4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 146

Maybe… it’s also possible the film was shown matted to 1.66:1 or 1.85:1 in theaters, then put on home video open matte but re-matted for the bluray. I know that has happened for some ray harryhausen films (laserdisc, VHS, and sometimes DVD were open matte but bluray was back to the theatrical matted AR).

10 years after Star Wars, the film Witches of Eastwick was released. What do those two have in common? Musical scores by John Williams. Believe it or not, Cher was the star of that film, which, of course, makes her the most obvious candidate to do a review of the original Star Wars in its unaltered form before its 4K UHD HDR 3D Blu-ray Digital VR release.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. But wouldn’t Cher be under an NDA? Well no, because REMEMBER she won an Oscar in 88 for Moonstruck, and, after last Sunday’s Best Picture kerfuffle with Moonlight, the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse Coopers, being in some deep shit, nullified all legal contracts. WHICH MEANS Cher’s NDA is up, but, she still needs to save face with Lucasfilm OBVIOUSLY because of her upcoming Sy Snootles anthology film (keep up, won’t you?).

So then how do we know all of this? HELLO of course she still wants fans to know what’s up, so she’s been sending coded signals for months via her Twitter account.

Just look at this tweet from February 2 (https://twitter.com/cher/status/827226043467456513):

FYI ARENA IS AMAZING.SO 🌬❄️
Rehearsed on Stage,Sang,Danced. I’m still Somewhat of a clod. New opening costume…You’ll need smelling salts 🤣

Okay let’s break this down. So we all know that “Arena” is referring to Season 1 Episode 18 of the original Star Trek. That’s not a coincidence. Notice how the word “original” is very similar to the word “original” in “original trilogy,” or how the word “Star” is very similar to the word “star” in “Star Wars.” Fascinating, right? She then says “Rehearsed on Stage,Sang,Danced.” I don’t know what that means. But THEN she says “I’m still Somewhat of a clod.” the word “still” meaning the same - as in same as in the 70s - and notice the capitalized “S” as in the capitalized “S” in “SE” which stands for “Special Edition”! The rest of the tweet of course refers to the new packaging and smellovision feature.

Now, stick with me here, because this one’s a doozy. On March 4, she tweeted this (https://twitter.com/cher/status/838273936848670720):

WATCHING 1ST STAR WARS IN THEATRE.SPECIAL EFFECTS OLD,BUT ❤️IT.REMINDS ME OF 1st TIME. HANS,CHEWY,LUKE,OLD BEN,
👑LEIA,DARTH VADER,HYPERSPACE

Don’t let the caps lock distract you, she specifically mentions the words “watching” and “old.” Put these two words together - “watching old.” Watching old what Cher? Could it be an old movie? Could it maybe even be gasp Star Wars?

I guess we’ll all find out when she shows up at Celebration.

I did a quick check of sold listings on Ebay. The GOUT Trilogy goes for about $75 on average, oftentimes more. There is demand, and you can’t pretend that its just hardcore fans. Each round of changes alienated and pissed off more and more people. Almost makes me wish Lucas had gotten to another revision- almost.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

At least they’re cheaper than VHS copies of Beauty and the Beast. 😉

I got the trilogy for about $45 total from 2 different used video stores a few years back. I can only imagine that they’ve gotten harder to come by as time has gone on.

Funny I was just watching my GOUT DVD of ESB today. If theyre really going for those prices these days maybe I’ll start critcizing them less.

It’s a bad joke that it has come to this… It needs sorting out if anything release a Remastered DVD and wait for the 4K UHD punch up bell to ring or a knockout either way. That fight very close to finishing.

I got mine for about £15.00 about 3 years ago.

I got mine when the 2011 Blu-Rays came out. I picked Empire up from a used video place, Star Wars used and Jedi new from FYE.

That same FYE is closing and when I last went in had tons of the 2015 steelbooks brand new. Almost considered ROTS- but picked up Adele on vinyl instead.

Do most blu ray players have the ability to “zoom” non anamorphic discs these days? I know Panasonic models do.

will automatically zoom correctly flagged non-anamorphic DVDs. However, it will not zoom non-anamorphic DVDs that aren’t flagged as such.

There is a such a thing as a non anamorphic flag? I could see that causing problems if a 1.37 film was authored incorrectly. I have go into zoom manually.

It doesn’t. Amazon is using the wrong photo.

There were multiple store exclusives. Wal Mart had them packed with reprints of the Marvel adaptations.

I remember seeing sets like that in WalMart back around '06/'07, but instead of comics/books bundled, it was action figures. Still kicking myself I never got them (I was young, but they were cheap)

Amazon is using the correct photo in the link Frink posted. It’s the 2008 reissue barely anyone remembers. For the OT it was the two-disc GOUT sets (even though they had said December 31, 2006 was the last day the GOUT would be retailing). They also reissued the two-disc prequel releases in a trilogy pack as well. They both used those “ultra-slim-plastic-cases-in-a-thin-cardboard-box” packaging, the kind you would see season sets of tv series in sometimes.

I think this was the final repackaging of the OT and PT dvds until the blu-ray three years later.

I didn’t know that set had the GOUT. I thought the only time those DVDs were released in one package was the rare Best Buy tin.

I have the tin case set. Anyways as Fang confirmed yes that set does have the GOUT sets just in slimmer cases and would be the final time, along with the PT, the SW films were in a DVD only set.

Quick question. The DVDs that accompanied the 2013 BD reissues. Are those new DVDs based off the 2011 BDs or just the 2004 DVDs repackaged??

I remember reading confirmation somewhere that they are indeed the 2011 versions.

I’m glad I bought the tin box set of the GOUT trilogy and the Ewok movies 10 years ago, they’re going for ridicilous money considering what’s inside.

I was under the impression the DVD’s were just 2004 because who would notice?* Interesting.

I mean, unless they had leftovers just sitting around, why would they not use the new master?

And I imagine with the number of times the 04 disks were reissued, there weren’t many left by 2013.

I would imagine they would have just kept pressing the same '04 DVDs since it would likely cost less than designing and pressing brand new discs for something thats only minorly different from the previous DVD releases. I guess not.

Yeah, but for the prequels you’d have slightly different color timing on TPM (not to mention filmic anomolies like wobble, dirt and dust, and also slightly tighter framing) and significantly different color timing on AotC.
