Things you never noticed before in the films

Working on making a DVD of the trilogy means you usually watch pieces of footage many times to make sure your cleanup filters aren't destroying the picture quality etc., this leads to seeing bits & pieces you never noticed before, so far I've noticed:

ANH: Stormtroopers - when they're running through the forest to get C-3PO & R2-D2 they're all looking down at the ground because the helmets have limited vision, you could out run them easily in a forest
ANH: Greedo - for a single frame, just before he's shot by Han, you see a really bad mock-up that's so obviously not got a person inside the suit
ANH: Luke's parents - holy crap I just noticed this for the first time after seeing the film so many times, when Luke gets back to his home after the empire have destroyed it, you see two smoking skeletons outside on the ground!

What things has anyone else noticed during watching the same piece/film after many time?

While it is rather difficult to make out what the smoking mass is, I'm still kinda surprised you didn't pick up on this until now (assuming you've seen the films for several years.)

Funnily enough, after just watching DE's ANH, I heard for the first time Han Solo yelling wahoooo as he leaps down the trash compactor. Very cheesy. Sadly I could have lived the rest of my life without knowing that and been happy.

The funniest thing about that poor looking Greedo dummy is that it isn't even wearing a similar costume as the actor! I believe Darth Editous (or maybe ADigitalMan) cut out the worst frames in that sequence, which is good because everytime I see that scene at normal speed I still clearly see that dumm dumby... I mean dumb dummy!

In the past I never really paid much attention to the detail in the films - they were just entertainment, until he started mucking about with them and adding that god-awful CGI etc. and then they stopped playing the original trilogy on tv I started noticing things, but as with most films I don't start noticing the minor details until I convert them onto DVD.

I always kinda wondered how the smoking corpses made it past the censors.

Well actually it is rumoured that the shots of the burning bodies were added to avoid an MPAA rating of G, as it was believed that rating would hurt ticket sales.

There is *no* way Star Wars was anywhere near a G rating, with or without the bodies. I think you are confusing SW with ET, where Lucas added the "penis breath" line to get a PG rating, which was automatic for such language.

One thing I'm beginning to notice is reactions of characters in the background. For instance, watch the scene in A New Hope when they just leave Mos Eisley, they're in space and they're being chased by star destroyer. Keep your eyes on Mark Hamill for the whole scene and watch his reactions to Han Solo especially.

It's great to watch a whole movie like that! It's almost like watching a whole new film!

I think he meant Return of the Jedi on Endor. I subconsciously remember them looking down as they went up that hill...

Something I never noticed until about a year ago was how absurd it is for the Stormtroopers to find all those parts. I can't even believe R2 or 3PO were still functional by the time the JAWAS found them.

Nah, I'm not confusing anything, just rehashing the very old rumour!

Didn't they just find one part though? From them they followed their tracks...which lead them to the Sandcrawler which lead them to Luke's home.

Wait now that I think about it...if they were following the tracks of the Sandcrawler...they would have passed by Luke's house first...I'm sure they would have interrogated any household that that monster of a machine passed by?

Oh god...it's just a movie!

What? One O ring (or whatever it should be called)? Wasn't that just part of his shell? They didn't need a trail of parts to follow, they just needed to know what they were looking for and how it got past the sensors.

If you ever go slo-mo though a lot of the effects shots when sabers cut through bars or blasters or shots of blaster hits you'll notice that most of the explosions usually occur a frame or two before they are hit.

Actually if you want a long list of most of the obscure bloopers only noticable if you freeze frame through all the movies just Google up Star Wars Bloopers. Considering most of these 'bloopers' were found by people not working on restoration you have to wonder what sad lives they live watching the movies in freeze frame for enjoyment!

The only think that really jumped out at me that I had never noticed before I started doing this , and cannot now un-notice, was the bizzaro greedo frame just before he explodes.
Although for the 'archive' version it will be left as is, on my own version I will have to replace that frame for my own sanity.

Stuff I have been noticing is mainly the horrible amount of variance in the colour grade.

The other thing I had never thought about before, then noticed, was a reaction shot from Hamill, but I don't really want mention here as it really does wreck an important part of the film, and you literally can't unsee it once you notice it.

But you could tell Luke, is that who you could tell?

Please PM me with the movie-wrecking information - I love that kind of stuff

Cheers,

I saw the Greedo dummy frame when I was subtitling that scene. Even now I know it's there, I still don't notice it when watching at normal speed.

There's also the discolouration that appears regularly on the frame before a scene change.

Would you guys be happier if George blew up the actor in the Greedo costume instead?

The Stormtroopers in the forest, I meant ROTJ not ESB (was tired when I started this thread)

edit: ANH not ESB (god I've really got stop posting when I'm half asleep!)

I once watched Jedi just looking at Mark Hamill's eyes to see how often he blinked. Believe it or not, I only saw him blink twice in the whole movie. This is glaringly obvious in the scene with Luke and Leia talking in the ewok village.
Don't forget: with Lacuna, you can forget.

I never noticed the tape at some of the first and last frames of serveral shots.

A new release of Star Wars is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Tape like splicing tape? If so, where was the last time YOU saw Star Wars!? Perhaps you mean the adhesive residue from the cement splices needed to cement the negatives together. It's really apparent on scope films since there is barely any space left between frames.
