Well, the worst aspects of fan films are usually bad cinematography, editing, vfx, acting, and writing. Rogue One has all of those. What makes it like a fan film is the subject matter, to which I would say who cares.

It has some of the best CGI (not including Tarkin and Leia) EVER.

Even that is commendable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen better rendered CGI humans before. It’s just not perfect, which is what it needed to be to not draw criticism.

Recommendations for Legends (old EU) books, comics, etc.

Damn you mentioned pretty much the only pre-PT books I can think of. If you’re willing to go into the PT era, Darth Plagueis, Labyrinth of Evil, and the ROTS novelization are three of the best SW books I’ve read.

If we’re talking comics, the original Marvel run is an absolute delight. And the Goodwin/Williamson comics are fantastic, in both news strip and Classic Star Wars form.

As for purchasing, Amazon and ebay are both places you can find used books for dirt cheap. That’s where I get most of mine.

I have a question, are the Lando books any good?

Ranking the Star Wars films

That’s pretty silly

I enjoy the Force Awakens but fully admit that it was a very safe movie in many aspects.

I think “very safe” is greatly exaggerating things (I can think of a million ways it could have been “safer,” not to mention the word could mean a number of things), but how “safe” a movie is has almost nothing to do with its quality. So it’s a silly ranking. Might as well rank based on another arbitrary metric like how long it took to write the script (in which case TPM wins with 5 years and AOTC loses because it never had a script).

EDIT: I misunderstood, I thought you were suggesting he should have built his digs on Tatooine. In the canon comics he actually does go back to Tatooine shortly after the events of ANH and slaughters another village of Tuskens just to kill time waiting for Boba Fett to meet him.

Wait… the fuck? Is this just like a hobby of his or something?

Having just read the first Vader comic, I don’t think this is as much a what the fuck moment as before. He was meeting Fett on Tatooine, so it’s not like he went out of his way to go there and kill some Tuskens. Still points deducted because Fett is again shown to be some kind of servant to Jabba and shouldn’t have necessarily been on Tatooine in the first place, and also because the way they reveal Vader’s just murdered some more sand people for old time’s sake is kind of silly. Still, I’ll let it slide.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I actually think Disney is going to go back, 4k scan the original film since the SE would be an upscale to get it to 4k ( I think). They will clean that up and release it. From there, I could see George and Disney working together to create a new Special Edition with updated SFX/CGI to make all their ‘new canon’ fit better.

Disney has no reason to every work with George again and they wouldn’t be stupid enough to anyway.

Why does so many people not like Bodhi? I though he was one of the more identifiable of the characters. He has much more character development than say, Chirrut (which has basically none), and even Baze.

Out of all the characters, I definitely think Bodhi was the most developed. He had the clearest character arc; an Imperial defector who finds new life in the Rebellion and eventually gives his life for the cause. Baze also had an arc, but it was more of a sudden turning point than an arc that was subtly built up over the course of the movie. I got the impression that they were supposed to be secondary characters, and that Jyn and Cassian were the real protagonists, but at the end of the day I liked Bodhi, Chirrut and Baze a lot more than either Jyn or Cassian.

Like I said I don’t remember any of that shit.

For what it’s worth I agree. There wasn’t a whole lot of Bodhi and any sort of arc he had just comes from our assumptions. I’d probably say he’s the most poorly handled character if it weren’t for Ahmed’s incredibly endearing performance.

Also, “coward”? I don’t see how either Bodhi or Finn counts as cowards. Not particularly heroic from the start, sure, but that doesn’t make them cowards.

Bodhi no way, but Finn for sure. That’s his whole deal in the movie, he’s driven by fear.

Hi again, first chance to chime in about Vader again despite the topic having kind of shifted from that. So if that’s an issue I apologize.

In regards to the Bespin duel in ESB, comparing that to Vader going apeshit isn’t really the same. There’s so much context to that duel, so much feeling, so much shifting motivations, how Vader just toys with Luke for awhile and then goes all out by the end that it’s not even a fair comparison. In the new one, he just goes apeshit to a level only seen in something like The Force Unleashed, not something I personally want to see films borrow from. There’s no context, no real meaning to it, and it’s the only time he pulls out a lightsaber for anyone not wielding the same, calling to question numerous times he could have done so in the original films.

Forgive me, but I can’t honestly think of even one time.

The end of ESB shows Vader does have limitations, Luke was still incredibly inexperienced, why couldn’t Vader just lift him up at any point like he does the Rebels?

Well Vader was trying to seduce him/bring him with him. Luke was inexperienced but still had “impressive” knowledge of the Force. If you mean lift him up at the end when he drops away, I’ve always assumed Vader was just caught off guard. We know from ESB that Force users have the power to levitate so Rogue One shouldn’t be anything new in this regard.

Why would he be okay with sending in the troops onto the Tantive later on when he could just deal with them himself much more effectively?

In Rogue One, Vader was part of a boarding party (came onto the ship via shuttle). In SW, the ship that had the plans was captured by the Star Destroyer. They weren’t going anywhere this time. So Vader let his soldiers do the dirty work. Makes sense to me.

Why wouldn’t he use more effective means to torture the rebel commander on the ship, instead of accidentally kill him clumsily?

This seems like a question for SW that has nothing to do with Rogue One. We don’t have anymore reason to believe based on RO that he’d have some different and better method of torture (but we do have from SW - the mind probe).

Why do we suddenly have to confirm every character’s sexual orientation these days? Two dudes can’t be friends now without being gay? Is this grade school?

Whoooooo caaaaaaaaares.

Why can’t two guys be friends who are also more than friends? Like I said they seemed pretty gay to me, but I thought it was cool the didn’t bash you over the head with it.

Though I will say I bet gay people care a bit, considering there haven’t been any (confirmed, I mean seriously Threepio) in a SW movie yet.

Sure they can, but they came across as nothing more brotherly fellows to me. But I guess that’s “pretty gay”?

It was mostly due to how they acted during

their death scene, especially Baze staring at Chirrut longingly in his final moments. There was obviously a strong bond between them which to me felt spousal (especially stuff like Chirrut walking out on his own on Eadu and saying he won’t be alone because Baze will follow). Could easily be brotherly but homosexual I think is just as legitimate an interpretation and that’s how I took it.

I’m sure you’re joking about Threepio considering he’s a droid but I mean in my experience, you can’t really distill “what makes someone homosexual” down to their mannerisms.

More the fact he clearly is in love with R2 (but yes, a joke).

My complaint is just why is there so much emphasis on it when it’s not something that affects the characters at all? Maybe Jyn was a lesbian? Maybe Cassian was gay? Maybe Tarkin is gay? Maybe Galen was in the closet and the death of his wife allowed him to finally live his life as a gay man? Maybe all the dudes who care about each other in other war films are all gay? Does it matter? It’s not like heterosexual is the default state (we don’t need to confirm that Han Solo is straight, and shit, maybe he isn’t!), so the distinction is unimportant unless it plays a part in the story.

I don’t think there’s really that much emphasis on it. It’s more about considering the relationship between two characters, which I would say affects them. I don’t really care if Obi-Wan is gay, doesn’t affect who he is in Episodes II through VI, but it could change how I view his relationship with Qui-Gonn if I thought it was the case (note: don’t think it is, not enough evidence). Whether Han Solo is bisexual doesn’t really matter as the fact that he likes dudes doesn’t really apply at all, but certainly his love for Leia is something that informs their scenes together. Obviously that’s explicit and baked more into the story, but with small characters like Chirrut and Baze, to which we know less, it makes sense to speculate about what makes them tick. It’s the same thing with Kanan and Hera. We don’t know for sure, which is fine, but it seems very fair to speculate as it would totally change how we view their interactions.

Maybe you should take a look in a fucking mirror. You’re at least as responsible as anyone else if not moreso. And it’s only gotten worse since Jay’s warning.

Ahhhhh, I have already said as much.

Don’t think this really cuts it

FTR, I will say that I have had some fairly unsavory moments myself, mostly out of frustration. Since Jay made public requests for things to mellow I believe I have had far better conversation between some folks and less haphazard ramblings. To me that is a plus. It shows that adjusting ones tactics to how they post can help. If everyone took this opportunity to do so I think we’d see things change for the better and people who really need to be weeded out get booted.

You say moments and that you’ve been better but 90% of your posts have been ragging on other members since then. So BS.

You are very quick to subscribe blame to others but not so quick to take some for yourself. Your post is a good example of what I’ve said.

This is the first time I’ve responded to you in about two months. I don’t care much for the petty squabbling and bitching about other members that it seems you can never get enough of. It’s just the hypocrisy that really annoys me.

We should all start a private thread and leave Darth Id out of it like he was left out of all the games in elementary school. Then we can point and laugh at how much of a loser he is and maybe he’ll cry and leave us all for good.

…but…if it’s private and I’m left out, how will I know you’re laughing at me and how much of a loser I am so as to impel me to cry and leave you all for good?

Because I just told you.

We will continue the forum in the private topic.

All public threads that you have access to will only consist of the pointing and the laughing.
