To be fair, she picked it up much more quickly than anyone else in the galaxy, including the literal Chosen One.

There is actually an explanation in TLJ for this, the whole ‘darkness rises and light to meet it’. . . . The only thing worse than that would be to actually provide such an explanation, which would alienate those who have accepted the prior explanation as well as coming so late in the story that everyone else has already made up their minds.

In short, pulling that thread in the eleventh hour will just make a mess.

Not necessarily. Just make Rey already a Jedi trainee when TFA opens.

  • Han and Luke call out “Ben” as he is about to strike Rey, I added this to make it more of a collective effort from the big 3 to reach their kid.
  • Added in Leia looking at Han’s medal intercut with Kylo getting stabbed and her death.
  • rearranged the healing scene with Rey first expressing that she wanted to take his hand, than using her hand to heal him (I think it helps in building up to the kiss later on), she then runs off as Kylo looks in aw…

Nice technical work there, but I’ll never buy the “Reylo” idea. It severely diminishes one’s character to be in love with a mass murderer – yet in other respects Rey’s character is so upstanding. Thus it’s a massive “Huh???” In fact it’s even worse than the utter lack of chemistry between Padme and Anakin in the PT.

Random thought, I wonder if we could frame Snoke as Palpatine’s apprentice, . . .

Imagine if Abrams had simply revealed that Snoke was actually Darth Plagueis, and had once again cheated death? Would that not have made for a better story??

Hmm, that was just me speculating, but now I’m wondering: could the name “Palpatine” be removed from TROS, perhaps adding a flashback of “the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise”? This could have huge ramifications for the entire saga - implying that Palatine in the prequels may actually have been Plagueis himself.

This could actually work in a reedit that eliminates the “Rey Palatine” angle.

I am removing force healing from my edit. So, Kylo dies on the death star after being stabbed by Rey. In other words, Ben is never redeemed. As a result, Rey cannot be healed by Ben, so she tragically dies after defeating the emperor.

Also, I am removing the entire McGuffin chase. Meaning Rey goes straight from Leia to the death star to find the wayfinder. Its an imperfect solution, but its workable, and it removes the worst parts of the movie IMO. It does a great deal to fast track Rey Nobody because it removes Ochi and the flashbacks about her parents.

I like some of this. I also plan to remove the scavenger hunt. How would you go about connecting the dots without the in-between hunt?

As to no Ben at Exegol, and Rey dying at Exegol, how do you think you might manage that without the climactic battle looking like something is missing?

Any ideas on how to keep Ben alive?
“as I once fell, so will the last Skywalker” is depressingly anticlimactic considering the title of the film.

I’m toying with this, but am drawn to the poetic justice of Ben actually accomplishing what he said he would do: “finish what you [Vader] started.” It would be an ironic twist that he sort of both mirrors and completes his grandfather’s self-sacrifice.

I personally think Rey Palpatine needs to go. I couldn’t care less what the canon says.

Amen!

[Option] 2. Rey accidentally killed her parents, causing a conflict over her inner darkness. . . .

Option 2 is the most difficult, although the payoff might be worth the extra VFX work.

I don’t think it’ll prove that difficult (depending on how much one wants to elaborate on it with flashbacks or visions). The initial “killing” would be a short clip involving splicing together Rey’s flashback of her parents leaving (TFA) and her hand in the air shooting lightning (TROS).

I also intend to pad the backstory with parts of this excellent 9-min. fan film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zRGaVi59bs

I’ll also insert flashbacks and a Dark Rey vision into her interrogation.

It also occurs to me that possibly Dark Rey could be combined with Force-lightning attacking Resistance ships in TROS, so that she fears destroying her own friends. “Always in motion, is the future,” said Yoda – so the Force-lightning attack would be an actual glimpse of the future, only she thinks she’s the attacker, rather than Palpatine.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I think that since it’s already established in canon that Rey is a Palpatine, we should just keep that, improve it but not deny it, even if we don’t like that narrative decision. Changing something like that it’s too big.

To each then own, but personally when I do a reedit, it’s all about head canon. For instance, there’s no “Chosen One” in my prequel reedit, nor any “will of the Force.” No midichlorians, either.

And technically, it’ll be a cinch to remove “Rey Palpatine.” I love the idea others have had to make it so that she accidentally killed her own parents. I’m gonna work a “memory” of that into Kylo’s interrogation of her.

There could have been more of a personal connection with the climax if Kylo did the “Sith Sacrifice/Power Transfer” and it was a battle between Kylo(Sith Avatar) and Rey. That would have done it.

What if Kylo’s voice could be dubbed over Palpatine’s but saying the same lines?

In this scenario, when Palp draws energy from Ben and Rey, only Rey survives, and she hears Palp talking with Ben’s voice.

I always thought it would be interesting if we found out that she killed her parents the same way she “killed” chewie, maybe she was born with the darkside and her parents hated her for it, they decide to sell her to unkarr and leave the planet but in her rage she force electrocutes the ship, she becomes so traumatised that she locks those memories away, in TROS we see her true nature unravel as the film progresses until we reach the climax where she must make the ultimate choice.

In my own reedit this could actually be done, since I’m not going to be including the whole scavenger hunt. It would be possible to combine a shot of young, abandoned Rey reaching out her hand to the sky, with the TROS shot of Force-lightning exploding the transport.

I think I’ll make this a flashback during Rey’s interrogation. New dialogue could also be created for Kylo in which he says as much. Something as succinct as “You killed them.”

As I’ve said before, from a purely logistical stance it’s laughable that in a twenty mile radius of Jakku desert we have the Millennium Falcon, the map to Luke, and the granddaughter of Palpatine/powerful Force sensitive whose parents were personally killed by Kylo Ren, with all of these things finding their way to the planet entirely coincidentally.

Agreed. In my sequel mashup these issues won’t exist. When the movie begins, Rey will be immediately established as a “nobody” orphan taken in and trained by Luke (and Mara Jade?). She was captured when Ben and his “Knights” torched the Jedi academy and killed a bunch of Luke’s students.

So as the reedit opens, Rey is already at Starkiller Base. I’ll extend the time frame of her interrogation so that, as Kylo works on her, we cut away to her memories of being orphaned and having been trained.

According to this page from the novisation The Emperor in TROS was (eyeroll) a clone.

I would’ve preferred no Palpatine at all – but I quite enjoyed the Dark Empire graphic novels.

From Wikipedia:

Following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, several critics interpreted the circumstances of Palpatine’s return as amounting to a tribute to Dark Empire. The film’s novelization reveals that Palpatine returned using a clone body, much like his return in the comic.

The first sequence would pan down like ANH to a lush green world, antithetical to Tatooine. The Falcon flies overhead. We cut to the surface and see Chewbacca looking at a hut in the trees as we hear Wookiee roars in the distance. This is Kashyyyk, and Chewie has finally come home.

This vid might help your cause: “KASHYYYK - A Star Wars Battlefront 2 Cinematic” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea-VKMqhdVE (1 min. 25 sec). You could also use footage from Avatar. Include a shot or two of the Falcon, then maybe the echoing sound of Chewie’s roar emanating from the jungle - possibly with some translation added???

Here are a couple great clips of the Falcon approaching what could be Kashyyyk:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9d96msKTG8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxlugVKl5i8 (Would need some enhancement/cleaning up)

Maybe this one, just before the ship crashes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igQQm4-myxA
It could be slowed down to indicate a controlled landing.

Or you could just use a scene from the Christmas Special. <LOL>

To me, the main theme of the whole ST is Balance. . . . [T]he lone justification for them (at least in my grown-up-with-the-prequels-eyes) might be that the “balance” of the force (between light and dark, good and evil, etc.) was not restored when Luke (a jedi) “killed” Palpatine (a sith), because that way the balance would be outweighed by the jedi again.

Respectfully, I never bought Lucas’s notion of “balance.” Like, what – there should be a “balance” between good and evil??? Why wouldn’t we want to see as much good as possible in the universe???

Lucas’s overriding achievement in this franchise was the Great Original Idea, best captured in A New Hope, and echoed to a lesser extent in TESB and ROTJ. The Force was left very vague, and thus open to a variety of interpretations.

Though TESB is a fantastic instalment as far as storytelling and characterization go, I felt Lucas went overboard by having Yoda wax religious about the mystical nature of the Force. At that point the concept shifted from open-to-interpretation – to basically a repackaging of pantheism.

It was (to me) downhill from there. The notions of “balance” and “the will of the Force” (only a person can have a will) crept into the prequels (especially TPM) and were echoed in the sequels.

Cumulatively, Lucas’s Force philosophy is an incoherent mess, and I’ve studiously avoided all such dialogue in my reedits. I’ve tried to preserve the simple idea conveyed originally by Obi-Wan: “The Force is an energy field created by all living things. . . .”

Just a point of view. ☺

Sparky, RogueLeader, I really like the idea you’re throwing around here. TROS really does little other than try to justify itself, whereas TLJ does feel far more conclusive. I agree that the only real ‘meat’ of TROS which also concludes a key part of the story is Rey vs Kylo around the old Death Star wreckage, and Kylo’s Han dream.

Hmm . . . I wonder if the huge Star Destroyer fleet could be portrayed as part of the First Order, and the battle against it interspersed with the Kylo-Rey duel on the D.S. wreckage?

If so, the climax of the saga could be Ben’s return to the light. No mention of Palpatine.

Had an image of a pretty cool visual in my head for an alternate moment for the ending scene.

I have mentioned before that instead of having Rey bury the old lightsabers, we could see her build her new one rather than pull it out of nowhere. . . . So imagine we get this sequence of saber parts floating around and coming together.

You should check this out: Hoshino - Star Wars Fan Film (7 min.), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7-n36MBs1A&t=206s

Excellent short film.  There are shots at least in the ballpark of what you’re after.  I really like your idea and will likely do the following: alternate lightsaber construction shots from Hoshino with clips of Rey on Tatooine, culminating with the ignition of her yellow saber.

Also, it’s just occurred to me that Rey igniting her saber would be a good final shot for the movie itself – or just before cutting away to “Broom Boy” as the final shot.

. . . . It’s so funny to me because I really felt the romantic vibes in TLJ. . . . But I definitely think if you want to keep the kiss, their feelings for each other need to be set up more.

Never understood why a decent person, as Rey obviously is, would find herself attracted to a mass murderer. That sort of “romantic” subplot makes zero sense to me.

Nonetheless, I did like a lot of the Rey-Ben dynamic in this trilogy. My 3-in-1 mashup will focus on that, but eliminate any hint of romance.

. . . maybe Ben isn’t trying to use Vader’s helmet to somehow reconnect with Rey, but instead, he is trying to confirm what Palpatine told him, and the flood of painful memories and revelations inadvertently reconnects him with Rey, since those feelings are something they both shared. So not only could it be a more sympathetic angle for Ben to see how he was manipulated, but it could also give more clues as to how Palpatine survived.

Building on this, it occurs to me to imply throughout TFA and TLJ - and maybe a little in TROS - that Kylo’s trying to use the helmet to contact Vader’s spirit. Possibly some Vader lines from prior films but also other media, such as the Battlefront games, could be dubbed in to make Kylo think that contact has been made - but it turns out later that it was Palp manipulating him.

Moderator Edit:-

From the opening post of this thread…

A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners.

There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ etc is not.

In addition, if a moderator requests you to stop with the topic of conversation then please do so - and do not continue to post about the subject.
