using, I’m all for the effect carrying through to the end. Whenever I can, I’ll handle the audio side of things, probably after doing a more substantial workprint without it to tide people over longterm.
Can I make a suggestion,
When you do the Ben Solo scenes, can you make sure you use Skenera’s purple lightsaber scenes as base footage?Edit:
These are the clips I am referring to:
Unless, of course, kewlfish prefers to have the effect cease when it is handed to Ben through the Force. If not, I’d also need the effect applied to jonh’s ghost footage when the saber is used.
Well, if the crackling stops when it’s passed to Ben it’d mean less work! And it could be one of those things one may not notice on first viewing. Works for me.
And thanks, axios, for your take. Glad you liked it! We’ve hashed those ideas out. I added some light duel of the fates music from Maul’s scene in Solo, which was Cinefy’s idea. It’s not overpowering, scratches an itch, and feels like a good compromise.
I also don’t want to use tracked score for that Palpatine music. Maybe I’ve lived inside the prequels too much, but that music in that moment is readily identifiable as the order 66 montage and I find it very distracting.
