How can fans can do color correction correctly what George Lucas and Disney can’t
It still blows my mind
I notice that you can still see the detail in the red light to the left as well. Very nice.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)
Yes, the reds all have more detail, but I think that is also partially due to it not being 4:2:0 colour compressed.

I really like the extra width. Will you release it that way, as uncropped as possible?
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
The width varies from shot to shot, so it would look a bit weird as the frame would suddenly jump between filling the screen and not filling the screen from scene to scene.

Reel1 is on the share.
Again, if someone could check for missing frames, that would be awesome.

I plan on doing it but real life will prevent me from sitting down long enough for a few days. I will get to it though. Perhaps somebody will beat me to the punch!
Luke threw twice…maybe.
Here’s the R6 preview poita posted here along with the same scene from TN1’s upcoming “4K77” scan and also the SSE for anyone wanting to compare them:

Note of course that the TN1 samples have been colour corrected and digitally cleaned whereas poita’s scan hasn’t.

Not just that, but Lucasfilm paid Lowy Digital to digitally dustbust the DVD scan because it was very dirty. I don’t know what the standards were in 2002 (I think) when they scanned it, but if they did what poita does and get the film professionally cleaned first then they don’t have to do anywhere near the amount of digital work to remove the dirt.

For clarification, what should a person try to sync this to? The blu-ray? In the past I synced my 97se laserdisc projects to capablemetal’s files which were synced to the dts discs.
Also, was the 97se cropped and framed differently or was that only from 2004 forward? Just wondering.
EDIT: I’m not sure I have my terminology right here but if you have the Infrared channel would you share it for one of the accompanying files so that the community might play with automated dirt removal? I know I have a couple of ideas for using it as a mask in avisynth but just never have had access to the IR to attempt it.

The scans look amazing poita! So much better than the bluray. I’ve donated another 50 USD for the cause.
I Donated another $10 as well.

Althor, I’ll put some frames with the IR damage matte up on the share tonight.
As for Syncing, I’d sync it to the DTS theatrical discs I’d guess.
I don’t know about cropping framing vs 2004, I haven’t watched the SEs except when I saw them in the cinema, and now the scans. I have the DVDs and the Blu-ray box set, but have not watched them.

Okay, there are a pair of TIFF files on the share that have the IR damage matte in the alpha channel if you’d like to take a look.
Anyone who wants to know what an Infr Red damage matte looks like…
The top image is what the film frame looks like under infra red light, the film is completely transparent to infra red, so the only thing the camera picks up is any dust, dirt, hairs or damage on the film.
The bottom image is the film frame the IR matte is taken from.

There is another way.
Back in 2015, CapableMetal released on the ‘spleen x264 encodes of the SE 97 trilogy made from TB broadcasts along with his CinemaDTS sound mixes, in a DTS codec file, sync’d together. The x264 encodes are in 23.976fps and are among the best references for the Special Edition. For frame count, I’ve compared the encode with the Blu Ray (starting from the first frame of the SW logo-zoom-out through the final shot of the film where the medal ceremony shot makes an iris transition to the end credits) and I’ve discovered two shots with different frame amounts.
Both the encode and the Blu Ray have the same number of frames in all the remaining shots in the film (note that I’ve haven’t counted the length of the studio logos and the “long time ago…” display, all involve fades to/from black)
This is not to say that volunteers, here, who don’t have access to this x264 encode, shouldn’t use the Blu Ray as a reference to search for missing frames in the print-scan. You can. Just keep these two said shots with different frame counts in mind.

Many thanks Poita. I should be able to play around with this and make a script in avisynth that makes dirt removal a whole lot smarter. As long as you have the IR to use as a mask anyway. Dirt on top of motion will probably still be problematic but getting it to hone in on only dirt and not a laser bolt, for example, eliminates half the battle I suppose.
I haven’t used any professional dirt removal tools other than pfclean. Perhaps dirt removal isn’t that big of a problem like it used to be for guys like you with all the right tools.
Luke threw twice…maybe.
It is still a ton of work, but a little easier than it used to be.

Just to clarify Althor you are correct the 97 SE were cropped from the original 2:35:1 ratio as evident on the SE LD trilogy. Especially Star Wars. It was a tighter crop more likely to be 2:20. Watching these reels really shows the potential and what could be. Agree that once complete this will blow away the Blu ray.

I think the cropping was a mastering error exclusive to the Laserdiscs, nut the intended theatrical ratio.

Enjoy your time with Family, i am glad to see you taking time for yourself and for them.
in the meantime, i sent some more funds your way to help get another reel scanned 😄
Looks Awesome!! If you need any help to synchronise french translation in PCM and french subtitles, i’m yours!
Just sent some money your way. Really looking forward to this when it’s complete. Thanks for all your hard work!
