4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

moviefreakedmind said:

So, this means that if RMW is doing this 4K restoration, they have to restore the unaltered scenes of Mos Eisley, Yavin, Death Star, etc. etc. and then go back in and recreate all the lame CGI?

That would be the best method (rescan the negative and it will still be upscaled 2k. You think the Star Trek TNG blu-rays settled for upscaled 480i special effects?), but they don't have to recreate it to look as bad as it did before

Unfortunately, there are many special editions changes that I liked. I thought that the new death star battle was an improvement over the old one, and the new audio cues for the empire strikes back star destroyer scenes are an improvement over the original, which seemed lazy and incomplete (listen to the imperial march as it was played in the scene where captain needa heads to the executor and the scene right before we see the bounty hunters and compare it with the special edition from the original.) The only parts of the ROTJ special editions were the cleaned effects. I can tolerate the rancor beak, but I didn't care for the new celebration scenes and I hated jedi rocks (to be fair, the song isn't horrible. It fit pretty well in Star Wars Battlefront 2's Jedi assault mode IMO, but seeing Sy Snootles lips almost swallow the camera and the endor guy opening his big mouth turned me off. I'd hate to see that scene in 3d xD. Even if those parts weren't a problem, the cgi doesn't blend well with jabbas palace full of muppets...).

TL:DR A few of the changes of the ANH and ESB special editions are improvements, so I'd hate to see them go.

IMO they should release both the OUT and a new SE with redone CG effects which fit the source material better and don't look as dated as the original special editions. There should also be a toggle so you could pick how you want your star wars to look without resorting to fan edits (OUT "look sir droids", shortened SE "look sir droids", original SE "look sir droids"; no jabba, human jabba, 1997 jabba, 2004 jabba, maybe a new jabba?; etc.)

edit: one more point. If the new emperor scene from the 04 ESB and the Christenson Anakin ghost in the 04 ROTJ were recorded the same way AOTC and ROTS were (*cough* 1080p digital *cough*) then they will never be 4k, ever...

How engrish of you... 'Backstroke of the West' dub
Time

It's been a few days, and this thread was about to go off the page, so... Bump!

So this thread has been viewed 140 times and nobody has given me a response on where to get these subs? (the post about the link being broken doesn't count)

At least does anybody know anything about this particular bootleg? Are they hard subs or soft subs? Where does the video come from? How about the audio? Did the group who produced this bootleg have similarly bad subtitles for their other star wars releases?

lossless h.264 editing (preferably open source and on linux)
Time

I would like to make my own personal edit of ANH based off of Harmy's despecialized 2.5 and his respecialized 97se. The reason being that I prefer some of the special effects of the SE (death star battle, maybe some clean ups) but prefer the special effects of the original version in other instances (the entire scene where Luke drives his landspeeder to the cantina).

The trouble is, I would like to losslessly combine elements of the two together (of course, that means that no quality is lost except for transitions between source). Is it possible to losslessly edit h.264 footage together?

While audio is a completely different issue (finding where everything lines up, and choosing the best elements from my favorite mixes; the main issue would be converting the final product into dts hd ma, because I don't have $1500 on my hands.), video seems harder to edit, as I don't want the whole thing re-encoded, just the parts where re-encoding is necessary.

I would prefer it if the video editor used was free, open source, and linux friendly, but if such options are not available, I can use windows, as long as the software is cheap. Mac OS X software is out.

Help: looking for... a star wars 1997 special edition preservation
Time

*sigh*

Harmy's Respecialized for ANH, Adywan's hd 97se reconstruction for ESB, and for ROTJ the Team Blu release (if it has been released), otherwise look for laserdisc and DTV transfers for ROTJ.

Users here really don't like it when newbies ask for download links. That was one of my biggest mistakes when I first joined this forum. There is a stickied thread which contains the following....

The originaltrilogy.com forum provides information about fan projects. Due to the underground nature of this scene, there are no downloads or torrent links posted here. You are expected to search out these projects yourself.

If after a while you can't find links to these releases or any other releases of the 97se, let me know. I might pm you some links for some of these if you can't find them after a few days.

Which special editions are canon?
Time

Two of the reasons I asked about this are:

The 97se of ANH was recently screened in maryland. It was the only version they were allowed to screen as 35mm film (2004 and 2011 are purely digital, and with less resolution at that). The possibility of the rumored 4k release being a direct port of the 97se also gives it a little credibility.

In addition, several months ago ANH aired on spike tv. For some reason, the 2004 transfer was used instead of the 2011.

While the OUT has no authority anymore, possibly at best banished to Legends, the canon of each of the SE releases can be a little confusing.....

I guess your saying that the newer releases are, the more authority they have?

...and I meant to say months instead of years... I'll fix that in the post...

Which special editions are canon?
Time

With disney's new canon set several months ago, what is considered canon? It is highly unlikely the OUT is canon anymore, so which special edition is canon? The last I heard was the 2004 is canon, but that was before the 2011 came out. And regardless, the rumored 4k transfer coming out might come straight from the 97se. So I ask again, which of the special editions are canon?

edit: what a goose I am. This belongs in "general star wars discussion" i think. Can an admin move this thread there?

Info Wanted: This question might be a bit weird but i am looking for the real originals ( low quality )
Time

No offense, but your English doesn't sound very good. What is your primary language? What country are you from? If you prefer watching the original trilogy in your own language, it would nice to know what is is, unless you prefer watching it in English.

Most people in originaltrilogy.com don't post their fan edits or preservations directly on the threads because of fear of copyright law. By making it harder to find, it's easier to circulate. I know that might sound a little crazy, but its no more crazy than your preference for versions of star wars with bad video quality.

Someone uploaded clips of the Puggo Grande and the Pug Strikes Back, if you want to check if the quality fits your standards.

I might be able to pm you links to the Puggo Grande and the Pug Strikes Back, but there are no guarantees that the links will work.

Remember, google is your friend.

The 2004/2011 special editions are infamous for their horrible colors and missing audio cues. Then again, the GOUT has bad DVNR.

First of all, what do you mean by "real"?

If by real you mean official, then yes, the GOUT is the best way to go (specifically NTSC GOUT for ANH and ESB; and PAL GOUT for ROTJ, unless your dvd player can only handle one format) for video quality. The definitive edition laserdiscs, despite the slightly lower video quality compared to the GOUT, has superior audio (uncompressed instead of Dolby Digital AC3), but uses the same sound mix.

If by real you mean no special edition footage whatsoever, even if the footage is almost identical to the original, then I would suggest the Dark Jedi GOUT DVD's and the related Team Blu GOUT blu-rays. I, like many on the forum, am impatiently waiting for the negative one project to be completed. 35mm prints of all three films of the original trilogy. If you're too impatient, the Puggo Grande, Pug Strikes Back, and Return of the Pug are based off 16mm prints of ANH, ESB, and ROTJ respectively. They might be the closest to "real" you are going to get atm, but sometimes it is said that they look worse than the GOUT. Shame that Puggo doesn't have any way to scan those prints in HD. It could have helped people like Harmy...

Anyways, those are your options. I hope you find what you're looking for, even if I don't understand myself.
