Info Wanted: on Old Japanese VHS Videocassette and VHD Dealers?
Time

According to http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%82%A4%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%83%BB%E3%82%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%83%9C%E3%83%83%E3%83%84 , Mighty Orbots was re-broadcast in Japan on Animax (a basic cable/satellite channel), although it looks like Animax took down their page for it that's linked in the article.

Have you tried looking for it on Japanese P2P?  Digital recordings from the re-airings would probably look better.

Perhaps a DVD release might also be released in Japan someday, or a non-upscaled Blu-ray if we're really lucky.

Info: HD-DVD to Blu-ray conversion with ClownBD
Time

Guide looks pretty good!  I've never actually used ClownBD, I've always used eac3to and TSmuxer separately. I might've been doing it the hard way, but oh well.

One minor thing:

Dolby Digital Plus aka E-AC3 is not BD-friendly,

This actually depends on the player.  I believe most don't support it, but some will.  My Panasonic DMP-BDT310 plays discs muxed with DD+ just fine. My Oppo BDP-80 will play it so long as the player is set to LPCM and not bitstream. I think I remember someone on AVS saying the same was true for his Pioneer player.

But yeah, the PS3 freezes up when you try to play a disc with DD+.

I have Apollo 13 on HD-DVD, and on AC3 and DTS laserdiscs too; but I have not found (yet) a free software to rip the HD-DVD to hard disk...

There's the free Lite version of DVDFab Passkey, which works with all HD DVDs I believe.  There's also an old Java program called Dump HD: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123111

I already muxed in the DTS-MA from the BD with the VC1 from the HD DVD for Apollo 13 a couple years ago, it worked pretty well.  You need to apply a -431ms delay to the DTS-MA according to this thread on AVS: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1243394/apollo-13-comparison-pix/300#post_19996540

What matters most is I complete my custom 7-Disc Viva Elite project and all that's missing are these two custom discs.

Well glad we could help you achieve this.........

Sarcasm duly noted but I figure I'll be adding random discs I make myself, lots of extra features, so I could possibly be getting this up to 9 or 10 discs. Yes, I'll be seeding too.

IDGAF about my own projects as long as I'll be able to share them freely.

EDIT: Yup, I will PIF.

Tried to send you a PM but I appear to be getting the same error as DoomBot (I'm in no hurry though).

Could someone possibly upload one or both versions to TP, or maybe PM me and work out a deal?  I can't do torrents, and even though I contributed a bunch of Laserdisc PCM tracks (some I synched myself) for Team Blu's upcoming projects and offered to donate $60 worth of blanks, DJ refused to help me.

Yes you did some work and we thank you for that, not as much as you claim here lol, and your "donation" is not worth it at all, so you do what you have to do and lets keep the personal attacks out of it, and you are not the only person I "refused" lol, you were also told the reasons in PM so there is no reason to re hash everything again.

Thanks

*edit, and this is just the kind of comment that really makes forgoing all this that much easier, I will leave it at that.

For the record, I sent you at least 4 PCM tracks (2 of which I bought the LDs specifically for you and synched them myself) and an LD-only video extra, and I never made a personal attack.  I offered to send $60 of BDs and only asked for around $10 worth back, mainly for the projects I was helping out on.  If that's not "worth it at all", then the words "you ask the impossible" come to mind.  I'm not surprised you don't get many repeat donators.

The original toy prototype (as shown in catalog images http://tfwiki.net/wiki/File:G1catalog86-PinkHotRod.jpg ) was also magenta, so that's likely what was intended before the change, but the movie was probably already in the can by then.

The Masterpiece Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime figure released in Japan a few years ago was also magenta-ish, but the Hard Hero bust was a closer match to the colors: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/File:HardHero_HotRod_bust.JPG

The audio on the US BD is crap, they turned the bass way up so that it overwhelms all other sounds.  I had to turn off my subwoofer to watch it.

The audio on the Dutch BD is regular DTS and Dolby Digital only, but it sounds serviceable.  Not sure about the international theatrical cut in the JP BD set, I still need to watch it. But I assume the it's the same as the US BD since the JP set is also from Warner. At this point I'd probably just want to watch it with the Dolby Surround from the LD anyway.

There's some discussion of the Dutch BD here: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1234653/die-unendliche-geschichte-aka-the-neverending-story-comparison-pix

Thank you for this info, is the LFE the only thing wrong? if so this can be fixed, but as much as I really like HD audio if it sucks then it sucks, I will not use it, but as I said if the LFE is the only problem this is an easy fix.

Thanks again

The DTS-MA might be OK without the LFE, I seem to remember a lot of overpowering bass even with my subwoofer off though.  But I haven't watched the US BD since it came out and I'm not the best judge of sound mix quality, so you might want to get a more knowledgeable opinion.

Is there any chance their will ever be a region A release by Sony of the blu ray?  The Sony video line went  bye bye even before they released their versions of the G1 cartoons.

Apparently Shout Factory cannot release a DVD or Blu ray because Sony won't lease it to them.

Either that or Paramount who makes the films won't let them.

That's the rumor I heard.  Apparently Paramount and/or Michael Bay doesn't want it interfering with the marketing of their shitty live action movies (that I actually enjoy on some level, but not at the expense of the original stuff).  Just like JJ with Star Trek.

Are the tracks in this thread available for download somewhere? There's quite a few I'd like to check out. Some I already have on LD already, but the synching can be quite a pain.

No not available but if you ask the person who synced the track, they maybe able to help you Buster

Thank you for the reply.  I also sent you a PM.  Hopefully I can be of help as well.

Adding grain to video?
Time

I've heard about AVIsynth filters like GrainFactory that add grain to video.  I was thinking about using these for watching heavily grain filtered Blu-rays and maybe for when watching upscaled DVDs to create the illusion of higher resolution.

Anyone have experience in using these?  Tried Googling but didn't find much information on what settings to use.

I'm mainly looking for something that can simulate 35mm grain and for something that can be used in realtime.

I just remembered that the Japanese dub has the narrator translating the Star Wars-ish scroll that replaced the opening credits in some versions.  Using the JP dub audio with the English opening credits might work OK, but I wonder if it would be possible to do seamless branching and include an upscale of the scroll as well.  I guess it won't be easy, as I believe there was similar discussion of including the "Episode IV: A New Hope" version of the Star Wars scroll in Harmy's Despecialized Edition, and IIRC the consensus was that it would be too hard.  Might be nice as an extra, though.

I got mine last year from http://www.dvdoutlet.nl/nl/neverending-story-the-blu-ray-8715664055045.html

It was about 12 Euros shipped to the US, looks like the price has gone up since then, or maybe they just removed the VAT when I ordered.

Edit: It seems that the price has definitely gone up as my order e-mail specifically mentions that €1.91 tax was part of the 6.99 price.  (I thought it was illegal in most places to add tax to orders shipped outside of a country, but whatever.)

Maybe they know it's better than the US BD and is now probably OOP, so get it while you can.

An Oppo 93 and above will output 1080p24 from 720p24 mkv, however it won't output DTS-HD (just the core if you are lucky).  However, if you convert the mkv to Bluray structure (as BDMV folder on USB drive or burned to Bluray disc) an Oppo 93 will play it back just fine in full resolution.

You are probably going to tell me next that you have an Oppo 83.

An Oppo 80, actually.  But thanks anyways.  I plan on building a new desktop PC eventually, so I guess I'll just make my own 1080p24 upscale.  Although one made directly from Harmy's 720p24 master instead of the compressed encode would probably look better.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Thanks for the tips, but my laptop doesn't have HDMI, so I can't get DTS-MA or LPCM 5.1 no matter what codecs I have.

My projector will of course accept 1080i, but that still results in pulldown judder. My girlfriend's 120hz Sony TV will remove judder from 60hz progressive sources, but she doesn't have an AVR or anything, just the TV speakers.

What players will output 1080p24 from 720p24? Probably won't bother getting another one (already have an Oppo, a PS3, a Panasonic 3D player, and two Blu-ray recorders), but I'm curious if this feature really works.
