Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 96

Yoda burned down the tree to get Luke to stop romanticizing it. Luke missed the lesson Yoda tried to teach him day 1: focus on the here and now. Luke was so wrapped up in the ancient order and the mistake he made with Ben that he severed his connection to the force.

Why Yoda had not appeared before, I took it, was because look was disconnected from the Force. Once he went to the rock and reopened that connection, he and Yoda could speak again.

The frustrating thing about this film is it left me for the first time not caring about the next film. I know thats a personal experience.

They’ve still yet to make Ben a convincing foe for Rey or the Rebels. They’ve also still failed to have Rey earn anything in this trilogy. I still think that JJ will reveal that Rey IS a Skywalker and the main struggle in the 3rd film will be that she must decide whether to kill her brother/cousin or not. Otherwise, what’s the point? It is just random force user goes to kill evil force user she is already more powerful than.

I wish they had passed R2 off to Rey as she has no Droid and I want more R2 in my life. Again, personal choice…doesnt make it wrong decision.

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

was I hearing things or did Finn call someone a ‘bastard’ at the end? Sure, if you’re being pedantic it’s not a swear word…except, it actually is isnt it.

Yeah I heard it. That, a couple damns, and a “big ass door” from Poe. Still very mild, but I guess this is the most foul-mouthed SW flick to date.

Not counting all the times Artoo has cursed in binary. 😉

I’m curious what they’ll try to do with the last film more out of “what can they do from here?” than really wanting to see the characters evolve. I don’t have the same problems with Rey that others seem to, but I will admit that TLJ doesn’t leave a lot of doors open on character development for her.

Did Luke take his mechanical hand with him when he died?

Well most of his outfit too except the cloak. I guess that’s the way of things XD

I got to see it finally yesterday. It was very, very hard to not see spoilers, because they were everywhere on the internet, I mean everywhere I looked.

This thing has flaws, there’s no doubt about it, but I liked about 65% of the movie. Some of the jokes I could have done without, yes, some are funny, but some feel a bit out of place or awkward (Rose/Finn, I’m talking to you!)

I loved all the Luke/Rey, the Rey/Kylo scenes, but the Rose/Finn storyline wasn’t working. I understood where they were going with the material. I just think it was the location and characters I didn’t like.

STOP HERE Spoilers below

I didn’t like how Yoda looked in the very first scene, but as his scenes progressed, he looked better. Also, he didn’t look like Yoda from Episode VI, he looked a little thinner and not so old. I did love his scenes overall.

I loved Chewbacca and the Porg scene, as well as Luke on the Falcon and R2-D2 playing the princess’ message to Kenobi for Luke again. I also enjoyed C-3PO having more interaction and dialogue in this (the odds of successfully…are 15428 to 1)

I wasn’t expecting Snoke to get killed so easily, thought they were saving it for Episode IX.

Luke, WOW!, where do I begin. I loved his story arc, I wish he had actually been there on Crait, and to be honest, I thought after the barrage of fire he received he used a force shield of some kind. I was waiting for him to knock over all the FIRST ORDER stuff with a wave of his hand, but they went in a completely different direction. I actually thought when Kylo was going to strike him down, he would disappear as Obi-wan did, BOY, was I wrong. When I saw him levitating on that rock still on the island, I was shocked. I think I would have ended the film the moment he disappeared.

I didn’t like broom stick boy, I thought they should have ended it somewhere else.

I went into the movie spoiler free and I enjoyed the surprises when watching the film.

Rian Johnson did a good job, but you have to remember this, he cut over 40 minutes of footage out of this movie, some of the other stuff MIGHT make sense, had he left those scenes in. I can’t wait for the blu-ray so we can get a glimpse of some of those deleted scenes.

I’m very much looking forward to a fan edit of this once those scenes are available.

I must be the only one who liked the Casino scene. It sets up some galaxy world building, (perhaps) sets up a plot point for the next film, provides some relief from an otherwise downer of a film and reinforces the film’s overall theme of failure and learning from your mistakes.

On another note: I do wonder if scenes of Leia shot for this film won’t be used/reworked for the next one. They might have to be clever with what they have but it could be doable.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I know they have lots of deleted scenes, maybe they are going to see what they can do to incorporate Leia into the next film. I’m sure their not, based on what Rian and Kathleen Kennedy said, but you never know. I thought at one point they were based on Carrie Fisher’s brother stating it, and Lucasfilm denying it, so who knows.

I haven’t read up on exactly has been said, but the last thing I’d read is that they won’t use a CGI character like in Rogue One.

That doesn’t mean they won’t re use scenes. Perhaps even cutting her out of ep 8 locations and matting her into another, re ordering dialogue, etc.

You know the more I think about the end the more I like. I thought they’d have some stupid videogame type scene where Luke smashes the walkers or shoots back their energy. Instead it was more personal and supernatural.

I thought at first, Luke was going to knock the walkers over like toys. This would have worked well with what Luke said in The Empire Strikes Back, “I can’t, it’s too big.” and Yoda telling him, “Size matters not.”

Just a random suggestion I heard, but it’d be great in something like “The last ridiculous” if someone tried to make one: What if that’s not salt on Crait, but coke?

Just to be sure, there was a gag with a small drunken CGI creature putting coins in BB8, right? I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, and I want to make sure it wasn’t some sort of fever dream I had.

Yes, the pay off being when BB8 later weaponizes the coins.

I think what is throwing some people off is this movie goes against expectations. It was a huge gamble to go against the grain and go darker than ESB ever dreamed of being. The Rebels were on the run in ESB, but never did we see them decimated like this, literally down to one command ship and enough people to fit in the Falcon. And the last sliver of hope allies will come and save the day is met with radio silence. Things have never been this bad for the good guys.

Luke has felt the burden of being the hero of legend and a few seconds of fear and indecision has cost everyone dearly. We are light years from that night on Endor with our heroes surrounded by happy Ewoks.

I honestly don’t know where the next film will take us, because a lot of this felt like what should have been saved for it.

There is a power vacuum in the First Order now, and I doubt Kylo is going to be able to throw everyone who disagrees with him into a wall. Someone even worse than Snoke could be waiting in the wings seizing the opportunity to take control.

Don’t drag real life tragedies in here to excuse your poor taste in humor. Just don’t.

This is something I loved about TLJ, it didn’t take the middle movie safe route any more than ESB, and like you said, went even further. Can’t wait to see where Kylo goes from here.
