Don't know if it will make you feel better, but I can remember a time that I wouldn't watch anything in B+W because I thought anything without color was "boring". Not sure how old I was when I got over that particular idea. But I guess it's the same with anything, as you get older your tates change and develop; I can also remember a time when I wouldn't read any book that didn't have illustrations, and wouldn't watch anything that wasn't animated... -that- was a LONG time ago though...

Even George Lucas doesn't like colorized films, and he's all about modern technology in film making. But yah, I remember that I really didn't like black and white movies when I was very young, but stuff like Laurel & Hardy and other classics that were suited for a younger audience kinda convinced me slowly but surely.

Or... I'm surprised no one's mentioned the epitome of black and white: ZORRO!

Leave the f-word in the gutter and let's get to the point: Is all you care about in a movie the over-all story? What about the characters (some movie characters are so cool that you grow fond of them, even though the story sucks) and certain moments that make a movie special? I prefer character-driven stories, where the story evolves around them, not vice versa.

Take "Lost in Translation", for instance. If you watch it primarily for the story, you'll probably get pretty bored. But if you watch it with a focus on the characters, you'll fall in love with the movie instantly.

Plus many movies I like have no CGI.

Aliens
CGI aside, "Aliens" for example was ENHANCED (the scenes were "expanded", more material was added, you're getting a deeper look into the characters: Ripley, Newt, Hicks) -- it wasn't ALTERED in any way (i.e. no change of the already existing material: lines, music score, etc.).

THAT's the difference and the reason why many SW fans reject the SE.

As for colorization: Well, everthing's been said. When you colorize a movie, you alter it, you don't enhance it.

Doc
Taylor: Oh H, whatever happened to the way of the warrior??
Harold: The way of the warrior doesn't stand a chance against the way of the wife.

Ahhh, someone who sees it the way I did. I loved that movie intensely, but I agree that it can easily be viewed as boring if you approach it from the wrong perspective. Just the final "look" shared between the two of them made the whole movie worthwhile.

Not me many of my favorite movies are black and white. King Kong, Its a Wonderful Life, the Munsters (not a movie but one of favorite Television shows I watch constantly. Though I would prefer all of them in color.

Oh well, if you just like it better it's ok. Me, I'm just a person who likes to see the things how the artist made them. I couldn't watch colorized Hitchcock flicks for example. They work so much better in black and white for me.

How old are you, jimbo?

I'm thirteen, and colorizing ANY b/w movie is WRONG. They did that with a special version of some of the 'Twilight Zone' episodes.

I would never buy a pan-n-scan version of ANYTHING. The only 1.33:1 DVDs I own are either released in that format, are documentaries, or simply have no widescreen counterparts.

The original trilogy IS Star Wars. The SE is a rehash of it. I find it embarrasing to watch.

That's why I bought Laserdiscs.

My stance on revising fan edits.

First of all I have stated before I love widescreen. I am for improving movies but I don't see how cutting them up is an improvement. I want the whole movie. I love widescreen. Also I am 16 years old.

Well, you definitely score points in my book for being a widescreen advocate

If anyone's still interested the Bits has some more info on the DVD extra's:

We've got a little bit more Star Wars news for you this morning. Variety is reporting that producer Kevin Burns has been tapped to create the new feature-length documentary on the creation of the Star Wars films for the upcoming DVD release. Other such projects Burns has been involved in include the DVD documentaries Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood and Marilyn Monroe: The Final Days. Given that the set streets in (almost exactly) 6 months, Burns had better get busy. You know... I wonder if someone else wasn't already working on the documentary but fell out of favor, making Burns a replacement. That's just my own speculation, however I find it hard to believe that work wasn't already in progress before now, what with schedules being as tight as they are. It's either that, or Lucasfilm hired Burns months ago and is just announcing it now. Anyway, I imagine a lot of people will be curious to see what Burns comes up with. It's safe to say, there's a LOT riding on this release for fans.

Well I'm not exactly looking forward to the SE release, but that last bit of speculation on why the docs may be behind schedule is kinda interesting. No idea if there's any truth to it, but it does seem kinda close to the deadline to me. Could it even be a spat over whether the doc should emphasize the creation of the original OT (whose technicians and their work have been literally rubbed out) or the SE (stuff on the new CGI only)? I mean does anyone really still care about how the CGI 'improvements' to the SE were even made any more?

Yeah, wasn't that the cutest? I went to see it with a friend, and he went, "Damn, I thought he'd stay with her. I was hoping for a 'happy ever after', hmm."

Then I had to exlpain that that would have ruined the whole point of the movie : That often in life you meet someone who you immediately click with and who enriches your life forever, even though you hardly know them and they might be gone as quickly as they came.

But hey, we're getting off-topic here. *g*

Heres a quote from dvd.ign.com

Andy responds: My understanding is that it's the Special Edition from 1997 with further modifications. The CG that was added in 1997 will be improved, since a few of them were really not that good (Han and Jabba in the dock, for example), and in a rare sign of listening to his fanbase, Han will shoot first again.

I hope there right. With improved CGI and Han shooting first it wil be a version made for me.

i thought the ending was great...
i have to ask this of everyone...
what did you think Bill Murray said to her at the end?

To be honest with you, I don't even want to speculate on what he said. It kinda ruins the magic of the moment.

And back on topic... I went to Netflix and was able to put on reserve just the bonus features disc for the SW trilogy. I'm happy about that. Can see the features and don't need to buy the set.

Yeah, I have no idea what they said and to me it's one of those personal things that only have meaning to the people involved and I just don't want to intrude. I didn't think LIT was that good a film, but that last bit there made it for me.

That's good news Bossk. You can tell us if it's any good then when it comes out, although I think it'll be mostly SE stuff.

Thats cool. Thats Lord Peeler. One of the biggest problems with the 1997 Special Edition was the lack of such a change. That would have been one of my first changes if I was improving the trilogy.

Lord Peeler, I took a look @ Lord Peeler vs. the Fanboys. If this is your definition of fanboy, then I think nearly all of us here can heave a huge sigh of relief.

Thank God for that. I'm glad someone actually took the time to actually look at what I think a fanboy is rather than get all offended.

I think most Star Wars fans are cool. But the vocal minority tend to ruin it for the rest of us.

I do agree with that. It is not worth the life it steals from you and other people. (stress)

I mean there are Star Wars fans who think Darth Maul is totally better then Vader, and my hat's off to them because I respect opinions.

Also to jimbo, I am 15 and probably the closest in age as far as members here.
