This is exactly one of things I don’t like about PCs: Unnecessary maintainment.

Are you calling proper water-cooling “unnecessary maintainment”?

Yes. Why should I have to care about water-cooling? It should just work.

(that’s maintenance, by the way)

Totally forgot. Thank you.

I thought you misspelled it because you were joking.

You watercool because when you overclock you generate more heat.

It does “just work” but if you watercool stuff, it works better.

Yeah, but I shouldn’t care if I want to overclock or not. I shouldn’t care about having to make sure every little level is perfect. I shouldn’t care about those things.

You… don’t have to? In fact you shouldn’t if you don’t know anything about it and beyond that you can’t unless you have the right parts. Standard users can just buy normal parts that will work out of the box just fine.

Overclocking is for enthusiasts to min/max with because they’re nuts (like me). It’s like having a tuner car or something. It’s not necessary and most people don’t, but you can if you want to.

JEDIT: Jesus dude, nobody is forced to overclock anything. It’s just something certain people like to do. Everything works perfectly fine without overclocking or watercooling.

I’ve never found overclocking and the such worth the effort for an increase in x that I probably wouldn’t notice and might cause extra stress/problems.

That is all.

Eh, it’s pretty safe these days and you can squeeze out enough performance to make it pretty worthwhile.

Not worth the effort for me. It’s probably even more hoops for a Mac, so I’d rather not.

Now this is all.

Pretty sure you can’t OC a Mac.

You might squeeze more performance out of it than buying a new one then. *winky joke face*

I’m using a six year old Mac right now and I’ve never felt it being slow. And, squeezing every bit of performance doesn’t seem that worth it to me. I like new shiny things.

This is close to being all, though that will probably in a couple of posts.

It really depends on what you’re using it for. Overclocking makes a big different if you’re gaming.

I’d like to see a Mac top this.

Just need to telnet to that address in Terminal for the Mac. Not that hard, pretty much every internet connected machine on this Earth can do that.

Yeah but PCs are affordable.

Just that the ones you’ll get will be terrible to use.

Yeah, much better to pay twice as much for the same parts so you can use a question mark in your filenames.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE FILENAMES!

And they’re not the same parts. I’ve used a lot of what people say the “affordable” PCs that use the “same parts” and they’re absolutely abhorrent to use.

OK, very tempting to call you a little whippersnapper right now. A computer is a tool, at least it is to those of us who make a living using them. Windows has its place, OS X has its place, Linux has its place, BSD has its place, Unix has its place. But it is lame/wrong to think one of these is perfect for all uses.

If only I knew how to use markdown I could get my point across better!

Some things are better designed than others. It’s not all opinion in everything, there is an amount of objectiveness.

(bringing this into the off-topic crap-fest where it belongs)

dude, you are not only wrong, but you are annoying while doing it. what do you even use computers for that you think your opinions matter in the slightest to others? In other words, why do i care that you love a mac and hate windows? if its just because you like the shiny, then please stop talking.

its a tool. tools are designed for a purpose.

if you are building a house, you probably have like, at least four different ways of hammering a nail into wood. pneumatic nail-gun, framing hammer, pneumatic finishing nail-gun, soft-face hammer. Probably more. don’t tell me about other hammers i forgot, take that to the “different types of hammers” thread that you are suddenly and compulsively tempted to create. The point is, if i ever met someone who said they built houses, but went on and on about how their soft-face hammer is the best because it never marks up the wood, i would know that they are not really building houses. they just like holding hammers.

if you are still reading, sorry for how harsh i am in this post (that is why this is off-topic right?) but i feel like you deserve it for creating this thread.

Ditto.

dude, you are not only wrong, but you are annoying while doing it. what do you even use computers for that you think your opinions matter in the slightest to others? In other words, why do i care that you love a mac and hate windows?

I care that things are worse. I believe that Windows makes choices

if its just because you like the shiny, then please stop talking.

Ha, no. This seems indicative of the “Apple brainwashes people” belief, which is blatantly false, as I have said before.

don’t tell me about other hammers i forgot, take that to the “different types of hammers” thread that you are suddenly and compulsively tempted to create.

I don’t even know much about hammers, much less create a thread about one. If I did create that thread because of you, I’d lobby the moderators to ban me permanently.

Also, people seem to forget that I’ve only created eight threads here. It’s not like I’m pooping them out every hour or something. I will admit (which I am pretty sure that I have done in the past, though don’t quote me on that) that at least a couple of my threads — Your Opinion on Me, * The “I’m Butthurt About Somebody Else’s Opinions/Posts/Whatever” Thread*, and Measurements Thread —- were a mistake. So I’d like to rid the ridiculous notion.

its a tool. tools are designed for a purpose.

if you are building a house, you probably have like, at least four different ways of hammering a nail into wood. pneumatic nail-gun, framing hammer, pneumatic finishing nail-gun, soft-face hammer.

OK, let’s continue with this tool analogy. There are different brands of general hammers — all of them strive to achieve the same purpose. Some do it better than others. That’s what this debate is about. Most consumer operating systems try to achieve the same goal, and some are provably better at achieving the goal than others.

Let me give you an example of the objectivity here: Let’s say you make a button that’s 1 pixel by 1 pixel. That’s objectively bad for user experience.

if you are still reading, sorry for how harsh i am in this post (that is why this is off-topic right?) but i feel like you deserve it for creating this thread.

Please don’t be sorry. I don’t need anybody feeling sorry for me. I don’t really care how “harsh” you are. I don’t take it personally.

Hey, Apple haters! Here’s a challenge: I prefer working from one system. I need a proper Unix (preferably POSIX-compliant) system for programming that is also capable of running film restoration software such as PFClean and audio restoration software such as iZotope RX 5 Advanced.

If anyone can provide a single non-Apple example of such a system I’ll switch.

FWIW, poita and I are happy users of Apple products that we use to directly contribute to projects here. I guess we’re both brainwashed idiots, right?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I am standing by the ‘its a tool’ statement because that is all there is to it. I don’t hate Apple, i don’t hate Microsoft. I do hate Fanboyism.

If the software you need is only available on one OS, then of course that is what you should use. why not?

If you work on lots of windows based business software, then you probably should be using Windows.

If you manage lots of linux servers, then maybe using linux is a better choice.

but as soon as you make statements about an OS that are not based on its utility to you, then i ignore you, because you are a fanboy.

and that is its utility to YOU. so don’t push your opinions on others.
