Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (you knew it was coming sooner or later)
Say what you will about the flaws in this movie (and there are many), but it's hard to find fault with Liam Neeson. He always gives his all in whatever film he's in, and his characterization of Qui-Gon Jinn is no exception. His Qui-Gon is the Jedi we all want to see: quiet, dignified, wise in many ways, yet not afraid to "mix it up" when he has to (and he has the skills to back it up).
Qui-Gon was lifeless and boring, which I guess made him seem dignified when put on the screen next to the silly antics of Jar Jar and Anakin.
Obi-wan as played by Alec Guiness - that was dignified.
Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything. I should have known better than to post even a single positive opinion about any aspect of the prequels.
There are a few positive aspects of the PT that I can think of (and there are whole threads dedicated to that) but I would agree with TPR that Liam Neeson isn't one of them. You said it that it's hard to find fault with Neeson and I don't find it hard at all. There does seem to be a fair amount of Qui-Gon love on these boards, but I can safely say I don't understand it in the least.
And this is coming from a chap who, while not having any posters or tattoos of the man, consider him to generally be a highlight of the pictures he's in. I can't say I go out of my way to see all of his movies, but I generally consider him to be a plus.
Just not in TPM. For the same reasons as TPR already listed. I find him terribly dull and flat. And wholly unconvincing.
EDIT: Something positive about MJPollard's post... Well, it was bold. Or do I just have to be positive about TPR's post? It was true. Wait, I guess I replied to MJP afterall... It was... defeated?
