UEFA Euro 2012

A bit late seeing as it's already a week into the tournament...

So Ireland were the first team to be knocked out, after they got thrashed 4-0 by Spain last night.

Holland's progress to the quarter-finals after two losses now depends on them beating Portugal and Germany beating Denmark.

From an English point of view, it seems to me that there is a lot less expectation on England to do well this time than there has been in previous Euro and World Cup competitions. May fans have now accepted that we are no longer in the "top tier" of international football and are second class when compared with Spain, Germany, Brazil, etc.

However, as Denmark and Greece have shown in Euro 92 and 04, with this format of only 16 teams any team can win. Once you're out of the group stage you're straight into the quarter finals...

What a night last night.

Firstly the France-Ukraine game and the thunderstorm - I can't ever remember a game being suspended because of weather before. Some good photos here.

And then another first - England beat Sweden in a competitive match. When we were down 2-1 I was thinking back to Euro 1992, but thankfully the final outcome was different this time.

It was probably an entertaining game for a neutral fan - but only because our defence was crap.

They said that in Mexico 1986 was the last time they had to suspend the match so it was pretty rare. I wished that the rain wasn't so hard as it would've been more cool to watch it with all the lightnings, reminded me of the last UEFA tournament when there was a storm also.

England vs. Sweden was an entertaining match indeed, too bad for Sweden to drop out before its last game though.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

So England topped their group - who'd have thought before the tournament that would be the case?

And sorry Harmy, but the Czechs were disappointing last night - 2 shots in the whole game and neither on target?

I know as much about Football as Manuel off Farty Towels knew about Basil's betting activities but I occasionally notice the players for openly disclosed reasons and I couldn't help but notice that Xabi Alonso is turning into Jayne Cobb.

Which has to be a good thing.

Any streakers this year?

It means "Fixed That For You".
