Info: My attempt at color correcting the GOUT (Outdated thread - though lots of info) — Page 5

I understand this scripting of yours is one setting for the entire film, but I seriously recommend anyone color correcting the '06 bonus disc to treat at least the opening shot separately, as the '77 film element they spliced in have a vastly different white level (contrast) compared to the '93 LD-master.

Flash frame on the spliced in material:

Flash frame on the '93 LD-master:

I'm not entirely sure but I believe the splice occur right before the "A long time ago" text, the Fox logo and Lucasfilm logo is definitely from the '93-telecine.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Actually, this thread is very outdated now, since I've rewritten all scripts to use for DJ's blu V2. And even though it's one setting for the whole movies, even that part you mention looks good, and not out of place. And I wasn't aiming for perfection either, since that would require a shot by shot correction.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread. I wanted to play around with You_Too's script but the curve files in post #4 seem to be unavailable. You_Too, could you upload them again please?

Thank you

I'm sorry, but since this thread is so outdated, even the scripts you'll find here are. And the curves might be too.

I'm using new scripts and curves for dark_jedi's Blu V2, and we kind of want to keep the exact settings a bit secret, at least for now. I'll probably post the new color settings once that project is finished.

Why, in a community that is transparent and giving like this one, would you would want to do this? I think I know the answer, but I would love to hear your take on it.

OH please enlighten the whole community with your answer oh great one, you are such an arrogant piece of ........

:: Despite your attempt to self-censor, this is still a personal attack to my eyes. Since you've already had a warning, under the forum rules you have now gained yourself a temporary ban.

and you can sit there and type away that your shit is in this script all you want, but this was one of my goals from the start that I wanted everything you have done OUT! you act like you are the know all of everything GOUT related, well sir your shit has been passed up now so why don't you just take a seat and STFU!

some people, unbelievable lmao, but it is cool that this bothers you though, it must suck for you.

Wait, you really think I'm sore because my crappy color correction settings have been surpassed? Guess again.

I think everyone else knows that the only reason you would keep your settings a secret is you are afraid that someone might use some portion of your settings and then share their results with everyone, and then it wouldn't be known as Dark Jedi's version. Alternatively, you could keep them a secret because they aren't ready for prime time, but as you have already shown the results of the settings, I doubt this is the case.

And the only thing I claim to know is what everyone else knows. That the spatial and temporal information is gone. Sampling theory proves that it can't be recovered, so I "took a seat" a long time ago. There might be some things that you could do to get back some information in static shots, but when I suggested this, you went off on some self-important rant that got the thread shut down.

So, no. It doesn't bother me. You, on the other hand, do bother me.

Ok, the settings I meant to keep secret was the current color settings and curves. Not because I don't wanna share them, but mostly because when I made this thread I wanted input and critique to help me find the best settings.

Right now we're too far in the process with Blu V2 to go back to that state, and I know people will criticize it even now, they always do. Except now I'm 100% happy with them and I'm confident I can't do better. I worked for a long time to make the settings and curves.

And of course we don't want someone else to use this script right now to make their own version. Eventually someone could release their own version, modifying the color settings I made, saying they've improved what me and DJ have used as the base of our project for quite a while. Then the talk would start, and the critique, and so on. And we might've lost the will to keep working on it.

So no offense to anyone who wants to try the scripts out. Once we've presented the final version of our work, I will share the color settings and curves.

You_Too: it's your work, and I understand your reasons. Actually I downloaded your wip curve files some time ago, but I left them on my other machine when I recently moved to another courtry... ehm :) Looking forward to your final results, I'm sure they're going to be great.

dark_jedi: that's why you said that V2 is not for everyone? Because the whole project is just a huge ego trip?

The way I see it is.....every fan community has the opportunity of turning in to "40+ year old soccer mom" duran duran fans that get all bug-eyed and bat-shit crazy when someone sheds a little light on the "fantasy".

It's all part-in-parcel to the passion that is fandom......it being good or bad is an entirely different conversation.

My point being that the final outcome is something we all work towards and look forward to in a community and at the end of the day, the pissing contests are obtrusive and affect no positive progress.

I have always said these upscale projects are not going to be for everyone(you can read this at the bottom of my 1st post in my original thread) some like these types of projects some don't, also the color, some like these changes some don't, and this project is way more colorful than anything I have ever done, it is really different, it actually took me a while to get used to, and you say an "ego" trip, lmao! yea a gout project is surely a great feeling ego trip.

This is not directed to anyone, but out to the universe= I'll all for people trying to best each others versions - just don't piss the other person off enough to make them stop working on theirs, Theres handfuls of abandoned projects when you look back through the threads (and those were ones that got positive feedback and encouragement). More projects, more versions!

I've stopped a few of the things I started because of seeing such things here.  I love that we all have an idea of what we'd like to see and it is harder for some than others to affect that change by trying it themselves because they don't have the technical knowledge and/or skills that others have or have access to.  Healthy rivalry is certainly conducive to better looking projects but angry posts.....they gotta go.  Just saying....

I don't understand why Dark Jedi is compelled to be a jerk to anyone who even flirts with the idea of offending his (overly-delicate) sensibilities.

I have no beef with him personally, and I'm looking forward to his and You-Too's project as much as the next guy... but the always-full-on-abrasive-and-unpleasant shtick got old like 6 years ago. It's just not necessary, it's bizarre if anything. You don't have to lash out and everyone and anyone who offers the smallest critique. Just chill the fuck out, seriously.

An alternate point of view - at the risk of a ticking off is.....

(This is a general observation as I do not know the full history behind the comments from DJ or others involved higher up this thread)

For every decent, honest member of these forums over the years who really do give a damn about what we are here for, there have always been a steady stream of obnoxious knob-heads who basically piss off the decent folk.

Look back at the oldest threads and see some of the names of people back then who formed this community and many are long gone. My guess is that many were simply driven away.....

In my 7 1/2 years here, I have spent twice as much time not taking part as taking part because of the idiots. Most of my interactions with members has been via PM's and e-mail just to keep away from some of the crap that flies about here.

In my opinion, it is those just here to stir up trouble who should be banned and not the people who are reacting to crap being thrown their way.

The same things that annoy DJ annoy me too but I just react differently or just bugger off for a year or two.

The technical aspects of this stuff go so far over my head, all the script info and what not.  I'm just very excited that these are being released on Blu Ray format.... I can imagine how much time and energy goes into getting all these done and it is very much appreciated.  I'll have a really nice set of coasters also with my official releases!
