However, when you start complaining about derailments and pictures again, it makes me a little irritated.  So I push back.

I am not lacking in calm, just disappointed you guys are so keen on stirring up trouble every time you see an opportunity.

All I did this time was essentially ask for you and Gryphon to stop snapping at each other, and so in your irritation you pushed back and your little play buddies joined in, and now we have managed to muck up even more pages. Congratulations, you effectively took the intention of my offending post and pushed for the opposite effect and got it. I think it is fair to say you won! Wooohooo! Go Fink!!!

You couldn't be more wrong about me not playing these games or wanting to discuss them.  I spent tons of time and money in arcades in the 80's and early 90's.  I (or my parents) owned a Bally Odyssey, an Atari 2600, an Apple IIc, and a Sega Genesis.  I spent plenty of time playing friends Intellivisions, Colecovisions, Atari 7800s, NES, C64s, and Sega CD.  I'm always willing to discuss Frogger, Warlords, River Raid, Dragon's Lair, Xenophobe, Cyberball, Tecmo Bowl, Punch-Out, Adventure, Combat, E.T., etc. etc. etc.  Personally, I like pictures of these games because it helps bring me back to those days, so what's the big deal?

There is no big deal about it. I don't mind your old game pictures. I have already said that. All I complained about was you and Gryphon going at it.

You're gaming seems to pre-date mine by about 5 - 10 years, I am personally very interested in old games and systems, in fact, often when you post game images I wish you'd caption them with a game title and the platform you played the on, since I recognize very few of them. The fact that you never really have (save for a few occasions) has always given me the impression you have simply been GISing "old games" and posting random pics. Even if that was the case, it wouldn't bother me in the least.

Again, there is no big deal and I made no complaint about them.

You're entitled to your opinion.  But I'm not posting differently now then I was before.

No, and your pictures are easy enough to ignore on their own, so they never really bothered me before. Now you have developed a troop of followers who like to follow your lead, and now, like you hold my initial fateful post in the Politics section against me and try to stick it too me whenever the opportunity arises.

Again, all I did this time was ask for you and Gryphon to stop fighting, obviously an unreasonable request, and was met with a wad of pictures. I commented on how that wad was obviously shot my direction in spite, and I was answered with confirmation that it was, and now we have reached this lovely level of nastiness and derailment.

Wow, I didn't expect Bingowings to be such a huge fan of games made for small children. I always took him for a fellow of far more mature tastes than that... no wonder he is so easily amused by infantile humor and silly pictures.

Okay, so I get the fact that you find rimming quite enjoyable, but don't you ever need to come up for air? Too much of a good thing isn't good, my friend. Geez, these days you are to Bingowings what Rick McCallum is to George Lucas.

It is pretty blatant that you guys just do shit like that now to annoy me. So thanks, I appreciate it.

Of course they do!  The more you try to get them to stop, and tell them how immature they are, and how they're derailing the thread, the more gifs they'll post, simply because they know you'll get angrier and make more angry posts telling them to stop.

I'm not going to deny this.  However, I certainly don't see anything wrong with posting pictures and gifs of old school video games.  The OP doesn't say anything about not doing it, nor does it really go against the spirit of the thread as far as I can tell.

No, the OP doesn't say anything about not doing it. So, I guess you have to ask yourself: Why am I posting pictures and gifs of old school games?

I suspect two reason,

1). You're bored and have absolutely nothing better to do (pretty obvious assumption to make).

2). Now that I have spoken up about this a few months ago and you know blatant pointless derailments bug me, you get thrills from pushing my button (which you just admitted to in the above quote).

Either way, it isn't because you care about the conversation or have anything to contribute, you just do it for the hell of it. You don't want to discuss those old games, you probably have never even played most of them. I really don't even mind the old games pictures. They are absolutely pointless and a waste of time to look at, but so are a lot of things in off topic. But you guys feed off each other in a really weird way.

One of you will post a pointless pic, then you will all join in on a massive attempt at derailment, posting a series of random pictures usually carrying things on to the next page. It is really lame and childish, and makes it hard for me to maintain the slightest amount of respect for the participants who are doing what I see as the forum equivalent of someone being obnoxious in a movie theater, just because they know it will piss off their fellow movies goers, and they know they can get away with it.

I guess I should try to sympathize with you though. Your pointless SOS threads seem to have lost their thunder after all this time, guess most people can only be entertained by that kind of tripe for so long, so it is not surprising you have to look to whatever threads you can to keep that itchy post finger of yours busy.

I am thinking about nabbing ACII, but I really wouldn't have time to play it. Just bought Reach and plan on getting New Vegas on release, between those two and the upcoming Black Ops (not to mention my untouched backlog of good deals from the past that I have yet to get around to playing), I expect I have more than enough to keep all my play time booked for the rest of the year at least.

Oh yeah, and then there is that upcoming Borderlands DLC, that'll keep me busy for a while as well. Almost have 100% achievements in that game... if only some of those Mad Moxxi achievos were not so time consuming as to make them nearly impossible. :(

But I'm ridiculously excited for New Vegas!  I popped in Fallout 3 earlier today to test out my roommate's new projector and 7.1 surround system, and it was glorious.

That sounds very pleasant. After getting used to playing games on a 50 inch wide screen TV with surround sound for a few months, I am afraid I will be playing New Vegas on a very small TV through a pair of headphones... :( But I am still excited to play it.

Okay, seriously! What the hell is it with you guys? You just jump in here and attempt to derail for no reason. Pretty immature.

Fink, I was addressing Gryphon as much if not more than I was addressing you, but thanks for taking it so personally. Besides, you posted your gif, which obviously pissed Gryphon off and started the mess, before he called anyone a "fucking idiot". You seem upset that I didn't join the fight and defend you, but rather ignored everything and continued on topic. Honestly, I didn't even read the text on either of your posts, I saw there was fighting, I asked if we could cool it, and continued on topic.

Actually, every time I find myself in a situation where I have to use someone elses PC, I usually run into enough problems that I become extremely thankful I am, apparently, a "dumbfuck" of an Apple user. It just works, and that is what I need. I wouldn't mind being able to play a 10+ year old game on my computer, but not being able to isn't a very big deal when it does everything else I need it to do flawlessly and headache free.

And it has nothing to do with looks. My MacBook is really beat up, and rather unpleasant looking these days, but she still runs as good as the day I bought her. It is also worth mentioning that this is the sixth laptop I have owned in the last ten years and my first Apple, and quality wise it is far above and beyond any of the others I have owned.

Nice, I love it when threads get derailed pointlessly like this, then get filled with dumb gifs and pictures. Absolutely awesome! But maybe we could try not doing that.

And now for something entirely non-sarcastic.

That is cool you are going to play System Shock 2, Gryphon. A little dated, but a good game none the less. I have wanted to play it on my Mac for a long time, actually found an unofficial port of it, but unfortunately my MacBook's graphics card has issues with it. :(

In other news, in my excitement for Fallout Vegas, I have really been wanting a Fallout fix, and unfortunately lost my save file for Fallout 3 and don't have the heart to start over. So I decided to give the original Fallout another shot, after all, it does appear on just about every top fifty greatest PC games of all time lists, so I had to be missing something in disliking it as much as I did. Now that I have given it a second chance, I am beginning to enjoy it. I am really not a fan of turned based RPGs, so the combat is what really doesn't work for me. But now that I have played far enough to have a companion with me, the turn based combat isn't as bad.

Interestingly enough, even though there is a Mac version of both Fallout 1 and 2, thanks to Apple dropping 256 color support in later versions of Leopard, neither of them work on modern machines (I love my Mac, but it is at times like this when I really have no ammo for argument against obsessive Windows users who like to make a big deal about being able to do so much more on Windows. The reality of the matter is that they are right, and by dropping support for older programs, Apple proves they just really don't care), so I had to resort to hunting down a DOS version to run through DOSBox.

That is really weird that they would include that voice over. I still have zero background on the movie, but heard it was good shortly after it first came out and have intended to see it ever since. Guess I just kind of forgot about it. Now that this thread has renewed my interest in seeing it, I'll be on the look out for the director's cut in order to avoid that VO.

DuracellEnergizer didn't say it failed for him, he seemed to be saying it failed in general because of the type of humor used.

I shouldn't have used the plural "guys" in my second post to DuracellEnergizer, I actually didn't mean to indicate Fink to be included in "guys", I am not sure why I made it plural. Maybe I am just used to addressing multiple people in my posts.

Family Guy Star Wars Trilogy?

Actually, given the number of really stupid Family Guy fans, and the vast number of references to literature, classic film, history, and high art, that such ignorant fans are unlikely to have ever come into contact with, I am thinking it succeeds perfectly fine whether people get the references or not. I find Family Guy's tendency to reference works much more intelligent and worthwhile than itself as its lone redeeming factor, in my eyes. Anything that can make brainless potheads or culturally challenged high schoolers recite quotes from Casablanca or sing tunes from My Fair Lady gets at least a mild applause from me.

Again, I really think you guys are using the term "fail" quite incorrectly. The show is insanely popular and very successful.

Of course fails for me is a relative thing.  I did say "me," right?  And where did I say it isn't successful?  I'm just saying I don't think it's funny.

Sorry, my mistake. When I hear words like "failure" and "fail" I tend to think of real actual dictionary definitions, not internet jargon.

In real life, "succeed" and "fail" are opposites, thus when someone says something fails, they are saying it is not successful.

That is actually really cool that Telltale is doing that, those old games used to come with cool swag in the box, so it is appropriate that the publisher who revived old adventure games has also gone for reviving the swag.

Unfortunately, I haven't really had any interest in the new Sam & Max games or even the new Monkey Island episodes (played the first one thanks to you giving us the heads up when they were giving it away for free on talk like a pirate day, I think it was). Just came a few years too late for me. Still love the originals because of the nostalgia factor, but I really couldn't see myself getting caught up in any new adventures of Guybrush Tweepfrood.

The JK2 dismemberment cheat wasn't so much a cheat. I remember using that when I first played through it (if we are talking about the same thing, it is where you edited or replaced a file which made dismemberment much more frequent, right?), that just made things a whole lot more fun. JK2 had the saber burn marks down perfectly...

Anywho...

I cannot believe Fallout New Vegas is less than a month away. Decided to look into pre-ordering it today, and was looking around for the best deal. I don't really care about in game items, which at first seemed to be all anyone was offering, but in my searches, a unique piece of actual physical swag caught my eye. BestBuy is offering a set of drink coasters with pre-order. Even though they are just lame coasters, I am a sucker for swag, so BestBuy won my pre-order... until I discovered Kmart has the same deal only... it is the weirdest pre-order in the history of pre-orders (I think). You buy the coasters for five dollars, and are given a $15 dollar off coupon only good between Oct. 19 - 30. The real fun part is it is good for $15 off ANY video game, regular, sale, or clearance price, not just New Vegas.

Long story short, ran out and bought two of the things, and can now get $15 off any two games between the 19th and 30th, and can still pre-order FONV from wherever I want.

Coasters (set of four) are just regular cardboard bar style coasters, but it is kind of nice to see real physical pre-order swag once again.

I SAID I WAS JUST KIDDING!!

You had better not...

Let's talk about BioShock some more.  My favorite feature is when you can toggle between the rockets and the cluster-bombs.

Yeah, the Screw Attack is by far my favorite move! Though when you unlock the ability to roll along the walls and ceiling is really cool too! Oh, and how about the end when you get to ram your drill through Mother Brain!! And just when you think it is over and you've beaten the game... BAM! Countdown begins and you've got to get out of there FAST! Such an adrenaline rush! Getting the Big Daddy to jump on all those platforms on the way back up to the surface was a pain!

Wow... I really want to play this game now. Fusing Bioshock and Metroid sounds awesome...

This is really disappointing to hear... what is up with cheating. Neither HL or HL2 are extremely difficult games, and they both have adjustable difficulty settings for those who are not up to the task. I don't see any reason to cheat.

And Nanner, what the hell! Go beat HL1 now! ;) The last parts of that game are pretty awesome, actually. And once you beat it, play Opposing Force and Blue Shift, since they ought to be included in your GOTY edition via Steam.

Though I have just condemned cheat codes, I am actually a bit fan of them for their ability to add reply value. I think it is a total shame to use them on your first play through, but once you have beaten the game, they can add a lot of fun. I read that the reason why most newer games lack debug modes is because they actually harm sales of the games. People use cheats and beat the game and grow tired of it faster, then they turn around and sell it, contributing to a higher supply of used games on the market which in turn makes for a lower demand for brand new games, which ultimately makes the developers lose money. I would have never imagined cheat codes causing those kinds of problems, but it kind of makes sense.
