Non-scientific poll:

If you were the CEO of Twitter, would you ban Donald Trump off the service?

http://money.cnn.com/2017/07/02/technology/trump-twitter-cnn-wwe/index.html

Twitter says President Trump’s latest anti-media tweet doesn’t violate its rules.

Twitter told CNN on Sunday that the company reviewed the tweet, which features a WWE video that has been edited to show Trump beating up a man with a CNN logo on his face.

Twitter said it considered three factors: the political context of the conversation surrounding the tweet, the various ways it could be interpreted and the lack of details in the tweet itself.

According to its rules, Twitter may suspend an account for a number of reasons, including if the user makes violent threats; attacks people based on race, religion, gender and more; or engages “in the targeted abuse or harassment of others.”

I think that’s probably fine.

Horrible, and this isn’t even unique to Trump’s administration. Things like this have been happening for years now.

Here are some gems from the comment section:

Sounds made up.

Thats war. Innocents get killed. Too bad, don’t live close to a target.

It’s a war. Islamic extremists have declared war on the west and many of their own people and until they stop - or are stopped by the communities that harbour them - this will continue to happen until the entire region is a crater.

Wow. The levels of empathy are off the scale with this one.

Kennedy is likely retiring late 2018.

If this is true, we are fucked as a nation for the next 40 years at the minimum. His replacement will make John Roberts the new swing vote. Yeah, THAT John Roberts. The swing vote. Should Ginsburg retire as well, there will then be five reliable rubber stamp fascist votes, with absolutely no possibility of a swing vote. No more checks on Trump from that branch of government. The 2020 census could say Oklahoma has ten times the population of California and gets that many more representatives/electoral votes, and nobody could stop it.

Sorry, wrong thread? /doom

It’s Independence Day. A lot of people don’t like the direction the country is going. If you feel this way, is it appropriate to celebrate this holiday and feel proud of America?

Discuss.

Breaking news right here. President Trump has just tweeted out his Fourth of July message to the nation:

Хотелось бы пожелать всем американцам счастливого четвертого июля от сердца Владимира Путина! Сделайте Америку прекрасной.

You do what you feel you must. I certainly view the celebrating of the 4th of July to be quite different than stating agreement with the current administration. One of the things this country was founded on, was the right to disagree with those in power. I think you can celebrate this day and still not like the current people in power. I for one will not let Trump stop me from celebrating the 4th as I always have.

There is also this:

Here is what I have to say to that:

One can still celebrate the founding principles of America without condoning its current government.

exactly.

Remember, today we are celebrating an extreme act of defiance against the then current government.

CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

CNN tracks down someone’s personal information and threatens to release that information to the public unless he grovels at their feet and apologizes for daring to meme. If he does anything that CNN decides is ‘ugly behavior’—they dox him.

I’m apparently a social libertarian.

I’m farther on the left than I ever suspected. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry over this.

I thought “doxxing” was putting someone’s address, Social Security number, driver’s license and other private info out there. According to the article, they deduced who he was by things he said on Reddit, where he posted as “HanA**oleSolo”. The name speaks volumes.
If someone is going to play at being a racist a-hole online, don’t be surprised if somebody tries to out you.

Trump should really make his own material than retweeting crap posted on the internet. He seems to have plenty of free time for such endeavors.

The amount of people who apparently had nothing better to do on the fourth of July but tweet their spleens over this is pretty amazing.

Posting any personal information that the person hasn’t made public themselves; is doxxing, IMO. But even if it isn’t technically doxxing, it’s still not right.

If someone is going to play at being a racist a-hole online, don’t be surprised if somebody tries to out you.

I believe in the right to privacy, and that right is not forfeit just because someone may have shitty opinions. I am surprised with the unprofessional way CNN handled this, and with their massive overreaction to a silly Twitter GIF. I am not surprised that someone may have wanted to out him, but for it to be a major news outlet? And for that outlet to use that information as leverage against him?

This guy (who’s probably in his teens) was reveling in his 15 minutes of internet fame. He probably said something that gave himself away, and that led to his Facebook page. Which probably had all sorts of public information on it. Sherlock Holmes was not required to find this guy.

Is CNN really overreacting? Reporters have been threatened with violence at Trump campaign rallies. There is a climate of acceptability Trump has created where journalists are not human beings trying to do their jobs, but something less than. And this stupid immature video is another symptom of that.

Quote from the article.
"The Committee to Protect Journalists said in a statement this week that the tweet “undermines the work of the media in the U.S. and makes it more dangerous.” CNN said in a statement that the tweet “encourages violence against reporters.”

I was never more than a lowly journalism student in college writing for the school paper, but I never felt threatened in any way. My editor did get a threatening letter personally directed at them once, (over an opinion piece they wrote on gun control) and our professor called in the cops. I sure as heck would not want to be identified as a journalist in mixed company these days.

What does it say about the sub reddit he posted to that they have removed his apology?

Increasingly online life and offline life and going to merge into one thing. At what point do we stop treating them totally differently.

If the guy was standing on a street corner screaming hate speech at passers by (Like the Westboro asshats) then CNN would report it, name him and show his face on TV with no qualms (like they and all media outlets do all day long as a matter of standard practice). He does the same thing online and telling us about his horrible activities is “doxxing”?

People like him are going to have to accept sooner or later (hopefully sooner) that if saying something horrid to people in the street would cost you your job, your friends, your family and your anonymity… you shouldn’t say it online either.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

If you really care about doxxing, you should care about when it happens to people that are actually vulnerable, not some self-described asshole on Reddit.

This guy sounds like a piece of shit who only is sorry because he got caught. But with that said…

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

Aren’t they journalists? Make the decision based on what you think the principles of journalism require, not based on this guy meeting your demands. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to call this blackmail. “Do what we want or we release your information.”
