They made another God’s Not Dead film…

Another evangelical apologetics film attacking atheist caricatures? Yaaay.

I read a comment on youtube that made me laugh. It said something along the lines of “It took Christians over a century to respond to Nietzsche.”

And the first one stars Kevin Sorbo. That automatically declares failure.

Hey! Kevin Sorbo is amazing! When he has a fun character with a neat story.

The God’s Not Dead movies and plenty of other Christian films are one of the big reasons I hate the modern culture of Christianity. It’s a bunch of crap.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Capt. Dylan Hunt was a fun character. Andromeda had a neat story. Look what happened to both.

This. Give me C. S. Lewis anyday. He may not have been as theologically liberal as I prefer, but he was still a thoughtful, intelligent man.

C.S. Lewis was definitely liberal for his time.

I haven’t watched Andromeda yet, but I was talking about Hercules specifically.

Ah, well, I haven’t seen Hercules, so I’ll take your word for it. He should certainly steer clear of serious roles and subject matter, though.

I agree. Hercules is a cheesy comedic series with bad special effects. It was produced by Sam Raimi and his company, so of course it’s far from a serious adaptation of the myth.

So you’re saying that Kevin Sorbo should’ve played a reincarnated Jesus Christ in God’s Not Dead II?

I’d definitely see that film.

Church is usually alienating for me, but today was painfully so and I’m sinking into existential despair. There was a guest band selling CDs in the lobby, ignoring that Jesus would flip their table. Then there was a guest speaker (did the typical staff get lazy?) that preached that good people watch Fox News, don’t pay attention to “fake research,” though didn’t cite sources for his own “research,” and rambled about “true disciples” vs. “converts and cultural Christians whose kids and grandkids are going to hell.” The worst part is that my parents got super emotional listening to this man, and I feel like they’re about to take another sharp right turn if you know what I mean. I feel horribly trapped and scared.

Once you’re an adult you’ll rarely have to get roped into going to church again. You’re a writer, a for now write a story about hypocritical church goers. Make it a comedy, or a horror, or something like that. Then you can enjoy church on the level of looking for something to write about. Or do something else. Just find a way to tolerate it if you’re going to continue going.

Once you’re an adult

Well, legally, I am, but semantics. 😛

you’ll rarely have to get roped into going to church again.

I know, but I’m terrified of completely breaking my parents hearts. With the way my dad texts me long messages every morning filled not only with Bible verses, but Jesus fanfic, I know for a fact he’s going to constrantly ask me if I’m attending regularly, and probably expect me to be active in Baptist campus ministry or whatever, and probably hound me about that too.

You’re a writer, a for now write a story about hypocritical church goers. Make it a comedy, or a horror, or something like that. Then you can enjoy church on the level of looking for something to write about.

I’ve tried, and try again often, but I always write myself into corners and abandon stories frequently.

Plan a brief outline and force yourself to finish a story. Even if you think it sucks, finish it.

Sounds like you need to find a new church.

IMO the bind you’re in is exacerbated by proximity. If you were living (just coincidentally) on the exact opposite side of the frikkin planet, it’d be a lot easier to keep your life going one way and your family’s understanding of your life going another. Lots of people just assume things are going great unless they hear otherwise, so unless you say otherwise, their queries about your level of religious devotion will likely diminish, although it’s wishful thinking for them to go away entirely.

I happen to live pretty much on the opposite side of a major continent from my entire family. And I get along with my family just fine, and never actually had any particular need for the distance, it just happened. And it’s not bad. You? Maybe some distance would work for you even better.

Go west! Life is peaceful there
Go west! Lots of open air
Go west! To begin life new
Go west! This is what we’ll do

Yes. This. Living with your parents exacerbates the problem.
I do assert that your relationship with God is truly important, but your relationship with Him is between you and Him.

Regardless, your parents being overbearing is not healthy. It doesn’t matter what they are being overbearing about. You have your own life and must find your own way. They can not be responsible for making sure you live your life the way they would have you live it. You have to do it yourself. Their doing it for you will only drive a wedge between you, and ruin your experience of whatever it is they’re being controlling about.

If you were a child, that is one thing, but as you approach adulthood you have to back off from them and make decisions yourself, regardless of whether they agree with the choices you make. It’s unfortunate that they themselves are unaware of this.
