I love this release...

full-res

I've been a little lax on the image rule the last couple days, but let's try and stick to it. Nothing over 800px wide please.

Wow... didn't notice that. Creepy and funny picture.

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

It's not a single picture! It's about 12 unrestorable frames. Even both fields inside the frame are broken.

I would suggest to change the thread's name into: "Stormtrooper showing terrible IVTC/telecine artefacts"

Goldangit ... now they're going to get Karen Traviss or somebody to rewrite the Tale of Davin Felth to explain why he has four eyes, and fill it with "Mando'a."

That's where it came from. It's fine on pre-THX NTSC LDs, and THX PAL LDs. I'm sure it's this -- among many other things -- that the X0 Project is looking to fix with the Japanese SC discs.

Oh, I thought this came from the PAL dsic. Wow, makes me want to buy it even less.

I should clarify:

This particular bit of evidence for the crappiness of the GOUT release first appeared on the Faces/THX/Definitive Collection NTSC LDs, presumably as an artifact of the DVNR noise reduction process. It only seems to be an issue in this scene on the NTSC version. The PAL THX LDs don't show this error. And neither do transfers (such as the Japanese Special Collection) prior to the DVNR'ed releases.

I've watched the new SW DVD (NTSC) and I didn't see any evidence of that.

Evidence of what?

It's there, you just have to use slo-mo if you can't catch it in regular motion. As someone who's gone through the whole film shot by shot and frame by frame, I can tell you that there are hundreds of shots that have the same problems. They all stem from the 1993 THX DVNR process that cleaned up the dirt. Interesting side effect, isn't it?

so this is the worst dvd release in the history of man, is it? Too bad this is the only way we can legally get the OOT now.

The multiple stormtrooper eyes, which I believe was the original subject of this thread.

I didn't watch the movie in slo-mo, I didn't watch it frame-by-frame, I just watched it, and enjoyed it. I think you'll find that there are a lot of flaws you'll thankfully miss that way. Personally, I think that whatever flaws that are evident are less objectionable than the flaws in the 2004 DVDs (Greedo shooting first comes to mind....)

I've seen worse, but usually they are old tape to DVD transfers of crappy dubbed, pan and scan, kung fu movies by companies like Xenon, Ground Zero, and even Tai Seng.

But it's Star Wars, we have to accept it. Right? Right?
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

And most people are going to be like you in that they don't really notice things like this. The sad part is that those of us who know the flaws are there are going to notice them every time and be distracted by them. I noticed the problems initially when I was watching at normal speed, however. Call it a keen eye, or a curse...

Yeah, I do hate that when you notice flaws or when they're pointed out, they're almost impossible to miss every subsequent time, even if you never noticed them before.

After looking at the slide show of things they changed for the SE, I can't miss any of those things now. I can't believe I never noticed the snow speeder showing through Luke's head before.

......and the Stormtrooper banging his head on the door, and the cameraman's reflection in Threepio's head.....those are the kinds of mistakes I don't mind seeing.

It's on my '93 sourced dvd. I noticed it before and thought it was bad compression. I think a similar thing happens when R2 is sucked into the Jawa truck. With the new release, I could see it a lot clearer. Makes me wonder if a lot of the other scenes with bad compression from Empire and Jedi (Jabba's Palace) are also badly smeared.

I'm normally really bad at spotting film defects at normal speed, but I noticed the DVNR "trails" during the Hoth battle.

I agree fully. If I have to watch a movie in slow motion (or even worse, frame by frame) to notice a problem - then it's not a problem I'm going to waste any energy on.

I watched it all the way through last night. It had been years since I'd seen it and it was fading from memory. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

There were probably others but I didn't see them. I only saw far away worlds, a hero, space ships, and a princess.

Truthfully - I missed the stormtrooper glitch the day before. I only noticed it the second time because someone went to the trouble of screen grabbing it, posting it, and starting an internet discussion about it - good job.

But it's just par for the course these days. We live in a society now where people go out of their way to make sure everyone else is as unhappy as they are. I guess there weren't enough people hating it and something had to be done.

Well, I don't really care about these minor things - especially when they don't impact the performance when "just watching the film". Of course it's all part of the Lucasfilm money grabbing machine not to put any "unnecessary" effort into the release of the OUT (or GOUT if you please). It's a philosophy George Lucas adopted somewhere down the road of making his films.

When I went into the store and bought these babies, I knew these would be like a "Laserdisc copied to a DVD" - I knew what I would get.

The 2004 editions on the other hand - represent an inferior product that was rushed out the door (heck even the original film material that was still in the process of being cleaned up was taken away from lowry before he could even finish the job). If you want to be mad at something about this release, then please be mad about the fact that you're forced to buy a product along the way that was created with todays technology and still looks like a heap of crap by todays quality standards (color balancing, mouse pointers moving through the picture, incomplete foley track in ANH, messed up musical score, lollipop uni-colored lightsabers, etc.).

Sadly, it really seems some people have lost the ability to just sit down and "just watch the film". Just try to be glad that none of the people who commited the crime of "improving the presentation quality" of the 2004 editions, tried to do the same with the OUT. I for one am glad they didn't meddle with it at all.
