Watched this last night and loved it. My only concern, not a complaint, is the audio. My system is far from the best, but still a damn decent setup. Some of the early scenes were so bass heavy that they seemed to be be recorded with way too much gain resulting in clipping. It honestly was overbearing and muddy sounding. Again, not that big of a deal, just wondering what some of yalls opinions are.

I assume you are talking about the first track? That is one for one copy of the laserdisc soundtrack. The reason why it is interesting and so bass heavy is because it was the track that was going to be used for a Sensurround release before Fox switch Alien over to Dolby SVA/70mm.

The rumor (from Disclord-RIP) goes that when Fox was remastering Alien in '95, it was the first time the movie would come with a AC-3/5.1 soundtrack on home video. After looking through the archives they found this track. Unfortunately or fortunately the track was a early test for the Sensurround format. So not only was it an early track with many small dialogue and sound effect changes but it was also super bass heavy for the Sensurround (I’m simplify this a bit). The track was so bass heavy that when the '99 DVD rolled around many people and reviews were disappoint in the lack of bass (the 99 track is another story).

So it is meant to be very, very bass heavy. The other two tracks should have more normal levels of bass and closer to what was heard in the theaters with all the final sound refinements.

Thanks for that info PDB!

Just to clear up up a bit cinfusion for me, am I assuming correctly that the BD has the deleted scenes in an “extras” section and by doing this, you are able to insert those scenes where ever you please into the main film and then burn a new disc resulting your very own extended cut SE film?

If you own the Blurays you would not need to ask this question and you probably shouldn’t be until you do own them.

Watched both 1 and 2 last night from my GF’s collection and now realize how stupid my initial question was.

I am really enjoting reading this thread. Ive learned so much since finding this community. The unfortunate, and perhaps serendipitous at times, thing for me is that Im color blind. I can see the blatent anomalies, but the subtle nuances y’all mention often, I just cant see. My one question is, Isnt it hard for all of us around the world to be completely unbiased seeing as that each of our monitors vary in quality and calibration?

I know what you mean, and to be honest, I really dont know which versions I own. I have several versions of the first 2. Im fairly new to the preservation community and have to do a lot of reading and guessing without asking a million questions. Until I stumbled on this community, I admittedly was very naive to the shortcomings that the releases the studios gave us were so crappy. I alsways assumed they gave us the very best. Boy was I wrong. My eyes have been opened. With that said, I am aware of the ettiquette of this community. So Im guessing the answer to my question is, “yes.” Along with what I have, my GF has a fairly extensive colletion of LD titles as well. Ill ask her what she has, and check my own.

I listened to Despecialized, and the echo is on the 5.1 recreation, the Stereo recreation, and the both of the laserdisc mixes.

Notably, it is not on the mono mix, which as I understand is what the special edition based most of its sounds on.

EDIT: As for what SSE used, if it’s similar to the 1.0 release, it uses the '93 laserdisc, best as I can tell.

I remember a mention in a thread somewhere around here that addressed this particular mix. The 2011 BD didnt have the distinct echo delay, but the GOUT does. I more or less wondering, what is the real mix and when was it changed?

I just previewed a bit of the TN1 v 1.6 and was wondering what audio track they used? The reason I ask is I noticed a scene which I havent heard in many years. The chasm scene and the echoes of Luke and Leia. I know this has been mentioned in other threads, but I have no idea where, so I thought Id ask here. Is the delayed, extreme echo version what was in the theatres or was it a TV thing? I just cant remember. But I do distinctly remember hearing it many years ago and then noticing when it was changed.

Every movie you see that says Dolby Stereo has 4 channel matrixed surround sound. The simplified home version of the decoder was called Dolby Surround and only extracted the surround channel from the existing 4 channel matrixed surround. It is a simple matter to generate an LFE to go with it. The 70 mm 6 track was comprised of left, center, right, surround and two LFE channels. Before Dolby Stereo, you either had optical mono soundtracks or magnetic 6 track (there were some older formats that were 4 track). But there was only one surround channel. The two extra tracks were either mid right and mid left or LFE. 5 front channels kind of made sense with some of the very wide format movies presented on very large screens.

The 1985 and 1993 mixes should be matrixed as well. Some of the later matrixed surround contains 2 surround channels. Dolby Surround equipment can extract 1 surround channel. Dolby ProLogic can extract 1 surround channel and the center. Dolby ProLogic II can extract 2 surround channels and the center. There have to be 2 surround channels to extract or it will just duplicate the single surround channel. LFE is usually mixed with the surround and cut off between 80 and 120 hz. The LFE channel isn’t necessary as most systems will direct the low bass sounds to the subwoofer and filter them out of the surround channels.

The original 77 Dolby Stereo was included in video releases before 1985, including multiple LD releases. I am currently working on a way to extract the original multi channel audio from the stereo source. If it works I should be able to create a 4.1 channel AC3 or DTS file for the original audio. From my first attempt with the 1985 soundtrack, I think I can extract a full 5.1 channels from it and the 1993 soundtrack.

Maybe a dumb question here, but what do those different tracks translate to on a contemporary Theatre Processor? What setting would I use for Dolby Stereo? What setting for a 70mm 6-ch mix? I know they wont be perfect, but along with the visual, I want the audio to match as close as possible to a 77’ viewing experience.

That would be the optical soundtrack from the print, or optical track, containing the Dolby Stereo 2-track mix. The audio has some subtle background pops and scratches but it doesn’t overpower the sound mix. These anomalies are what audiences in the theatre watching the film would have heard at the time of the showings. The optical track audio would be in sync with the video because it came from the print. That audio track should have came with ISO file. On the spleen, that audio is the only audio on the ISO file.

Ok, Thanks. I actually found another version and tried it just to see if it was in sync. It too was about 3 frames off, but after adjusting it, All was well. Kind of odd that it stayed true throughout. I wouldve thought with the later missing clips it would jumped off sync a bit as the movie ran, but it didnt. It was a 2 ch only version. I found the GOUT versions on spleen and will give them a try as well.

Thanks dude. Now I get it. Didnt even think about that. I did notice some missing frames as I was watching different clips. Just assumed the audio followed suit.
Ive asked this before, but for clarification sakes, which audio track best represents how an average theatre in 1980-1981 wouldve shown Empire?

Oh. I see, you downloaded a re-encode someone did to GOUT sync it, meaning synced with other audio files like those from Despecialized. From the sound of it they botched it. You need to search the Spleen for the first, official TN1 Blu-ray ISO. It should only have ONE audio track, but it will be in sync.

Thanks, Ill give it a look see. I did manage to correct the sync issue. I had to slide the audio by 2 frames to get it in sync. Id rather have the ISO though. Why is it that everyone talks about GOUT symcing? Is it just the best audio track thats available of the original? I dont think its available on mySpleen anymore. Hows it listed?

The audio should not be out of sync, and yes, it was a scan with limited color correction. This is most noticeably a problem in the first scene with Darth Vader on the Star Destroyer while the “Imperial March” plays like 15 minutes into the movie. The picture keeps fading to pink and back out again.

I do like the look of it, but why is it so dark? Was there not enough of a light source when it was scanned, or is that just the nature of the particular print and the age of it? Being color blind I dont notice subtle nuances of changes in color, but I do notice that there is a certain hue or tint throughout. From what Ive read, its becoming a bit scarce out there to find. Im guessing the DVD5 version is 480p and probably doesnt look too hot.
As far as the audio, it looks to be about a half frame off. I wonder if I can import it into Premeire and move the audio track a hair to correct it. Any other ideas on why its off? The file plays off as well as the BD I burned. The version I have has 9 audio tracks with the last 3 being Lucas and one other commentary. It also has the Portugese track. Regardless, its really cool to see the film grain and the rawness of the film.

So I dont have to read 60 pages of this thread and do Google searches out the ass, can someone clear up a few things for me concerning this preservation?

1: I have the AVCHD version, is the audio purposely out of sync?
2: Is the PQ purposely very contrasty and dark to emulate old grindhouse movies? Or, is this just a straight scan of the print with minor color correction?

Ive had this for a while and just now got around to wanting to burn it to BD. Quite frankly, I dont know how to do it off the top of my head. The version I have is AVCHD and contains multiple folders of the same thing, so to speak. Some of the files are MKV 1kb files that play the whole movie when you click on it. One folder contains the AVCHD 22GB file. Im gonna fool around with it and read online the best way to do it, but I sure would a ppreciate a helping hand. Not a tutorial, just what avenue I should take. I can figure it out from there.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out.

Where did you shoot your pic for the Overlook? Also, the sandcrawler shot as well? There really was no big hill like portrayed in the movie for the Jawas to walk up. It was all small hills and whatnot. I had to really work to make the shot look right.

Great pics. You had a much clearer day than when I was there. It was very hazy while I was there. I had intended on taking some figures for fun, but just didnt get around to it. I plan on going next summer for a more extended stay and hopefully Ill take a few then.😃
