4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I’ve always said this, but if Disney were smart, they would release a complete De-specialized OOT, as well as a middle ground release with vfx upgrades, but no altered dialogue or scenes. That is undoubtedly the product the public wants the most: the original movie, except corrections for visual effects that have become dated and don’t look real anymore.

Since you have to start with the OOT to get to the other, and the OOT needs to be preserved for historical purposes, it just makes sense to release both along with a new release of the SEs for people who would prefer to watch those.

Was it ever established in the OT that Vader was a genocidal psychopath like Hitler?

Why were the rebels rebelling? Maybe they didn’t like Vader and the Emperor’s tax plans?

Other than the fact that he betrayed and murdered the other Jedi, killed untold numbers of his men onscreen–who knows how many died in the asteroid field-- I guess there is some room for interpretation, but I think it’s pretty clear he’s a really really bad dude.

Jake Lloyd as Baby Hitler

What.

Vader is a genocidal psychopath who has killed untold numbers of people beings. He’s a horrible person, he’s the main villain in two films, and his redemption in the last film is seen by the audience through Luke’s eyes. We are happy for Luke a million times more than we are happy for his father.

But if you come at the story from Episode 1-3 first, those fans seem to see everything through Anakin’s perspective. Most or all of those fans like Star Wars and Empire the least in the entire series, because it’s when their little baby is doing things they don’t like him doing. They can’t wait to get back to his redemption. They aren’t happy for Luke at the end of Jedi, they are happy for the guy in the black mask.

It’s a completely different story. One that I would argue is patently false and insincere, by the way.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Try muxing to an m2ts instead (tsMuxer is the easy option here). But be warned, it’ll be sluggish as heck - Premiere doesn’t handle h.264 all that well. You’d be better off converting to lossless (e.g. Lagarith) for anything serious.

towne32 said:

That or just demux it using tsmuxer.

It depends entirely on your system, but you’re right that it doesn’t handle it nearly as well as a lossless file. H264 isn’t too terrible in Premiere if it’s only 720p, at least for me.

OK I have tsmuxer and MKVExtractGUI and MKVToolnixGUI. I imported MKVExtractGUI into Toolnix and used it to extract the MKV file of Empire Despecialized. Am I on the right path so far and what steps do I take next?

Thanks again for your help guys!

In my conversations with the prequel fans over the years, and maybe people who just prefer to watch all of the films regardless of their quality, they seem much more interested in Anakin’s story, not Luke’s. Many of them don’t even think of Anakin as Vader. They think he’s a good guy.

So yeah I do think that is completely different than the story the OT was trying to tell.

Well maybe I’m wrong, but for me there is a distinct prequel connotation with that word. I remember the emphasis being on the word “trilogy” before the prequels came along. Then when you had to buy all six films together, the word “saga” became ubiquitous.

It’s even worse because brainwashing people into watching 1-6 in order completely changes the story that the original trilogy was trying to tell.

Who is CPY?

I think the idea was that Yoda and the Emperor were so powerful in the force that they were beyond the need of something like a lightsaber. Yoda told Luke “your weapons, you will not need them” when he entered the cave. And the Emperor mocked Luke’s weapon like it was some kind of toy in the throne room scene on Death Star 2.

Plus there was just the whole idea of Yoda being a wise and revered spiritual leader. It’s never a good idea to see someone whose face was partially designed from the wrinkles of Einstein to be seen spinning around and jumping off walls and twirling glowsticks around.

For me anyway, I had been a lifelong Star Wars fan for 20 years, but that was the point I stopped watching the movie and said to myself “this isn’t Star Wars anymore”.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?
Time

I’m making my own custon set right now and so far I finished Star Wars with only the following SE changes:

  1. Alderaan explosion
  2. X-wing shots taking off from Yavin 4
  3. X-wing shots during the battle
  4. Death Star explosion
  5. Cut-outs replaced with actors during the award ceremony

I’m working on Empire right now and this is what I’ve got through the first third of the film:

  1. Han’s tauntaun riding into the base
  2. Some of the speeder shots when they are looking for Han and Luke
  3. First transport when it takes off at the beginning of the battle
  4. Speeder shots at the start of the battle
  5. Walker explosion
  6. Shield generator explosion
  7. Wide shot of various ships preparing for takeoff right before Luke departs Hoth

Basically anything where the vfx of existing shots can be upgraded, I’m all for it. Just no new additions and wherever the vfx still look good I’m ok with leaving them in.

Should go without saying that additional scenes or radical changes are completely verboten.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) Edited (* unfinished project *)
Time

Complete list of changes for Act I:

-Most of the opening credits were cut and moved to the end of the film.

-I rearranged several shots during the sequence in and around Julio’s birth:

  1. The shot where Karl is standing alone was recut and sped up very slightly to fit the timeline
  2. The title card introducing the Frenchman Marcelo was slowed down. It wasn’t readable before
  3. The shot of Marcelo taking the swaddling cloth was slowed down to fit the timeline
  4. Cut to: closeup of Marcelo was inserted to improve the flow of the sequence
  5. “I need one of my own breed” title card was slowed down. It wasn’t readable before
  6. The closeup of Marcelo was cut from this part and inserted into the earlier part I mentioned

I’m not sure if that list is exhaustive or not. I did quite a few rearrangements during that sequence.

-The title card and music introducing the Boca quarter of Buenos Aires was cut. I feel like all of that pointlessly slowed down the film and preferred an immediate cut to the famous tango sequence.

-The title card introducing Luisa, Madariaga’s elder daughter and Julio’s mom, was slowed down. It wasn’t readable before.
-The shot of her that immediately follows was recut, in order to fit the timeline.

-The next shot of Chichi dancing was also recut for the same reason.

-The title card for Madariaga’s will was slowed down to make it readable. As you can see, some title cards in the TCM presentation just barely flashed on screen.

-The following shot of the family was recut to fit the timeline.

Some of these edits were technical fixes to the poor title card presentations done by TCM, but the ones I worked on the most focused on improving the flow and pace of the film. Especially for a modern audience trying to watch a silent picture, I thought it was really important to not test anyone’s attention span, and get into the movie as fast as possible. That’s why I cut the interminably long opening credits and moved them to the back of the film. The Boca quarter title card was just another unnecessary stoppage that slowed the film down in its tracks, and I think it’s an improvement to keep the dramatic narrative going in the way that I did.

Unquestionably the most novel edits I created were those in the sequence surrounding Julio’s birth. I found the original cut to be quite jarring–I don’t think it flowed very well in comparison to the sequence that I recreated.

I’m currently working on the much more difficult Part 2 now.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) Edited (* unfinished project *)
Time

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a 1921 American silent war film based on Vicente Blasco Ibanez’s popular novel of the same name.

After his wealthy grandfather dies, the young tango hero Julio Desnoyers and his half-French, half-German family move back to Europe, where their lives are upended by the start of World War I.

Starring:
Rudolph Valentino
Alice Terry
Josef Swickard

Directed by:
Rex Ingram

Adapted for the screen by:
June Mathis

Produced by:
Metro Pictures Corporation

Running time:
134 minutes

Like Star Wars, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. It was the only silent film included in Martin Scorsese’s list of “85 films you need to see to know anything about film”.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is now in the public domain and can be downloaded for free on the Internet Archive, but I am working with the Turner Classic Movies restoration done by Photoplay Productions. Carl Davis composed the score.

My purpose in doing this new edit was to improve the pacing and tempo of the film in order to make it more accessible to modern audiences. Some scenes needed to be cut in order to accomplish that more dynamic feel. In addition, while the quality of filmmaking was exceptionally high, there were a few scenes where I felt dramatic cues were missed, and sequences in which shots didn’t flow quite right, so I wanted to fix those as well.

I’d like to get into film editing, and hope to use this as a demo in the future.

Here is my edited upload of Act I:

Info: Harmy's Despecialized Intro Blocked By Fox
Time

It’s a documentary uploaded by Harmy, about 20 minutes long that goes into detail about the work and the sources used to create Despecialized. It’s been on Youtube for almost two years and had almost a million views. There are already several threads about it.

The 20 minute video itself was an amazing watch and kind of a work of art in its own right.

Are The Prequels That Bad?
Time

Just one more post on the Walkers. Take a minute and think of the different approach to making the films everyone took on Empire compared to Rogue One. The people making Empire did actual research to find something visually compelling but that would actually work tactically in that kind of environment. It’s clear they put a lot of thought into the entire thing.

The people making Rogue One, on the other hand, were just like: “yeah, everyone loved those things and they look cool, so let’s put them in the movie”.

Rogue Zero - What was changed, reshot, etc in Rogue One?
Time

I saw it once like 15 years ago, but I think we should limit this to examples of good films.

Imagine if The Lord of the Rings had spent Act I introducing us to every character, for example. First we get the hobbits, then we cut to some scenes with the elves, then cut to some other unrelated scenes with the dwarves…meanwhile nothing has happened in the entire movie yet, but just wait, it’s going to all come together later!

Artoo says the chances of survival…

Yeah, I did think of that after I posted it. Still, it was apparently a running gag that Kasdan put into the script for one film. Neither 3PO or R2 mention anything about odds in the rest of the films, so this would be a good example of R1 ripping off the script from Empire.

Also, the Walkers in R1 are stupid for the reason RLM pointed out. One difference between Empire and R1 is that in Empire, the people making the movie were going balls to the wall to make it look like a realistic, futuristic battle. Sure, they wanted it to look good, but only so far as it looked real.

In R1, on the other hand, there was quite obviously zero attempt to make Scarif look like a real battle. It was conceived in much more of a comic book superhero universe kind of way.

“LOOK GUYS IT’S JIMMY SMITS JUST STANDING THERE BUT AT LEAST HE WAS IN THAT ONE OTHER MOVIE”

Or you know, Princess Leia’s father, the guy who she states in SW sent her on her mission to begin with. Sounds like someone that would definitely show up in A PREQUEL TO SW

I said in my review that he’s supposed to be in the film. I like him being in the film. Unlike other appearances that felt out of place, he and Mon Mothma were appropriate and should have had larger roles. My complaint was that he wasn’t given anything to do except stand around and just be there. A potentially excellent character was relegated to fanservice duty.

“LOOK GUYS IT’S IMPERIAL WALKERS JUST BLOWING UP THEIR OWN BASE FOR NO GOOD REASON”

When are they ever depicted destroying their own buildings? They’re taking shots at enemy troops.

Plinkett nailed this in one of his recent videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9-vP7kJheI

“The use of AT-ATs was purely fanservice, because when your own base has been infiltrated by rebels, you don’t use a scorched-earth, non-precision tac vehicle to attack them. You’re going to blow up you’re own ****. Who is their military tactician, Ray Charles?”

“LOOK GUYS IT’S A DROID TELLING US ABOUT THE ODDS AGAIN”

Yeah, that’s what droids do.

Says who? R2 and BB8 don’t tell people the odds. “Come on Red” didn’t tell Luke or Uncle Owen the odds about anything before he blew his bad motivator. That one droid in the Jawa crawler didn’t tell anyone the odds about anything. There was that little droid on the Death Star that just ran away from Chewie.

Yeah, you might want to rethink this idea you had.

“LOOK GUYS THERE’S A SHOT THAT LOOKS ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE ONE FROM DAGOBAH”

No one has any idea what you’re talking about here.

It was a shot of the ship in the rain on Eadu or whatever it’s called.
