The Lord of the Rings - Special Abridged Edition (Released)

 (Edited)

As I mentioned in an earlier post (about my “Phantom of the Opera” edit), I made a “Special Abridged Edition” of LOTR. My goal was to condense the whole saga – including some essential footage from the extended editions – into a single, unified and coherent three-hour movie that does not necessarily adhere to the novel (and yes, I am familiar with the novel – as well as Ralph Bakshi’s animated fiasco – and the animated “Return of the King” – and new stage version in Toronto, though I made this edit some months before that opened). So please spare me, purists. (And for those of you who are curious – I loved the stage version. By a twist of good fortune, I got to see it twice for the price of one admission. It has its flaws but it is an incredible work of theater, and it has some lovely music in it. I never thought another composer could do justice to Middle Earth after hearing Howard Shore’s soundtracks, but I was wrong.)

Mine is a minimalist approach to LOTR, so all I have is all that is essential to the central story threads. I left out the characters of Faramir and Denethor entirely, though I humorously acknowledged that fact in the end credits (and coincidentally, those two characters are not in the stage version either). I excised the most material from The Two Towers, omitting the battle of Helm’s Deep altogether.

There are moments in the various characters’ journeys when I superimposed maps showing their route (taken from the extended DVD extras) – though on retrospect, I may have overused that effect just a little.

I did include some of the new footage from the extended editions that I felt were important to the story (actually, I only used the extended editions and not the theatrical cuts as my source) – for example, more Gollum; the additional scene of Frodo, Sam and Gollum in the Dead Marshes when Gollum talks about how, once the Ring takes a hold of you, it never lets go (and in my edit, he’s interrupted by the Nazgul flying over the swamp); Pippin and Merry discovering Saruman’s storehouse of food (I used that merely as a way to transition into The Return of the King, with the two Hobbits celebrating when Gandalf and gang arrive at Isengard); a thoroughly altered version of Saruman’s parley with Gandalf; the Witchking’s confrontation with Gandalf; and Aragorn looking into the Palantir.

I completely rearranged the order of many of the scenes, especially in The Two Towers and the first half of The Return of the King. I attempted to juxtapose some scenes in such a way as to bring out the dramatic irony – for example, right after Elrond tells Aragorn to “become who you were born to be”, I cut to Gollum about to work his little scheme to get rid of Sam, “becoming who he was born to be”. I also juxtaposed Aragorn entering the Paths of the Dead with Frodo entering Shelob’s lair, and intercutting between those two tunnel scenes (amid shots of the ongoing seige of Gondor). At a later point in time, I intercut between Eowyn’s confrontation with the Witchking and Sam’s battle with Shelob in such a way that the two heros stab their enemies almost simultaneously, and we see both villians writhing in pain. (I know, I know, that means that the Shelob’s lair scene is spread over a greater period of time than it should have, but that can easily be attributed to a greater distance – color timing is not really an issue here because it’s always dark near Mordor.)

Gandalf now battles the Balrog immediately after he falls in Moria, and when it cuts to a wide shot of the two plummeting down into the watery depths, I fade slowly into the rest of the fellowship making their way out of Moria in despair. I cut out a lot of redundant lines of dialog, much of which will probably not be noticed except by the most hardcore fans of the movies.

I altered the color timing of some scenes to match the surrounding scenes, though I rarely had to do that.

For those who loved the multiple endings (and I’m actually one of them), sorry – I ended the movie at Aragorn’s coronation.

I will describe my edit in greater detail at a later time. I’ve stayed up far too late. Namarie – for now.

This sounds fantastic. So, how do I get a copy? Will you upload to bittorrent?

I'd be happy to send you a DVD of this and my POTO edit. (Are DVD+Rs or DVD-Rs more widely compatible?) Do you have anything I could trade them for?

It'd be nice to upload it to a torrent -- that way it would reach a wider audience (so far only friends and family have seen them) but I don't know how to do that . . . I'll post a question in the how-to forum.

Posting as a torrent is pretty easy. As soon as you know more, just tell me, I am very interested in your edit. As for trading discs: I live in Germany, so I guess this is going to be a bit expensive for both of us, isn't it? All CBB edits can soon be forwarded by Psycho Dayv inside the US.

OK, I figured out how to do it. I've posted a torrent of it in DivX (in reality XviD with "DivX" as its FourCC for compatibility reasons) on The Pirate Bay. (Mods, am I allowed to say that? I know I'm not allowed to post a direct link to a torrent.) Please let me know whether it works.

Once I reclaim some hard disk space, I can also post my DVD-5 version if you'd prefer that, which includes chapter menus.

I used that shot of Minas Tirith (color timed to look like it's at night) during Galadriel's telepathic speech to Elrond, which I used as a device to set up the forging of Anduril (obviously changing the context of her words).

finally, the torrent is working.

I am actually not convinced by the title screen and the cover art yet, but I am looking very forward to watching your edit.

The strange size of 1.1gigabytes seems to implicate you did not use gordian knot to encode your edit. I find GK pretty cool and it produces very good xvid quality.

In my edit, when Pippin picks up the Palantir at Isengard, he immediately sees the eye of Sauron. Here's a screencap of that scene (basically a zoomed-in version of the scene later in the movie when he looks into the Palantir):

I removed all references to the Mumakil ("Oliphaunts") entirely, so I had to zoom in portions of the Eowyn-Witchking confrontation in order to keep those creatures (mostly) out of sight. Here are some examples:

No, I've never used GK. I used a Premiere plugin to frameserve the video to VirtualDub, which I then used to encode it to 2-pass XviD and the LAME ACM to compress the audio to 192kbps MP3.

Well, I know what I know just by fiddling around with video editing for a couple years, and with a little help of a wonderful thing called the Internet.

I must confess that I did not work with full-quality source material. After ripping the DVDs I converted them to XviD before editing them in Premiere. I had to do this because of space considerations -- otherwise I would have been working with six full-length DVDs plus bonus material (the maps), which I did not have the hard disk space for. That being said, I think the output quality is decent, though that's for you guys to decide . . .

By the way, I realize I don't really get what you mean by "strange size of 1.1GB". What's strange about it?

I'd be interested to know what "compatibility reasons" you've read about that prompted you to change the 4CC?

Because XviD files should normally be split into CD-sized files for archival, i.e multiples of 700MB (the exception being short TV shows). For a film length of 3 hours, a 2-CD rip would be the most appropriate.

If you want to know more, find the txd2005 rules on Google.

Unfortunately my upload speed is way higher than my download speed. I have no idea why that is, but downloads are really slow for me. I think the system administrators at my college may be blocking something that affects our torrent downloads, but not uploads (?).

Haha, don't worry, lots of people here don't love the president either.

Actually the compatibility issue I spoke of is that, for some reason, Adobe Premiere doesn't display XviD files in its editing workspace unless its 4CC is DivX. This, of course, would not affect a final output file that I have no intention of editing with Premiere, but I just leave the XviD settings that way for all my encodes. So in a way it's more of a habit thing, I guess.

I see. I guess I generally keep my AVI files on a hard drive, which is why I don't usually bother to split them into CD length. (In fact, for multiple AVI files that I download, I usually concatenate them for archival on my hard drive.)

I took a first look at ten minutes of your edit. Sound editing is great, also is the editing of the movie. Still I would love to get my hands on a DVD version of this, because I expect much better quality. The avi picture is kind of jerky and it shakes with movement (I tried 3 different players with the same result). The avi is ok for a preview but not to be burned on a DVD, at least not on my system.

Hmm I just looked at it again and I think I see what you mean. I'll check the DVD when I have time and see if it has the same "jerkiness". Still, I don't think it's much of a problem, is it?
Author

Well, my wife says it's unwatchable, because of the shakes during movement. I can watch it like that, but to enjoy it (which it deserves), a better quality is needed (and I am by far no quality geek). Anyway I will watch it through and then post some further comments. Cool project, great idea.

Hmmm I'm not really sure what you mean by "shakes during movement". There is a slight bit of jerkiness, I'll grant you that, but frankly it doesn't look all that bad to me. I'll post a DVD-5 version for you soon for you to evaluate. Hopefully that'll be better.

I know that there is some -- "jerkiness" would probably not be the right word to describe it -- in the audio at some places, especially in the loud brass sections. After ripping my DVDs to my hard drive, I changed the framerate from 23.97 to 24 and used BeSweet to speed up the audio to match it (while keeping the pitch the same) and I guess that process came with a price. (Yes, by speeding up the movie ever so slightly, I guess I was cheating, in a way, since part of the "abridgement" came from the 0.125% increase in speed, which is really unnoticeable but adds up over time.)

If enough people show an interest in this project, maybe one day when I have time I will go back to my source files and try to fix all the problems. Till then, though, this is all I have to give.
