Truer words…
I just know “Whills” from the 1976 Star Wars novelization. I think the intro was “from the Journal of Whills” or something like that.
Right. I knew that it existed as a thing in some early drafts of the screenplay. I knew that much and was content.
What in the hell is a Whill?
There was that scene with the rathtars and the smugglers confronting Han in TFA.
Perhaps the worst scene/series of scenes in TFA.
I’m not even sure what to do with that post.
What? I noticed you liked and have gone to the mat multiple times on here for TFA while also being a pretty hardcore OT guy. That’s interesting to me and I wondered if you spelled out why oh why you liked TFA so much. I…didn’t?
I will never understand the attitude that a new movie can ruin an older movie. I will see this once, and if it sucks, I’ll never see it again, and it won’t affect my opinion of the OT or TFA one bit.
Frink, is there a post someplace on this site where you “defend” TFA? I’d genuinely love to read that. Because whereas I enjoyed TFA, I didn’t and don’t need it. And it is only kinda half in my head-canon for what “counts” at the end of the day. The Last Jedi is going to bump it either all the way in or all the way out. I refuse to see any of these Anthology things going forward. RO was a piece of garbage.
R1 being “saved” is up for debate as we’ll likely never see that alternate footage.
Yeah, reasonable people may disagree as to whether the final by-creative-committee film was any good, box office returns aside. The Transformers movies make great box office…
In “The Blues Brothers”, replace the “Rawhide” performance in the roadhouse with “Jedi Rocks.”
I think it would have to be the Faces and 97 SE tapes, the Power of the Force action figures, the Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight and Rogue Squadron video games, the Decipher Star Wars CCG cards, and whatever Bantam EU books I could snag at the grocery store. A very 90s Star Wars.
Pretty much me too! Twas a totally 90s experience. (A part of me would almost pay a stupid amount of money for a set of those CCG cards for pure nostalgia’s sake alone.) Though I’d add on to my list the first Dark Forces game, the WEG RPG, and the old “Essential Guides” which my little brother and I read like quasi-religious texts…
And I’ll never ever forget the first time I sat and watched the OT at a sleepover at my buddy Jordan’s house on his dad’s “Faces” tapes. Wide-eyed and mesmerized.
Let’s replace the flying monkeys with CGI flying monkeys but like mid-1990s CGI so that they instantly look like something out of a computer game.
But they’re CGI and not old rubbery makeup so they’re Cooler n’ More Realistic n’ Stuff!
LOTS of the Old EU was silly fan fic. But not all of it, in my opinion anyway.
And even with that caveat, thanks to the glories of the Corporate Story Team™ we now get this ridiculousness on “Rebels” - a show that features childish slapstick that makes the Prequel antics of R2 and 3PO look like commedia dell’arte.
Not that I NEEDED more reason to hate the silly, mediocre fan-fic that is the nuEU but Darth Maul not being dead after being cut in half and falling down a pit into God-knows-what certainly clinches the matter for me…
Luke being the main protagonist didn’t stop Leia and Han from having a significant emotional impact in Empire…
Well, right, because Empire is a significantly better movie than Return of the Jedi. ROTJ is the weak link, sure, but it isn’t the dumpster fire this guy wants to make it out to be. We have three dumpster fires in the Star Wars canon and none of them involve Ewoks.
They were of no emotional significance though.
THIS
just because a character is doing something does not mean that they are significant to the emotional story of the film
You didn’t mention “the emotional story of the film”, you mentioned “making a difference” and plot-wise - they did.
Look, iS ROTJ a Eugene O’Neill play? No, it is not. Is it a fun space fantasy adventure with some silly and stupid bits? Yes.
Also, I’d say that Han and Leia DID have an emotional arc (their relationship) and Leia had a minor one with Luke too (them being sibs). Was any of this as big an emotional arc as Luke’s? No. But, then, Luke is the PROTAGONIST.
It was the movie that firmly established that jedi were the only characters who make any real difference…han and leia had zero stake or importance in the story and you can cut then out if you want…this trend of “jedi first, everyone last” infected star wars media to a ridiculous degree
Han and Leia (et al) took down the Death Star’s shields so that Lando and Wedge (also, non-Jedi…) could then blow up said Death Star which (even if Luke had totally failed) would have killed the Emperor…But, no, you’re right.
Gorgeous stuff! I’d love a copy of the PDFs.
Last jedi can’t be any worse than return of the jedi
A film liked because of the 80s and not so much quality
Last Jedi can’t be any worse than ROTJ? Really?
I’ve got three other movies to show you. The first one stars the kid from “Jingle All the Way.”
Cushing’s estate gave their blessing.
I know. Still feels just a tad ghoulish to me.
But, yeah, 100% ignore this thread. I’m an idiot.
(Is there a delete option? You know, for stupid people. Like, um, me.)
Yeah, I saw that. But he’s shipping from Europe (and I’m in the good ol’ US of A) which is gonna be pricey.
Yeah, Frink, I think this is a taste thing more than a “this is objectively right or wrong” thing. But the way I see it, you could have removed Vader from the film entirely and had Tarkin fill both roles (Krennic’s boss and the guy who Krennic is trying to one-up) or the other way 'round. It was an unnecessary complication to my mind to have both of 'em - and no doubt done to appeal to the fanbase. (Just one man’s opinion.)
My Tarkin-related storytelling complaint is that Tarkin + Vader + Krennic is (at least) one main villain too many. It is narrative bloat for the sake of fan service. (Spider-man 3-esque) This might just be a taste thing but I prefer a more efficient sort of storytelling than that.
Does anyone make OT slipcovers for cash? I’m the least handy human being on earth and if I try to make my own I. Will. Fail.
Help?
I’ll stop being negative when
A. the nuEU stops churning out sub-par fan-fiction
B. I die
Whichever comes first.
Hey, c’mon man, it ain’t just sub-par fan-fiction - it is market-tested, focus-group approved sub-par fan-fiction!
Did you see Tarkin in R1? They’ve come a long way. I bet they could make a very convincing Jabba now.
Yes, I did see Tarkin in R1. And it was the moment when I stopped caring about that movie and very nearly gave up on the new continuity. Bad storytelling decision, awful CGI, disrespectful as hell to Peter Cushing.
