GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

G-force, I have just seen your recently uploaded Star Wars, and it is amazing!  I have seen a number of other attempts to clean up the theatrical version, and this is the best so far.  I'm so glad it features, "Blast it, Biggs, where are you?", as SW is not the same without this version of the line for me.

I cannot wait for ESB and ROTJ.  Thank you so much!

One thing I am curious about is that when people try to restore the GOUT they never use SE footage.  It seems to me that over 90% of the OT is untouched by alterations, so why not use footage from that - color-corrected of course - and just work on restoring the scenes that do differ as much as possible - rather than the whole film.

Because of course, only Adywan can save the damn Prequels....

(I'm not putting Adywan or his skills down whatsoever... I just find it so fricken hysterical of these people that believe that he's the only editor out there who can properly edit the SW Prequels into the great "dream come true" movies that everyone desired the Prequels films to be...

The issue is that the problems with the prequels are largely intertwined with the limited amount of good material.  The prequels require far more extensive work even than that which was put into ANH:R in my opinion.  Adywan is the only editor who has demonstrated anything like the technical skills that would be necessary, which is why people look to him, but I don't believe anyone at all can save them.

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

Well, as you used Imgburn, it would have prompted you to use UDF 2.50 when you burnt the ISOs, so I would imagine you did this.  When you put the disc into the player, what exactly happens?  Do you just see a black screen?  Is there not an error message of some kind?

If your player plays ESB and TPM, it must support AVCHDs, so that's not the problem.  The only difference between ANH and the other AVCHDs is that ANH is a pure 24fps, whereas the others are 23.976 fps.  This has been known to cause problems with some players, but this usually manifests itself in the audio drifting out of sync with the video as the film progresses.  What model is your blu-ray player?

Thanks for the clarification, Adywan.  Sorry for causing confusion.  It was this kind of post from all the way back in June 20, 2008 that originally confused me. I always wondered about this after the way the first page's information was written, but never got round to mentioning it until we were talking about it a few nights ago. :-)  I hope you had a good Christmas.

mine will be totally different than the Wookiegroomer versions. The OT will be colour corrected, Han shoots first (same as your wookiegroomer version), Boba's original & new voice (selectable), maybe re-rotoscoped lightsabers (still deciding), commentaries, original ESB Emperor restored, Hayden force ghost replaced with original Sebastian Shaw version and maybe some other tweaks. Although, apart from commentaries, the PT will be pretty much the same so i may not bother with those now.

Lowry also messed up the colors on the wrath of khan restoration.  The uniforms look orange instead of red.  Some scenes have an awful blu tint that was not their before.

May I ask, when you say Lowry's restoration, are you referring to the restoration that was done for the director's cut on DVD, or the restoration for the theatrical cut on blu-ray?  I would be really interested to know.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

Well, I read this thread through and watched the DVD.  This preservation is incredible, and while it is very dark in places the colors are much better than I expected.  This is a real treat, especially with the mono mix.

Interestingly, I remember it being said that the rocks when Kenobi rescues Luke looked a little white in Adywan's color correction, but they look very white here.  I know that the 16mm cannot be used a reliable guide to the color of the 1977 prints, but perhaps Adywan's color correction in this scene was spot on after all.  I just found this interesting - that's all. :)

I loved the Super 8mm versions of SW and ESB too.  Many thanks, Puggo! :-)

No worries!  When ROTJ comes out it should have Sebastian Shaw back as the ghost of Anakan.

I wonder what happened to the idea of having two audio tracks; one with Jason Wingreen's voice and one with Temuera Morrison's.  My AVCHD only has one main audio track (excluding the commentary track).  Whose voice is it?  (I'm not very good at judging, but it sounds like Wingreen's)

EDIT:  I might have got this AVCHD from torrent not newsgroups, so maybe it's missing an audio track.

I'm especially glad to have "The Empire Strikes Back" since it is based on the 1997 SE which somehow was aired on German TV!

Adywan made changes to this to make it virtually identical to the 1997 SE, notably the restoration of Clive Revill as the emperor.  It was not "somehow aired on German TV".  The German TV broadcast was the 2004 SE.

Wow!  Was it really necessary to quote all of that to add a two-line comment?

I'm sure Adywan doesn't mean that it is absolutely impossible - rather that it would be so difficult as to be practically impossible and therefore not worth bothering with.

Sorry, but what would the point of having it be an AVCHD be?

I don't like PAL speed up.  I do actually notice it.  It irritates me.

I don't like NTSC telecine judder.  I do actually notice it.  It irritates me.

AVCHDs have neither of those problems.  There is also the fact that h.264 video on a DVD-5 AVCHD almost certainly has the same quality as MPEG-2 video on a standard definition DVD-9, and DVD-5s are cheaper.

That really does add insult to injury.  Not to mention the fact that selling fanmade products that look like official releases could potentially cause all kinds of trouble that have so far been avoided.

Maybe the OCP bit was a smoke-screen...

I sure was surprised when version 2.0 of Deleted Magic was released with the "Revisited" title. Surely they could have thought of something else! It just looks like they're piggybacking on your success.

I'm going to have to disagree here.  The use of the term "revisited" to denote a second improved version of a work is well established, and Adywan hardly invented it or has a monopoly on it.

If this OCP fellow really is passing off ANH:R as his own work, then that is of course utterly deplorable.    I can't believe people have the audacity to sell what others have done for free.  :-(

The fur looks good though!

I posted this review at SW Message Boards and one guy said he turned it off after the second "F" word, and another just refused to watch it.

I hate deluded, fan-boy people like this.

Surely the person Ghost was referring to had an issue with the language not the content, if he turned it off after the second F-word.  How does disliking swearing make someone a deluded fan-boy?

That's some good news, did the WDTV also show the menu?

No; it only plays the film.  This is also the case with DVD and AVCHD ISOs.  The lack of menus doesn't bother me though.

Back on topic, I can only find a BD-50 of ROTJ in the usual place: it's the one with the audio fix.  Was there no BD-25?

I've been trying to download it, but the download has stopped half the way through, and the files I have downloaded all seem to be incomplete.  I don't know if I will be able to recover this archive, even with PAR files. :-(

Thank you, 8t88!  I knew where the mt2s was, but I didn't know one could mount a blu-ray ISO.  I mounted the ISO - for ISO it was - using a program called Virtual Clone Drive.

As it happens, I didn' t need to do so.  The WD HD media player can play blu-ray ISOs.  Isn't that amazing?  Everything I read led me to believe that it couldn't play blu-ray ISOs, but the ISO played without any problems at all.

Now I can download all Wookie Groomer's releases and play them without ever having to burn them.  I've already played ROTS, and the quality of the BD-25 is amazing!  Thank you so much, Wookie Groomer.  :-)

What happened to the AVCHDs?  Are they still in production?  I downloaded the DVDs from the usual place, a while ago, but I have not seen the AVCHDs.

If this GOUT sourced AVCHD really is of a reasonably high quality, couldn't a hybrid be made with Darth Editous new 480p project?  One could take the footage that was untouched in the special edition, replete with all DE's fixes, and add in the theatrical footage for places where the special addition did make changes, such as Mos Eisley.  This would make a restored theatrical version, but one with DE's fixes.  That sounds like the perfect Star Wars to me.

I know there would be a slight difference in quality between the two, but I for one would find that acceptable.  Much as I admire Adywan's ANH:R, I ultimately prefer the original films; at the same time, I am not such a purist that I don't appreciate all DE's fixes.  This sounds like a perfect way to make a polished theatrical version.

Do DJ and DE have any thoughts on this?

Are these releases on newsgroups in the form of a blu-ray ISO or just the BDMV and Certificate folders?

I ask because I am able to download them, but not burn them, at the moment, as I have no blu-ray drive on my PC.  I was hoping to play the m2ts files on my WD HD media player, or otherwise turn them into mkv files, but I don't think I would be able to extract a blu-ray ISO.

I am only interested in Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith; the BD-25 versions would be fine.  I would be grateful for any help/advice.  (I'm in the UK.)
