JSC all-the-way

Don't underestimate the power of the Pyramid Coffret... (^^,)

It could be improved a lot from its "rough" original state
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/126000
but it's still not better than GOUT

Ah, sorry, I meant just for NTSC.

The biggest actual issue with the JSC is that it was simply too sharp for 1986 LD mastering/production technology.  It has a high color bandwidth but was done before SuperNTSC, so it is very hard to get rid of all the rainbowing, and the sharpness comes with noise.

But there's a lot in there, if it can all be dug out cleanly.

Can you make a JSC-specific branch of ld-decode? I wonder how much we can pull from it cleanly...

That 1989 'Special Widescreen Edition' Laserdisc set had that ridiculous Shrinking Aspect Ratio problem, which I believe was quietly corrected in 1992/93 and released with the same artwork and stuff. Isn't that fixed 1992/93 set considered the best American/NTSC set? Even better than the DC?

I also see the 1986 Japan widescreen set mentioned a ton as the definitive release of the OOT. But, from a restoration/upscale point, we then have to contend with Japanese subtitles.

I'd love to read that entire thread, but there is a ton there. One day. :P

1. The non-shrinking-aspect-ratio '92/93 "Special Widescreen Edition" release was pressed by Technidisc. It suffers from all of the typical issues present in Technidisc pressings of the era; e.g., crosstalk and terrible chroma noise (even for LD!). Also, FWIW, it was sourced from a dirty-as-hell print.

2. The JSC has Japanese subtitles, but they're in the black bars, so it's not an issue.

I thought I remember hearing the laserdiscs for SW and ESB still have aliasing due to noise reduction pass used at the time of authoring?  And that the Japanese discs didn't have this?  I forget.  Anyways, yeah, ask "Laserdisc Master".  [job title of the year]

Aliasing is so bad with scope films on LD because said films were usually scanned flat with the same (e.g., flying spot) scanners used for other non-scope films. The choice was made to drop half the scanlines rather than do the 2:1 anamorphic stretch (like with an anamorphic lens) since doing the latter would require LD companies to use a whole different machine specifically for scope films.

Dropping half of the scanlines allowed them to use one machine for all transfers, so it was the cheap and easy route.

The vertical blur on consumer CRTs made this a non-issue for the time.

But still... Yuck!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away......a site was created to secure the preservation of a film that impacted the world and changed the face of cinema. Then you people came along.

Interestingly, this website started with the simple goal of getting Star Wars on DVD. That's it. Nobody knew what would happen in 2004. :-(

I've been getting the blue screen of death at least once a day for the last week or so. Hopefully I can figure out what's going on soon, because it's getting incredibly frustrating. I've already checked for viruses, and that's a negative. Right now I'm running on safe mode, and hopefully that'll help me narrow things down.

What about 3rd party device drivers?

I was very fortunate, I suppose, to have seen SotS as a kid in '87. :P

I managed to find a copy online to watch a couple months ago. The quality wasn't HD or anything, but it was serviceable. I honestly found it a beautiful movie; those who call it racist are either overtly-sensitive members of the PC police or haven't even seen the movie in the first place.

Damn straight. We don't need no stinkin' SJWs!

It pisses me off when people take their criticisms off-site because it's such a fucking cowardly thing to do since it allows you to pretend you're on the moral high-ground as a spectator, but makes it difficult for the people you're criticizing to defend themselves or even figure out that they need to defend themselves.

FWIW, I'll share this post with this individual so that he has the opportunity to defend himself here. I don't want to be a hypocrite.

Anyway, if you must go down the SR route, then I suggest AAing afterward. The goal is to recover as much temporal data as possible and THEN AA. EEDI2().TurnLeft().EEDI2().TurnRight() usually yields fantastic results, but I haven't kept up with the latest Sangnom2, etc. developments.

If you're willing to go all-the-way, then I'd suggest SRing and only AAing shots with annoying visible aliasing. Aliasing is always present, but it's not always easy to see. AAing only the most painful parts is a good compromise.

Also, get your hands on a really good SR algorithm. The one that comes with TheFoundry's FURNACE for NukeX (F_SmartZoom) is fantastic.
