Hot Topic used to be a store I would go in and buy merchandise and tshirts supporting my favorite heavy metal bands (back when I actually did this… in high school… now I usually just wear normal people clothes with the occasional band tshirt). Now it has become a place where mainly trendy teenagers go to buy Bring Me The Horizon and such shirts.

Discuss.

(And before anybody loses their shit this is honestly just in good fun and is really, truly, honestly not an attack on anybody)

Back in the ol’ Goth phase, I used to shop there a lot. So did a lot of the punks and emos and other alternative kids I knew.

Now that those are mostly dead subcultures, Hot Topic has kinda lost its identity. The band stuff and interesting vinyl is still there, but it’s mostly just generic nerd stuff beyond that.

I miss the bondage pants and spiked accessories and crazy boots and arm warmers, dammit!

I worked at Hot Topic from 2003-2004 while being an assistant manager at KB Toys (best job ever. It was like living Clerks.) in the same mall. I got to blast Misfits, The Smiths, Pixies and Ramones while at work and the rest of the crew loved the music I picked. People constantly face planted on the large windows at the front when trying to enter. I wore home t-shirts I put on to “help sell em!” without paying at least twice a week. Good times.
