Zombie Games?

I have a bud (Porkins and The Came From Behinds guy) who claims to only play zombie games.  I tried to get him to try Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and it didn't occur to me to tell him it was a zombie game.

It got me thinking... there are a ton of zombies in games you don't think of as zombie games!

Halo Series
Half Life Series
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Trilogy
Spider-Man Web of Shadows
Puzzlequest!
Monkey Island Series
Too Human
Call of Duty World at War

Etc...

Update:

Minecraft
DarkSiders
Deadly Premonition
Mass Effect
Fable (2)
Tomb Raider Series
Castlevania
Epic Mickey

LEFT 4 DEAD!!!!1

Oh, guess that one is kind of obviously a zombie game, isn't it?

You can add Oblivion to your list, it has zombies. Fallout 3 also has its "zombies". Even a mission called, "You have to shoot them in the head" referencing the classic method for killing zombies.

Kind of funny to see Half-Life on that list, since the zombies were one of the most striking things about the first game (which was intented to be a horror game); but now when most people think of Half-Life, they think about Half-Life 2, which left its horror roots behind and became more of a sci-fi action game. With the exception of Ravenholm, the zombies play a much smaller role in that game and its expansions.

For anyone who has somehow not played the original Half-Life, I'd like to take this moment to highly recommend it. If you can get over the 10 year old graphics (can't believe it has been that long ago!) then you are in for a really enjoyable experience. As much as I love HL2, I can't compare it to the greatness of the first one.

Those "zombies" on Zelda use to really freak me out. Not because they look scary, but because of the whole atmosphere around them, they way they'd shriek, come at you in slow motion, jump on you, and start humping you.

Left 4 Dead, House of the Dead, Dead Rising, Resident Evil, and, to some degree, Dead Space are all marketed as zombie games.  I meant to list them for completeness, but I was more interested in the games not really marketed as such but feature Satan's Unholy Army anyways.

It made me think: This doesn't seem to happen in movies.  Either it's a zombie movie and it has zombies in it... or it isn't and it doesn't.  Can anyone prove that wrong?

And RE: Half Life 1 vs 2.  I never thought that there was much of a genre shift between Half Life and its sequels.  Rahter that there were genre shifts within each Half Life game.  You go through puzzle sequences, sneaking past alien monster sequences, vehicle sequences, shooting monster sequences, shooting army guy sequnces,  sneaking past army helicopter sequences, etc thoughout each of the games.  I also don't recall HL1 being any scarier than HL2.  The scariest part of all of the games to me were the rattlesnake-head crabs in HL2.  In the first game, the thing that freaked me out the most was the moment when you're crawling through the air ducts over a room full of electrified water and head crabs... and then the duct breaks and it dumps you down into the room.

All of that being said... do go back and play Half Life if you haven't played it.  I played it a couple years ago with an HD mod that increased the poly count on the character models and replaced the ingame textures with high poly versions.  I heard once that they had made a Source engine remake, but that they weren't releasing it.  Maybe you can find a copy of that and enjoy the updated visuals, sounds and physics that way?

You can actually buy Half-Life Source over steam. Though I don't think the graphics are much improved over the high definition pack that was released with the Blueshift expansion. The Playstation 2 version has the best graphics out of the versions I have played. So for anyone with a PS2 lying around (or a backwards compatible PS3) they really have no excuse for not running out to Gamestop and picking up a copy for $10 (unless they just don't want to, which is a pretty good excuse).

Black Mesa does look awesome.  Here's to hoping it comes out in my lifetime...

I'm still waiting on the Jedi Academy -> Dark Forces mod.  I played through the first half or so that they released and thoroughly enjoyed it... but where's the 2nd half?!?!?

UPDATE: At least someone was working on it as recently as a month ago...

I used to be so excited about that thing! I couldn't wait for it to come out! The release date drew nearer and nearer and my excitement grew. This thing was going to be awesome!... then the release date got moved back... then they replaced the date entirely with these horrible words: "WID", "When Its Done" or something like that. I would still check the site every few months to be greeted with no change in progress. Then I'd check it about every six months, and eventually just gave up on it.

Man, I was still in college back then, that seems like a million years ago. Glad it isn't dead, but as far as I am concerned it might as well be. I don't even know where my Jedi Academy disc is anymore, and probably wouldn't even take the time to dig it up and install it if I did.

Oh, and another game for the non-zombie zombie games list, Star Trek: Elite Force (from the makers of Jedi Knight III: Jedi Outcast) featuring heavy use of the borg, every nerds favorite non-zombie zombie. They might even be considered the first non-zombie zombies, at least I can't think of any that pre-date them.

The zombies in the Buffy game Chaos Bleeds are a bleedin annoyance (especially in the Kalkistos {sp?}level) but they do have the virtue of being easy to kick to bits most of the time and you get a health boost if you kill enough of them.

A bit late, but here is a game that had so much promise but was never made:

I went to the Black Mesa site to check in on it again.  I didn't have a lot of time, but I couldn't determine whether it had been released or not.  I didn't see anything that said it was either in progress, or a place to download anything.

Anyone know?

what of Quake?

Zombies didn't play a large role but they were challenging - iirc if you didn't blast them into chunks they'd just keep getting up again.

and the Doom series...

I poked around and no, its not ready yet. They're taking Ady's "its ready when its ready" stance. Which is a shame.

I played that for a bit. Then stopped getting the "brains" you need to progress to the next level, tempting me to BUY them with real money as you can't use the in-game money to buy what you need. Screw that.

And the fact that you have to harvest most crops after a certain period of real time, whether the game is running or not. There was a week or two where I was basing my schedule around my single-player iPhone game with no leaderboard or anything. So I deleted it.

Hi everyone,

Who doesn't love a good zombie game every once in a while? Be it realistic or unrealistic, scary or comical, the truth remains that the average zombie game has seen a significant rise in popularity online.

I love horror movies and I also like to play online zombie games. My favorite online zombie games which are free to play are Zombie in the shadow 20, Ricochet Kills 3, S A S zombie assault on Bgames.com.
