Anyway, as I wrote in my original post

What is the correct way how to watch all Star Wars stuff, when I want to include

  • the 6 theatrical movies
  • the Droids animated series
  • the Ewoks animated series
  • the 2 Ewoks movies
  • the Holiday Special (yes, I REALLY want to watch it :-) )
  • the Clone Wars animated series
  • the Clone Wars CG movie
  • the Clone Wars CG TV show

so any reply recommending to watch only the original trilogy is absolutely useless, but I hope you guys at least had a fun time :-)

Just reposting this since we're on page 2 and it was on page 1...

I'll just save everyone some time and say the only correct way to watch all Star Wars stuff is:

SW
ESB
ROTJ

Because nothing else is Star Wars.  End of discussion.

(note: I don't believe this myself, I'm just anticipating several pages of similar posts and arguments which have been repeated over and over)

See everyone on page 3!

Edit: CRAP!!!  See you on page 4.

I WANT to watch it in chronological order, is that really that hard to understand ?

You can watch them however you want... backwards or upside down for all I care.  But that wasn't your question... you asked what was the "correct" viewing order, and to that my best answer is to watch them in the order that they were made. Otherwise the flashbacks aren't flashbacks, and therefore major plot twists and surprises in the OT are spoiled. But if you prefer it that way, I have no problem with that.

I SERIOUSLY love you, guys :-)

And Puggo, you're right, I should be more precise, with "CORRECT" I meant "CHRONOLOGICALLY CORRECT" :-)

Chronological then:

  1. The Phantom Menace
  2. Attack of the Clones
  3. Clone Wars (seasons 1&2)
  4. The Clone Wars movie
  5. The Clone Wars series
  6. Clone Wars (season 3)
  7. Revenge of the Sith
  8. Droids animated series
  9. A New Hope
  10. The Holiday Special
  11. The Empire Strikes Back
  12. Caravan of Courage
  13. The Battle for Endor
  14. Return of the Jedi

Not sure on the animated Clone Wars series, since Season 3 leads right into Episode III, but the first two seasons should occur before the CG series.  They don't really fit together anyway, but neither do the Ewoks series/movies.  Lucasfilm just WANTS them to tie in.

Doubleofive, as I stated on page 1, watch the first 21 Chapters of the Micro-Series, then the CGI Movie and TV Series, then the last 4 chapters of the Micro-Series, then ROTS.

Well, I have thought of this for when I turn my possible children into nerds.

Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi

then I will just see if they like them, and tell them that they can watch the PT just to see how awful it is. Chances are, they will like the PT better, because they are kids.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Yeah, Droids is pre-ANH.

I guess with any of these stories you can realize what they were ORIGINALLY INTENDED to be... that is, where they took place in the saga.

The Ewok movies as I understand it, were supposed to be post-ROTJ. Saying that they took place BEFORE ROTJ is just retroactive continuity.

The prequels are set before the OT, so you theoretically could watch them first. The bad continuity aside, though, they are more like "flashbacks" so you could justify watching them after.

Personally I think the viewing experience is worse if you see the PT first (EVEN IF you've seen the OT a million trillion times).

There is definatly a different effect if you watch 1-3 THEN 4-6, than the other way around (the traditional order).

I just don't buy into the whole "you HAVE to see it this way."

Retcons keep changing things, so the order changes (Ewok movies) or things didn't happen (Droids). But who cares about that? As far as Lucas is concerned, the Holiday Special never happened (but still, he's let the EU folks cannibalize parts of it all the same).

The whole controversy over the "order" I think stems mostly from people wanting to be "true to the vision" of Mr. Lucas. The trouble is that "vision" keeps changing. So do we stay true to what Lucas "originally intended" in 1977? 1985? 1994? 2001? 2008? etc.

From what I've seen kids these days DO prefer the prequels, but they grow out of them fast, and if they do give the OT a chance they like it better (or they give up on star wars completely).

What I think most classic fans are talking about is not that "oh those wipper snappers, the fact that they were kids when the prequels came out means they don't know anything but we're infallible" but that you have "only one chance" to see Star Wars for the first time, and to make it special, please watch it the traditional way (production order). After that, do whatever you want. Now of course these "kids who grew up with the prequels" (many of whom don't think Star Wars is that cool anyway, I've found) can't do the whole "Star Wars virgin marathon" thing anyway, and the fact that they'd want to .... blah blah blah

You've heard all this before. ;)

Of course I prefer the 4-5-6-1-2-3 order to be watched first,

but I think the 4-5-1-2-3-6 is really a good option too. Flashback PT appearing after the Ep5 father reveal makes sens, then continue with the conclusion in Ep6.

Plus the final space battle of ROTJ is still the best looking battle of all 6 movies IMO, so it would not be too jarring compared to the special effects of the PT.

This drives me nuts.  Every time I see this, I think "the Clone Wars cartoon was on The Cartoon Network, not The CW!"

The only correct way to watch then is by viewing Wookiee Groomer's Addicted to Star Wars.

Be sure you have the Clone Wars Series and the Ewok movies and the Holiday Special on separate screens.  And don't forget to have the radio drama's on shuffle in your iPod in one ear.  And have all the comics laid out on the floor and all of your novels open.  If you don't have a Jedi robe on, a mountain dew in your vintage Burger King collectors glass and a mouthful of C-3Po's cereal, you don't deserve to be call a true fan-boy.

The correct order is the order in which they were released:

1977 - Star Wars (aka Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope)
1978 - The Star Wars Holiday Special
1980 - Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
1983 - Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
1984 - The Ewok Adventure (aka Caravan of Courage)
1985 - Star Wars: Ewoks (Season 1)
1985 - Star Wars: Droids
1985 - Ewoks: The Battle for Endor
1986 - Droids: The Great Heep
1986 - Star Wars: Ewoks (Season 2)
1999 - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
2002 - Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
2003 - Star Wars: Clone Wars (Seasons 1 and 2, DVD Volume One)
2005 - Star Wars: Clone Wars (Season 3, DVD Volume Two)
2005 - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
2008 - Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Theatrical Film)
2008-Present - Star Wars: The Clone Wars (TV Series)

Personally, I'd just stop at 1983, while also skipping 1978, but that's just me.

If you're already a fan, then hey, go ahead and watch them in any order you want.  But any chronological order just would not work for anyone who's never seen any Star Wars.

pittrek kinda covered it, but I was going to point out (for anyone that cares) that The Clone Wars jumps around all over the place timeline wise. It probably should have been called "Tales From the Clone Wars". Like the first 2 eps of Season 3 act as a bookend for an episode from season 1,  but then again a large amount of time passes between all three, so they're probably spread out over the entire the war.  So as a result, the chronological order of the shows episodes are constantly changing as new ones air.  I'm sure once the show concludes they'll take the opportunity to release the full series again re-shuffled into order Young Indiana Jones Chronicles style.

I donno, I kinda dig the show, even though the animation style still bugs me at times.  Some of the episodes are very well written, especially in comparison to the PT. But I've been reading EU material as long as I've been a fan of Star Wars, so while the original trilogy will always sit atop the shining hill for me, I have no problem enjoying the multitude of other Star Wars offerings. And believe me, if you've read some of the early EU, the PT doesn't hurt quite as much.

IV, II, V, III, VI. So much cooler, and screw anyone else who tells me differently! In this way I can dilute the old audio/video quality with the shitty new dialogue and plot holes - actually to be honest now I just watch my edit, then V then III then VI. I have a feeling that when parts II and III of my edit are done, I'll only ever watch it that way. Of course this is all just personal preference and not at all the "correct" viewing order.

If you were going for Chronological, I would HIGHLY recommend playing TFU 1&2 or watching the cutscenes at least between episodes III and IV.
