There are aspects of the 1997 Special Edition (but not subsequent DVD/Blu-Ray alterations) that don't bother me at all, so a definitive Star Wars for me would have some but not all of these. Two exceptions would be Greedo not shooting at Han and keeping Sebastian Shaw as the ghost of Anakin. Does anybody else out there fall into this camp?

So what you want is semi specialized versions?

Originally the 1997 was supposed to just be the original first movie restored for its 20th anniversary aka Star Wars, with no added cgi whatsoever.  Then Lucas wanted to redo the effects, and was able to get Fox to pay for the whole trilogy restore and new effects as a test run for the prequels and he had not to pay a dime.

I think the project was initiated at first because when they looked at the state of the negative in 1994/95 they found it was so badly degraded they could lose everything if it was not saved.

For Star Wars being saved and FOX putting up the money makes total sense at the time as they still owned Star Wars 1977 and not Lucas.

The secret prequel deal has always been pretty much figured to be how Lucas got the original films rights back.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Semi-specialized versions yes, well put. With access to source material of decent quality I could and would do it myself, if only for my own personal viewing.

For any John Williams fans out there, some of the scenes where they used alternate musical cues or no music at all work very well with the original music Williams intended. A good example would be in "Empire" when the Hoth rescue team is flying over the landscape trying to reach Luke or Han. In every version of the film released they recycled music from later in the film. Of course it works fine, but I have to wonder why they felt the need to replace the original Williams cue, entitled "Rebels At Bay".

Well 1997 are my favourite versions. Apart from maybe Greedo thing, nothing really bothers me. It was in 2004 and 2011 that Lucas started to insert prequel parasites, which are unacceptable to me.

Ghost change was in 2004 not in 1997.

I tend not to mind the smaller/less noticeable changes done in the SE '97. It's the larger, more blatant ones I have a problem with.

I agree, and what you are describing sounds to me like Adywan's edit.

 To an extent, yes.

You can say I fall into that camp because that's exactly what i've done with my Semi-Specialised editions, kept all the good changes and removed all the bad ones. They can be found on tehparadox.

Han shooting first with no reply from Greedo? Done.

Jabba gone from Star Wars? Done.

Jedi Rocks replaced by Lapti Nek? Done.

Hayden Christenson and Jar Jar gone from Return of the Jedi, exiled to the darkest reaches of space? Done.

Lightsaber colours fixed and now consistent? Done.

And those are only the highlights. All the other poor changes have been removed as well, leaving you with essentially the Original Trilogy with updated special effects.

Very soon I will also be releasing newly regraded versions of these Semi-Specialised editions to match as closely as possible the look of the films as they were originally shown in the cinema.

I feel the same way. Perhaps not about every aspect.

I'd actually be interested in making a LOTR style extended cut that even adds in some of the deleted scenes. I'm obnoxious like that :P

All that said, I like the theatrical cuts the most. This hybrid idea would be more like a fun project.

Yeah, perhaps in the near future we will all get a version that is tailor-made for each individual or better yet a version that gets altered in a random fashion whenever you get the urge to watch it. Sigh... Lucas really did create a monster with his SE.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Haha that's what artistic innovation is all about! There will eventually be a version for everyone. Lucas started it with his own fan edits aka the SE.

Is it possible to make fan edits of your own work? (actually, that might technically be so; TESB and ROTJ were directed by others.)

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

That wouldn't be a "fan" edit though. To be a fan edit, it has to be edited by a fan, not a creator or owner of a work.

Ah you know what I mean. He made the version he wanted.

The special editions RUIN the rhythm of the films. Just check the butchering of ROTJ at the end. It was PERFECT. Why they chose to destroy this beautiful piece of film making is beyond me. And the Jabba's palace song change..WTF! In '97 I saw this in theaters and wanted to throw up. The original song Max Rebo plays- "Lapti Nek" sounded just like music you would hear in some other galaxy, now it just sounds like another lame 2000's CGI cartoon movie song. Star Wars is much too good for that. Why, George, why? Please stop hurting us.....
