It's not a good idea to make your home address viewable to the public. If you are looking for specific releases, ask about where you can find them first, then pm someone to set up a trade if you can't obtain them on your own.

Getting back on topic, just wanted to add my kudos to ocpmovie for an outstanding job on SW Classic Edition. I'd owned the first TR47 set and this CE version is pretty much very close to perfection as far as fan-made orginal SW versions go. Very seemless transistions between official DVDs and LD material. Aside from ever seeing the finished mverta SW Legacy project this will have to suffice, and it definitely does.

Great job!

Thanks Blue!

As far as Cato's posts go, I'm just bashing my head against the desk. Some people just don't get how these things are done. Hm.

For those who missed it the first time around (like me), Star Wars CE was posted to a.b.sw last week.

Apart from a few DV artifacts mentioned in the .nfo (and slightly strong colors in my eyes) it's a great package.
Nice soundtracks & commentary.
The addition of the '77 mono mix lines to the DC soundtrack is a great feature.
Cowclops V.1 material still looks good and deserves its reputation, no problem here.
And it has professionnal looking menus too...

Thanks for creating & sharing this Classic Edition.

Hey Seb-

I would LOVE to see this edition of Star Wars (as well as the CE of Empire), but where and what is a.b.sw? Torrent site? Thanks!

a.b.sw is Alt.Binaries.starwars. It is a newsgroup. Some ISPs provide newsgroup access, some don't. If yours doesn't, or if it doesn't archive back far enough to get it, you can e-mail ocpmovie directly and he can tell you how to get a copy.

The Tribune article broke a couple days back and appears in the Empire Classic thread as well as the originaltrilogy.com in the press thread.

Maybe I should actually start doing the newsgroups. I never have and know nothing about the process. Any suggestions for someone on a Mac, Apple Network, fast connection, doesn't want to spend much/any money?

OCP, for the Mac I use "Unison" on OSX, and it does the trick for me.
PM me if you want some help setting it all up - it can be a bit confusing at first.

Ell, A newsgroup is a discussion group on Usenet that is for talking about a specific topic e.g. alt.binaries.starwars would likely have discussions and files to do with star wars - alt.binaries.ilovemonkeys would have discussions and files for people who have a penchant for monkeys etc.

Newgroups can store files, messages, pictures etc. but you need a newsreader program to be able to connect to the newsgroup, browse/read what is there and download or post files or messages.

The big deal about newsgroups is that unlike a torrent or "Direct Connect" hub etc. you are not dependant on the speed of the 'uploader'. Once a file is on the newsgroup, you can typically download it at the full speed of your particular internet connection.

So if you are on a 1.5mb/512k ADSL connection for instance, you would get around 150KB per second when downloading from newsgroups. (Whereas you might only get 2K per second from a torrent if the uploader has a slow or busy connection.)

Some ISPs support newsgroups, so if you have a good ISP, you can just download a simple download oriented newsreader (like Grabit for the PC or Unison for the Mac), subscribe to alt.binaries.starwars, tell it to grab all the headers (This can take a while the first time - some newsgroups have over 4 million headers/files) and then choose the files to download.

If your ISP is not so good, then a lot of the files may display as incomplete, or not show up at all - in that case you need a 'newsgroup provider' and pay a monthly fee to get access to newsgroups. Companies like giganews provide this type of service, have extremely fast servers, and keep the files for over a month and the files are nearly always 100% complete, so they are well worth it unless your ISP is spectacular.
The provider will give you an account with a username and password, and you put that into your newsreader software and off you go.

Almost anything imaginable is out there on Newsgroups, from music, old TV shows, esoteric films, abandonware, special interest stuff - it is like a whole other internet of treasures waiting to be accessed at full speed.

Once you newsgroup, you can never go back....

Amen, brother! I also use Unison on OS X and it works great. There are a couple of freeware apps that handle PAR and RAR files on the Mac nicely. There are links to them on Unison's website. I honestly have not fired up Azureus since going with the Unison/Giganews combo.

Laserman, here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Your posts have always been very enlightening and you'll be missed. Do check in from time to time .

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

Who is your internet provider?? In the UK, ntl and Virgin have free access but I am unsure of other providers.

All the information you need is linked to here.

To get started, I suggest using Forte Agent 2 and either your ISP or a premium service. (I use Astraweb's 65Gb for $25 as a premium backup to my ntl service)

I dunno if I'd start with agent for a noob - it isn't the most straighforward of newsreaders, but is probably the most powerful on the PC.

A premium news server is between $20 and $40 per month for unlimited downloads.
There are a bunch out there, giganews is not the cheapest but is excellent, and there are lots of others out there, but try your ISP first, go to the ISP homepage and look in the configuration or help section and find the setup for news service and follow the instructions.

One problem with ISP provided newsgroup access is that they sometimes limit the downloads per month. My ISP, for example, limits you to something like 1-2 gig, which is too small for anything like a DVD. That is why I am still on torrents personally. Maybe I'll go with a premium newsgroup provider sometime. Because everything else here is going on newsgroups, and little seems to make the torrents anymore.

Apparently they do have a server (news.btinternet.com), why don't you fire up a Usenet client and have a look if there are any binary groups on there?
