Agreed, the whole Antifa movement is IMO just crawling with the same anarchists who take over any protest for the past twenty years and make it into their own “Let’s smash some windows and burn something” event. Very unhelpful, but not that particular to the anti-Nazi protests either. But it is complicated by the fact that punching Nazis is, in theory, a very attractive proposition to most of the country, so they finally have a message that resonates a bit. There may be some sort of core legitimate Antifa movement, but at least from here they look outnumbered by anarchist jerkwads, and the non-organized aspect of it makes it pretty impossible to distinguish one from the other.

It also makes them kinda hard to reject by name, since they’ll just show up to smash windows and start fights under some other name (Were they called Antifa at the WTO? Nope). So IMO all the Left can do is reject the violence, and any individuals who get caught.

I think it could be argued that Antifa is technically leftist; they are, for the most part, Anarcho-Communists. That said, they aren’t leftists in the traditional sense, and they aren’t at all liberals.

Personally I don’t think Trump was that far off with the violence on “many sides” comment. Obviously most of the violence in Charlottesville was committed by the right (as far as I’m aware), but we shouldn’t allow Antifa to be painted as innocent, totally peaceful counter-protesters. They aren’t; and the longer it takes for the left to acknowledge the existence of Antifa; the more the misconception of their being left-wing is allowed to grow. The mainstream left needs to totally disavow Antifa and make it known that they anarchists first, leftists second.

I had heard of them, but didn’t really look into the differences between them and other activist groups like BLM until recently. The left wing media is doing a terrible job of educating the public on this issue, and the right wing media is in histrionics about how everyone on the left is basically Antifa.

Not being able to pay for Secret Service protection anymore: it’s a feature.

Trump has his own private bodyguards in addition to the Secret Service. If he taps out all of the Secret Service funding and they are no longer able to protect everyone in his circle, his people will then be able to move and meet freely without witnesses that haven’t sworn personal loyalty to Trump. That has in fact been the primary benefit of the Secret Service in the age of Trump – a cadre of nonpartisan witnesses always close at hand.

If I were Congress, I’d remove the annual pay caps and maybe provide extra people from the FBI or US Marshalls, since they’re likely going to need to be nearby eventually. But then I’m not Congress.

Some might find this famous (in Britain) story relevant to recent events. What is known as “The Battle of Cable Street”:

4th October 1936. Oswald Mosley’s B.U.F Party (British Union of Fascists) aka “The Blackshirts” decided to stage a march through the middle of London’s Jewish neighborhoods to intimidate them. They had a “permit” to march and therefore support from the Police, despite protests from the people of the East End. So the people took matters into their own hands, erected barricades, prevented them from marching and generally kicked the Nazis asses back out again.

It’s a celebrated event, commemorated with a stunning Mural. Well worth seeing if you are in London, I can assure you.

Cut to August 2017 and aggressively fighting back against Nazis is a bad thing? Because there is blame on both sides? I don’t think so.
