What’s funny to me is people complained that TFA played it too safe, now this did the opposite of that and people are still complaining.

That’s the thing. At least fans should be a bit consistent. I personally really, really enjoyed The Force Awakens but my main gripe was that it played it too safe. So no wonder the Last Jedi felt so refreshing and amazing to me.

I personally felt that both served the purposes they needed to. As happy as I am that JJ will be back, I do still wish they brought in someone else to bring it somewhere else (though here’s hoping JJ can deliver).

Also, since I guess my review will just come out in random fragments, here’s something I just realized: my least favorite scenes in TFA were Snoke scenes, my most favorite scenes in TLJ were Snoke scenes.

I guess somehow I’m an odd man out even though beyond this site I feel like the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

To address a couple complaints… One of the bigger surprises was that I had no idea this would be the funniest Star Wars film. All of the comedy was pitch perfect, I thought. And am I the only one who LOVED that Leia moment? The only scene that brought tears to my eyes.

I’m very neutral on Luke’s death, I can see both sides of that. Need to watch again.

The biggest disappointment is that they so clearly set up a story that can’t be told anymore.

Which story thread specifically? I do agree that this feels like the end of a saga/trilogy and I’m honestly fine with that. Depending on how episode 9 turns out, I am fine with this as the last film of the saga. Not a cut and dry fairy tale ending but you still feel that Kylo lost and the heroes won. I know it sounds crazy but the emotion feels that way. Not the actual galactic situation.

It seems pretty clear that Leia was going to have a big part in IX, obviously in leading the Resistance but also in mentoring Rey and most likely saving Ben.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * NON SPOILER * THREAD
Time

So I’m seeing the film in a little over an hour from now (still trying to get over the fact that living on the West coast now means I see everything 3 hours late) and honestly it’s pretty crazy. Like it’s still hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that new Star Wars movies are even a thing, and now we have Episode VIII when I’m just getting used to the fact that TFA exists!

I always thought VIII would be my favorite, even before I saw TFA, for a number of reasons, obviously in part because I find Rian Johnson an incredibly smart filmmaker (and I genuinely nice guy, met him twice now!), but mostly because the first part of the trilogy has the burden of setting things up (and the third part the burden of concluding things), while the second part has the luxury of being the real meat of it, of getting to dig deeper into the characters and the story.

I’m really excited that I don’t know much about the film and, while I have predictions, for the most part I don’t have much of an idea, which is awesome. I’ve tried to stay away from reactions so that I don’t get overhyped or that my expectations are raised too high, but it’s hard not to have high hopes. Either way, I’m trying to stay open minded to the story they have to tell (as my expectations harsher a bit my thought on TFA the first time I saw it, before I was able to take it for what it is).

Anyways, that’s my ramble, let’s fucking go guys new Star Wars tonight! May the force be with us all.

Dom's Useless Prequel Edits
Time

Okay so obviously I’m dumb and I said I’d be done with these before TLJ, which at this point isn’t even close to true because I got a new job basically a week after I posted that and haven’t worked on it since then. I’ll be out of that job soon though, so maybe we’ll see some progress (and maybe I’ll post some color correction examples this weekend).

Star Wars "Official" Canon Content Thread
Time

So I’ve gone through a lot of stuff in the past month…

 • From a Certain Point of View Audiobook - bit of a mixed bag but pretty enjoyable on the whole
 • The Princess Leia and Shattered Empire comics, which are short but still enjoyable
 • The Poe Dameron comic (Volumes 1-3) which is pretty great and easily the best stuff I’ve read from the new Marvel run
 • The Battlefront II campaign which is very light but also satisfying if you’ve read Inferno Squad, Shattered Empire, and Empire’s End
 • The Captain Phasma comic series which is really cool and makes a great pair with the Phasma book

Overall I have to say I’m very much liking most of the new canon stuff I’m seeing, and some of the synergy going on is fairly well done.

The most likely conclusion to draw from all of this is just that Pablo Hidalgo is being a jerk.

I don’t know what he’s done that would cause anyone to think he’s a jerk, but then again I guess you think most people are anyway.

I don’t think most people are jerks. I don’t like most of them but I don’t think they’re jerks. Pablo seems smug to me. I also just said that he was “being a jerk,” not that he was one.

I don’t know where you’re getting smugness from, I don’t see any of that here.

The more I hear about this Paul guy, the less I like him. Kudos to him for at least saying something about it.

First of all, he literally says he agrees with us. Second of all, he’s just stating the facts (however cryptic, though even then this is far from his department so he’s probably not at liberty to divulge). It’s not like it’s his decision.

My guess is it’s money.

Petition to give Warbler his Sigh Back
Time

The “sigh” is like dessert. You have to eat your actual food too if you want to have it.

I don’t see why there’s anything wrong with that, especially considering the “sigh” only posts are essentially the same as image only posts as they add nothing to the conversation at hand and can cause further confusion (something that tends to happen a lot around here).

are you saying even tho he has seen we still will believe he only likes it because of hype?

That would be “likes it better than ESB” because of hype.

I’m not saying I do. I’m saying people put R1 or TFA at the top of their list and then get blasted by someone for succumbing to hype and spectacle.

But you’re forgetting none of us have seen TLJ so we have no idea if he’s off base or not.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

I personally don’t understand how a (relatively) light fan edit like this can cause such a massive change in opinion from someone, but power to them, and impressive work then on the edit. It’s a delightful film, really, so I’m happy to see people enjoy it, even if it takes some changes.

I’m excited to watch the finished v2 when I get the chance, seems like you guys did a fantastic job.
