What is that from?
You don’t recognize the white and nerdy fellow buying the tape? You only used two of his songs in your edits. 😉
Where were you in '77?
UHF?

Truly a Weird Al masterpiece.
If it’s any consolation to anyone, I only got 2.0 lossy DD audio, and my player weirdly scales the 720/24p up to 1080/60p and I can’t figure out how to fix that. I’m pretty amazed at what Harmy has accomplished, which makes me all the more ashamed.
I am appropriately ashamed. I saw an unboxing video on eBay and just kind of went off assumption from there. I should’ve known better. It just seemed the quickest way. Apologies.
It’s no consolation, but I will never do it again. I was ignorant, and went with what seemed the quickest option. I see now the error of my ways, and had I spent more time on the forums in the proper places, I’d have known better.
Probably no consolation at this point, but I’ll be sure to never again pay for a fan edit. Again, apologies.
Lesson learned, eh Mike? It’s really okay. The world won’t implode and I’m sure your actions will not call down the wrath of the god-mouse. Just ask for a little more help in the future and I’m sure someone will help you. Life goes on and we still want you around! 😃
I will ask for help in the future, and will also educate myself on some of the finer points of this stuff. I purchased a Blu-ray burner specifically for this purpose, but it’s a bit like a supercomputer in the hands of someone who doesn’t know how to operate a calculator; I’m more than a little out of my depth, which is why I made this foolish decision.
Mike O,
Having purchased one of these custom DSE box sets from eBay, do you (or anyone else) know if it gives you any additional options or leverage via eBay to report this as pirated material and get the profiteering piece of shit in proper trouble?
Or does everyone think this would end up putting the spotlight back on us with the material in question being a fan edit that originated from a member here?
.Val
That’s a good question. I could certainly point out where I purchased it and let Harmy know. It’s the least I can do for penance. A friend of mine, entirely on his own initiative and without any encouragement from me, also notified me that he purchased them from another eBay seller. I just don’t know if there’s any way of reporting them without getting the community into more trouble, assuming I haven’t already.
I understand the anxiety over downloading these things, but I don’t understand how having it in your eBay purchase history is any better…
It’s not. I just wasn’t thinking rationally.
Anxious people don’t always act rationally. Or even logically.
^This.
Heck, everyone thinks irrationally at times. Like right now, do you honestly think he had any other motive for buying in eBay? Does anyone think he is trying to bring in a lawsuit or get this site shut down? Obviously, it seemed easier and safer (whether true or not) than a trackable torrent. Mike’s a decent guy and I hate to see him getting ripped over what was obviously a mistake.
Thanks, man. That’s kind of you. If it’s any consolation to anyone here, I do feel appropriately ashamed, and have thoroughly learned my lesson and will make sure never to pay for a fan-edit ever again.

I believe Mike is sincere in his apology, so I’d better not find out anyone is giving him a hard time.

Man, I just can’t get over what Harmy managed to accomplish. The visuals are so stunning, though I do wish I could get the 24p to run. My player keeps upscaling it to 180/60p. The audio is only lossy 2.0 DD though. Whoever did this bootleg did pretty amazing work, they even stomped the discs. Seeing what Harmy accomplished, as I mentioned, made me feel worse than ever about contributing to any kind of threat to him, sadly 😦. But man oh man, does it look stunning. Thanks to everyone who’s been forgiving, and again, sincerest apologies. If it’s any consolation, which it’s not, this does make me look into other fan edits. Now if only I could find the audio preservation of the mono for Terminator 1, the rough cut of Apocalypse Now, and the theatrical cut of THX 1138. I’m kind of curious about that Ulysses Cut of Waterworld too. If nothing else, this has opened my eyes to the amazing things that home editing can accomplish. But I still hope I don’t get arrested 😉. And I still duly apologize.

I’ll go ahead and list the members here who’ve been arrested for downloading a fan edit:
That being said, I’m sure there’s a way to stop your player from changing the frame rate.

I don’t know, maybe it’s my latent Catholic guilt complex. I do just always worry about some kind of repercussions, not to mention that I’m essentially stealing.

I have a Sony BDP S3100 if that’s any help.

Some chipsets fail to upconvert 720p24 properly. My Oppo BDP-93 (Marvell Qdeo 88DE2750 chipset) used to upconvert to 1080p24, but then there was a firmware update to fix a colorspace bug and 720p24 now goes to 1080p60 just like yours. I’m afraid in my case the fix is a new player, since it’s long out of support. What’s more annoying to me is that the 480i NTSC decoding went to crap at the same time too, in a much worse way. So it’s very possible the hardware itself is at fault, but I don’t know your model specifically. If only HDMI supported 720p24, then you could just pass it as-is and let the display handle the upconversion. Argh.
Hey, I bought a set of TR47 discs from some guy something like 15 years ago now. I didn’t know either. Live and learn.
It’s only morally stealing if you don’t own the Blu rays. I don’t think God would consider it a sin to watch an alternate (unfortunately) version of a movie you have legally purchased and paid the price for. (Not making fun)

I’m not sure about that. There’s some sort of setting that runs SD DVDs at 24p, but I’m not sure it works. I know my HDMI can handle all the up to 1080/24, since that’s what all of my Blu-rays run. If it can do that, I assume that it can do 720/24p. It seems to do the scaling automatically. Maybe it’s my TV? Even when I plug in my old game consoles, even composite scales up to 1080/60p (or at least it says so).

I technically don’t own the Blu-rays just the VHS tapes. I used to have the old trilogy set on DVD, but sold it. But yeah, I get what you’re saying, I just hope Uncle Sam would see it that way if the copyright police ever showed up 😉. But listen, I’m the guy who feels bad for loading audiobooks on CD I get from the library into iTunes even though I always delete them immediately after I’m done with them. Maybe it’s a complex 😉.

720p24 isn’t part of the Blu-Ray spec, so it has to upscale it to 1080p24 otherwise all you’ll get is 720p60.

Well then that’s different. You’re a pirate and I just lost all sympathy I had for you over the backlash you got for buying a bootleg copy.
Blu-ray or not, downloading the edits discussed on this forum is still legally dubious.

I’m not talking about legally, downloading the edits without owning the blu-rays is morally dubious.
Yeah, “own the source material” is a pretty important rule around here…
So is "Don’t buy em."
So Mike, what kinda homework did you do to educate yourself on this issue?
I’m just very confused about how someone so worried about what they are doing could then do it all so wrong.
I’ll pick up the BDs when I go work tomorrow.

720p24 is part of the Blu-Ray spec, but is not part of the HDMI spec. Which is why you can have 720p24 on disc, but it’s never 720p24 by the time it reaches your set. It’s either 1080p24 (best), or something worse.
Oh, interesting. I didn’t realize that.
Is 25p a similar issue? I know almost all UK TV series (like Doctor Who) have to be 1080i50 on Blu because 25p isn’t doable. Which is why some of the sets (like the DW S1-4 upscales) are slowed down to 24p.

I believe 1080p25 is not in the Blu-ray spec, so that’s sort of the opposite problem.
