I get the CGI and disrespect complaints (even if I don’t necessarily agree) but what is the problem with the storytelling?
Tarkin is one of the best things about ANH and more Tarkin is not a bad thing.

I actually found the Tarkin CGI convincing after the first scene with him, but I found Leia’s CGI very distracting and unnatural.

this was my opinion as well when just watching rogue one. but when i decided to pop in Star Wars immediately after, my reaction upon seeing princess Leia in her first scene was “Huh, i guess she does look like that”.
I think the thing that takes everyone out of the movie, is seeing a ‘new’ movie, but with time-traveling actors. We tend to think of them as we most recently saw them, especially when we know the movie was just filmed.
For some reason I thought Tarkin looked good and Leia looked poor when I saw RO in the theater, and then the opposite when I watched the Blu.
Addendum: The first (and only) time I watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was on the home video-digital copy.
My Tarkin-related storytelling complaint is that Tarkin + Vader + Krennic is (at least) one main villain too many. It is narrative bloat for the sake of fan service. (Spider-man 3-esque) This might just be a taste thing but I prefer a more efficient sort of storytelling than that.
The relationship between Tarkin and Krennic is fun to watch just as is the relationship between Kylo Ren and Hux.
Vader is barely in the movie and the Krennic/Vader scene could have easily been cut down or removed.
I don’t have a problem with multiple villains.
multivitamins on the other hand
Yeah, Frink, I think this is a taste thing more than a “this is objectively right or wrong” thing. But the way I see it, you could have removed Vader from the film entirely and had Tarkin fill both roles (Krennic’s boss and the guy who Krennic is trying to one-up) or the other way 'round. It was an unnecessary complication to my mind to have both of 'em - and no doubt done to appeal to the fanbase. (Just one man’s opinion.)
Huh, I just realized we’re in a Han Solo movie thread…
Non-solo post.

I’m picturing a force-choking saber-weilding Tarkin, and it’s pretty funny.
Did you see Tarkin in R1? They’ve come a long way. I bet they could make a very convincing Jabba now.
Yes, I did see Tarkin in R1. And it was the moment when I stopped caring about that movie and very nearly gave up on the new continuity. Bad storytelling decision, awful CGI, disrespectful as hell to Peter Cushing.
Cushing’s estate gave their blessing.
Where were you in '77?
Cushing’s estate gave their blessing.
I know. Still feels just a tad ghoulish to me.
Isn’t being a tad goulish right in Cushing’s wheelhouse…?

The film crew’s T-Shirt is pretty lol, but I kind of don’t want the movie to be called “Solo.”

If that is the title, maybe some people will get confused and think of this movie. 😉
God I hope not. But if true also fuck them for still using the who shot first thing.

No, you are absolutely correct BMH. Krennic should have been the only villain in R1, plus Vader in the very last scene.
There was absolutely no need to have Tarkin in R1, not even the Death Star, which should have just been alluded to and remained an ominous threat off-screen.
But bad storytellers are gonna bad storytell. And the fans gotta have that fanservice and all.
Not sure why the Death Star should have remained off screen. It’s pretty relevant to the story, and it’s a part of ANH from the opening crawl. If anything, the Death Star in RO was a necessity so that it could have a grand introduction.
Tarkin, however, should have been relegated to cameo status, with Vader as a feared agent of the Empire who will just as soon kill rebel spies as interrogate them. What a cool movie it would have been if the Rebellion’s informants keep disappearing to this shadowy agent of evil, constantly threatening the mission as they barely keep a step ahead.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

The Rogue One thread is that a way. 😉

…We’re not laughing at that yet?

All these threads blend together after a while.

Just in regards to the desert planet talk - If it’s simply for a visit to Jabbas palace at one stage then that’s fine but if a large portion of the movie is set on a desert planet then I will be a bit disappointed, especially if it’s Tatooine as then what always felt like a big and open universe in Star Wars is going to start feeling very small and constricted. The OT did a great job on expanding the universe with each consecutive movie and the PTs even did a certain extent despite continually returning to Tatooine. The ST and other anthology movies need to keep doing this rather than rehashing old ground.

I’ve got more than just a bad feeling about this…
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are no longer directing the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off.
"Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm in a statement.
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
Lord and Miller, the helmers of The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street, signed on to direct the Star Wars stand-alone in July 2015. The film will star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, while Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover also star.
The film has been shooting in London since January. The release date of May 25, 2018, remains unchanged.
