FanFiltration’s/... 'Star Wars: Making Magic Preservation' (Released)
Time
F.Y.I.

There are some bonus trailers and a long "Making of" extra routed from the main menu that had not been included on the original CD-ROM. They are taken from the out-of-print SE laserdisc set. It's kind of an extra, as it is S.E. related and the CD-ROM was kind of short on it's own.

Please let me know what you guys think.

Enjoy!

FanFiltration Presents: Star Wars: Making Magic (THE DVD)

This DVD is a Behind-the-Scenes look at the making of the Star Wars
Trilogy Special Edition. Produced by FanFiltration as a means to back up
and also preserve this now “Out-of-Print” Star Wars related CD-ROM title from 1997. This
DVD has video clips of a lot of the re-done scenes, storyboards for the
special edition, and interviews with the cast and crew of the Special
Editions including George Lucas. As far as I know, this title was only
included with “The LucasArts Archives Volume 2” CD-ROM game box set.
With the use of new menu routing, you can pretty much navigate the
entire program by just using the play button on your DVD players remote.

Video Capture: VGA to S-Video converter
Software: Adobe Premiere / After Effects / Photoshop / Encore
Video Encoder: Adobe (various bit rates)
Audio: TMPGEnc AC-3 (2.0 192 kbits/sec)
Menus: Adobe Encore & Photoshop
Notes: New intro made from scan of the original CD-ROM combined with a
screen shot from the movie. Music from the original Soundtrack
recordings used to replace the original CD-ROM’s music for menus.

A huge “THANK YOU” to Rikter who has done so much to get this releases out!

Rikter has made a great DVD cover for this title, and it can be downloaded by folowing the links

Again, “THANK YOU” Rikter!

What's so significant about the broadcast and Denver workprint versions? Do they contain scenes not seen elsewhere?

From the IMDB:

The infamous workprint briefly resurfaced, by accident, for a one-week engagement (1/15 - 1/21) at the Seattle, WA Landmark Egyptian Theater in 1999. However, this print was the one-of-a-kind 70mm blow-up, directly from Warner Bros.' vault!

There are some additional differences (that have not been reported) between this version and the other "regular" versions:
Sound was mixed in 6-track Dolby Stereo, and contained numerous differences in sound effects, music, and dialogue as compared to the standard 35mm 5-track mixes.

Opening shots did not include close-up and subsequent pull-aways from Holden's eye as he looks out the window, it simply cut closer and closer to the Tyrell Corp. building until the interior could be seen. All the while, air-traffic control headings can be heard being issued during the sequence (it was originally edited to suggest a view from a spinner as it flies toward the Tyrell Corp.).

After Leon fires on Holden and Holden crahes through the wall, hitting the table, the shot stays on Holden as fan blades brush his hair and his back smokes from the gunfire.

Deckard's meal at "THE WHITE DRAGON" can be seen being laid on the bar in front of him, rather than merely being heard.
No narration during the scene where Deckard awaits a seat at "THE WHITE DRAGON", but the blimp's advertisement is un-altered in the background (unlike in the "Director's Cut", where it WAS altered to cover the narration over).

When Deckard and Gaff inspect Leon's address and the attendant opens his room for them, he says, "Kowalski", indicating the current tenant. Kowalski is Leon's "last name".

Roy does not ask Chew, "Now...where would we find this J. F. Sebastian?"; the scene merely cuts to Deckard driving home.
When Deckard plays the piano in a depressed stupor: a) there is no unicorn vision, b) there is no background music, and c) we hear the one or two notes Harrison Ford actually played on the set.

Deckard's search for Abduul Hasaan lasts longer: we see more of Animoid Row and the back streets of the sector.

After Zhora attacks Deckard and flees, we see Deckard loosen his tie from his throat...as if he was nearly beheaded!

"If I Didn't Care", by the Ink Spots, was originally heard in the background when Deckard purchases a bottle of Tsing Tao.

In Deckard's apartment, there originally was no "Love Theme" as we all know and love; the initial music track merely continues on longer. Also, Rachel plays a different selection on the piano when testing herself; it actually was the sheet music we see displayed!

When Roy kills Tyrell, the footage of Tyrell dying was more in tone with the International Version (yet still somewhat tamer) and Roy then turns to Sebastian saying, "I'm sorry, Sebastian. Come. COME", as he stalks J.F.

Bryant's info to Deckard over the CB about Tyrell's and Sebastian's deaths are heard as we see Deckard driving through the tunnel.

When Deckard is parked in his sedan on the street, he is merely preparing to call J.F.'s apartment before the police spinner interrogates him.

We actually see Roy break Deckard's fingers, in close up, with a prop-hand.

More shots of Deckard as he hangs on to the nieghboring building for dear life, after "jumping the gorge".

Different, farther-away shots of Roy as Deckard watches him die.

Alternate narration was placed here (the only narration in this version), which consisted of this: "I watched him die all night. It was a long, slow thing and he fought it all the way. He never whimpered and he never quit. He took all the time he had as though he loved life very much. Every second of it...even the pain. Then, he was dead."

No shots of the "rolling TV monitors" in Deckard's apartment as he searches for Rachel. The shot merely continues, close up on Deckard, from the opening shot of the sequence, until he reaches down to pull the covers from over Rachel.

No end credits, merely exit music: the same cue heard as Gaff takes Deckard to see Bryant at the opening.

Info Wanted: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TELEMOVIES (Interest poll)
Time

After the Original Battlestar Galactica’s run was over on television, Universal cut the first season episodes into twelve “telemovies”, to be sold to television stations for syndication.

Sometimes episodes were pieced together with the inclusion of over-dubbed dialog, and bridging sequences (from stock footage).

“Experiment in Terra” is the only one of these telemovies which actually features new footage, as well as footage that is not on the official DVD set.

“EXPERIMENT IN TERRA”
This telemovie begins with Earth astronauts finding a logbook drifting in space. We are then given a brief history of the colonies and the Galactica’s journey across the stars with voiceovers by Lorne Greene and Patrick Macnee. Then the “Experiment In Terra” episode begins.

Now I have an old VHS of this telemovie from when it was shown on San Francisco T.V. years ago, and would like to know if this is something that warrants somekind of restoration and fan torrent type release. Does it?

While it's not the best presentation of the Blade Runner score, I still belive the "Esper Edition" is an important audio document of the sounds from the film Blade Runner. It also contains some background music that has never been released elsewhere.

Blade Runner (Esper Edition)

"Blade Runner (Esper Edition) – provides a comprehensive Blade Runner soundtrack. "

My vote is that the Espa Edition is very usefull, and should be preserved.

No, I would consider the FanFiltration version a "Fan Edit".

My Godfather project is not just a direct rip of a now out-of-print laserdisc presentation, but rather it's a reworking of the film using various out-of-print sources (and the DVD set for 2 scenes).

So yes, JohnnyFree is correct in calling my version a fan edit. Mainly due to the fact that I made changes to the placement order of a few scenes, and also included scenes that had never been intended to be part of the saga by the director. I made new edits to include as much footage as possible from all versions. Also, I had to make some changes to the films soundtrack so that it would blend scenes from different sources better. There are also some new title cards placed into the film to show Location and date changes in the godfather font. The most noticeable change I made, was to include the out take scene “A Family Fight (Connie and Carlo arguing at Vito's)”. This scene was very hard to insert, but I believe my new edit works quite well.

And yes, Godfather 3 is a stereo film and completely the same in all released versions on home video (which is why i'm confused about its inclusion here). I would definitely drop it as it serves no purpose.

Question: did you get a copy of the TV version beginning for 2? The version shown on TV is different from any of the home video releases.

Just some thoughts.

I'm still looking for the beginning of the T.V. version of Two. Anyone have it?

The reason I placed Godfather Part 3 on this set, was because I had removed the death of Fredo flashback from that film. If you are watching all 3 films in one go, that same death scene was shown only about 5 min before the first scene of part 3 in St. Patrick's Cathedral. With that, I felt that there was no real need or reason to flashback to Fredo Death so soon after the viewer had just seen it. GF:3 is also presented in the (Out-of-Print) full screen format, and this allows the viewer to see all 3 films in the same aspect ratio.

I think this quote says it best...

"The name of this song is "King Kong". It's the story of a very large gorilla who lived in the jungle. And he was doing okay until some Americans came by and thought that they would take him home with them. They took him to the United States, and they made some money by using the Gorilla, then they killed him."

Feedback Wanted: X-Men animated - aired order or Marvel record order?
Time
MARVEL ORDER PLEASE!

For example, the 3 Star Trek Original Series DVD sets place the episodes in airing order on their discs. Now, I must say for the record that this order just sucks! I'm showing some close friends the 60’s show for the first time, and they have all commented on how the change in production styles and characters development seem to be very disjointed in this order (especially the first 13 episodes of the first season). Please don't make this same mistake with your X-Men sets!

Info Wanted: Any PLANET OF THE APES preservationists here?
Time

I'm also a huge "Planet of the Ape's" fan, and I just went Ape (pun intended) when I found out that the original soundtracks for "Beneath the Planet of the Apes", Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" & "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" had been officially released by - Film Score Monthly - not too long ago. This is a mail order site, and I believe this official release is very limited. If you need to have these soundtracks as I did, you may want to go to the F.S.M. site and look for them.

Film Score Monthly

P.S. I've got the 3 volumes of "Man From U.N.C.L.E." original soundtracks from them too!

Thanks for asking ADM.

There most likely will be an updated letterboxed version of The FanFiltration Edit of DUNE, but I can't work on it at this time. There is just no time for me to do it justice. I've got a number of other projects that must be finished before I can think of re-making FanFiltration's DUNE. Also, I'm selling my home and moving to Hawaii in this spring...

I'm very excited that other fans are motivated to construct there own DUNE edits, and I look forward to viewing them all when available.

The next FanFiltration release is due in just a few days (Keep an eye on MYSPLEEN), and it is called "Star Wars Making Magic: The DVD".
I hope that my "Chronological Godfather" edit will be the release after that.

Send me email to FanFiltration@hotmail.com. Let's see what we can do. I'd also like to see this title in xvid/divx. That is, if it does not look that bad.

NOW RELEASED: The Godfather: 1901-1980 Epic Edit

HELP!!

Now at 5 single layer DVD's, this presentation is HUGE! Sorry but, I'm not going to sit burning DVD-R's of this all day long for P.I.F. trades. This fan edit most definitely needs a torrent style release, and with that some type of a shrink down job.

I would like to shrink it down to something more workable, like something that woulf fit on two double layer disks.
As it stands now, the quality of this edit is great, and I would like to keep it as nice looking as possible.

Is it best for a title that is as long as this Godfather edit to be offered in high quality, as well as a Xvid or quicktime type formats?

Can someone help me out with this project please?

Also, if anyone has any ideas for extras that can be included with this set please let me know via a PM or the FanFiltration@hotmail.com address.

Thanks!

Blade Runner HDTV (Released)
Time

Just have to send out a bit of extra praise to the creator of this set for the very welcome inclusion of the Gongo Soundtrack.

WOW!

Hey, I wish I had this soundtrack back when I was still doing ACID!

I'm not one to enjoy electronic music much, but this is something real special here. It reminds me allot of Pink Floyd, The Soundtrack to Local Hero, and Peter Gabriel's "Passion", but much more intense and pleasing to me.

I've found the "Esper Edition" of the soundtrack by doing a search over at torrentspy. That set is nice for having allot of direct bits from the film's audio soundtrack, but the Gongo version is a much more enjoyable album.

A CD-R of those Gongo files has been spinning non-stop in my CD player for over a week now...

Cheers!
