“Major”…

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

I enjoyed the movie more on second viewing, which was a pleasant surprise. I also seem to be in the minority when I say that I loved Yoda here. Maybe he looked a little too muppety in order to invoke nostalgia, but I think this is the best he’s looked since RotJ. And his mannerisms were way more on point. He felt old and goofy again, instead of moody and slick. On the whole, I’m happy to see the series testing new waters instead of re-treading the same pool. Mixed metaphors aside, I didn’t enjoy it as much as TFA, but thought it far outshined Rogue One.

I actually applaud for the effort done with Yoda in that scene. That said, when he first appears, it looks really bad for some reason, but I’ve only seen it once so I can’t say why it appeared so off. Maybe it was simply the bright(?) green color of him standing out so much under the dark. But once the bright fire is behind him, he is definitely the best Yoda on-screen since the OT.

Two real things I wasn’t a fan of in this movie: Canto Bight and Maz.

How possible are those to remove, and to what extent?

The Empire did nothing wrong

The PT CGI model is very good. So the best Yoda since the OT is in ROTS.

The best puppet representation of Yoda since ESB & ROTJ if that sounds better to you.

One thing that no one has yet considered in terms of fan-edits is the fact that there is a FULL HOUR of stuff that was cut out of this movie. I recall the actors being surprised that entire full sequences they shot for weeks were lifted out of the film completely.

So there may be things on the cutting room floor that might speak to plot holes and logic problems we have with the story itself.

And why the hell couldn’t it be Lando Poe was calling to get help with finding a codebreaker? That would so fit with the character and Billie Dee could have done it with gravitas - PLUS it would give us a hope that Lando has a few friends of the Resistance still out there. Missed opportunity, and better.

I find your lack of faith…disturbing

Just built a new PC, and I look forward to TLJ being my first fan edit on it.

Also, I just realized this morning that because TLJ picks up right after TFA, I might try to get really creative and do a double fan edit of both, moving things from one film to the next and such. Hopefully we get a lot of extra footage on the TLJ blu-ray (and I wouldn’t mind seeing another TFA release with more deleted scenes). Fingers crossed!

What about Hux new look ? It seems as if a few weeks happened between both movies… but I know you’re right: if SKB is destroyed at Day-0, Rey finds Luke on his (not so) lonely island at Day-1, while the FO attacks the Resistance Base.

(by the way I loved the badass old dude FO officer: who was the actor I’m sure I know him from somewhere ?)

For starters, I’ll be attempting to remove the whole Finn and Rose subplot. It seemed to simply be a device to give Finn something to do (as well as an agenda filled romp courtesy of Rose).

As many others have stated, there was a lot to like and a lot to dislike in this film. I really look forward to editing this one, and I’ll certainly be checking out numerous other fan edits.

After my second viewing of the movie, I’ve learned to enjoy it a little more than what I did on my initial watch. That said, there are definitely areas that could benefit from fanediting.

While I won’t go into all the details at this moment (early Christmas celebration with family about to begin), one specific item that I think would have been ideal would have been for “The Jedi Steps” to have played when Luke walked out to confront Kylo. So that it starts small and quiet during his brief chat with Leia, and then crescendos into a powerful and loud theme from The Jedi Steps as he walks out the door.

Just a thought.

I’ve just got back from my second viewing, and I too was able to enjoy it a lot more this time. I think going into it initailly with such a clear idea of what I had expected and hoped would happen hindered my enjoyment. Going in without those feelings meant I could appreciate the twists and turns more.

That being said some of my initial cocerns have only been consolidated.

I can understand why Holdo wouldn’t initially tell Poe the plan if she didn’t trust him, but once he started risking lives and mutinying it makes no sense to me that she would still refuse to inform him of plan. It just feels like such contrived drama and poor writing, and I’m hoping it will be possible to remedy this somewhat with a fan edit.

There were many comedic moments that I feel could be removed, as well as some clunky dialogue, though this appears to be something everone else is already thinking.

The crawl seemed a little off to me as well, the third paragraph starting with “But” didn’t seem right. I plan on messing around with moving the ending of TFA to the start of this film to see how that could work.

Could someone please replace the Yoda with a non-creepy puppet.

I actually liked the puppet because it’s the same as from rotj.

The puppet looked slightly off in the long shots (not even awful like some said) and when you get the close up shots it looks absolutely perfect. No hyperbole there, it looks like a carbon copy of ROTJ Yoda.

Just from memory things I’d like to see removed

  • Cut Domhnall Gleeson’s over the top acting. Let him sneer and piss Kylo off, but cut the near orgasm he has when he’s drunk with power. He’s not bloody Palpatine.

  • Cut the broom kid, and in fact cut most of that shit involving them. It reminded me too much of Phantom Menace.

  • Cut the decoder rings…is this 1992? We getting those in cereal boxes?

  • Trim most of the Casino stuff. I wasn’t bothered by it, but I feel it shifted the film’s tone, and sadly I didn’t care.

  • I don’t mind the little shit weasle muppets, just trim most of their attention stealing stuff. I kind of liked watching Chewie eat one.

  • Cut Kylo going emo with his helmet. I honestly think you could cut all scenes with him wearing it.

  • Find a way to trim the meeting of Finn and Rose. Maybe cut the stunning part if possible, and swipe to him telling Hispanic Han about their plan.

  • As stated before, trim droid nonsense.

  • Cut Super Leia…perhaps find a way to have the explosion, and a cut to her in the hospital bed. We’d pretty much fill in the gaps that she made it.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

You do realize that most of the ridiculous plot issues (such as Super Leia or Deus Ex BB8) is impossible to remove without creating massive continuity issues ? (at some point you’ll have to accept that or do with the ST what most people here have done with the PT: forget it ever happened…)

Umm, no.

You cut from the explosion to the hospital bed, which is easy to connect the dots. You also get the speech which summarizes what happens from Holdo and how Leia was the one lucky survivor.

And you can easily cut from Phasma showing up to Finn grabbing the electric baton and then them fighting. You still see right after that, the troopers firing on Rose from different angles so it’s not like the troopers would be there and then gone. Then you cut Rose and BB-8 on the walker after the fight and just cut from Phasma dying to their ship leaving.

Both big issues can be easily removed with zero continuity issues. Most issues with this movie probably can.

I’ll be interested to watch that for sure, 'cause seems very hard this time to achieve it. But with the wizards around here, might be possible.
With a 2 hours and a half (very long) running time, this movie could be massively reduced and still get an average 2 hours running time.

Editing super leia seems pretty easy to do. Essentially removing the sections where she is sucked out … cut out her flying in. You can cut from the crew running down the hall and keep the part with her hand at the window.

The BB-8 and walker scene seems a bit tougher… I think I didn’t mind it too much.

I agree with all of this except the helmet stuff. It’s part of his being teased and called out by SNOKE, and plays into his finally offing him

Only seen it once but…
My initial reaction is something like unnnnhhhhhhhhhhh…

Cut Finn and rose. And Bennie the bull with them. Finn can wake up at the end in his bacta bag and missed the whole thing. And super leia. Uhhh kill her or atleast dhe wake up in the hospital. And ultra fake yoda. And the indeginous muppets. Snoke looks Hella fake too. Cut the greyhound horses and the bb-8 antics kids decoder rings poe being an ass as much as possible cut the whole maz scene, code breaker tracking through lights peed uhhhhhhh… stop the movie from jumping everywhere. I am tired and will come back with my second viewing cutlist. Please Darth mickey give us deleted scenes, your our only hope.
