STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread — Page 59

Boy that episode was really good. Sabine has gone from the character I was probably most iffy about to one of my favorites.

I’ve actually been watching through the series again with a couple friends (after finishing out The Clone Wars with them) and Sabine was kind of a non-entity for a long time in the early series, but as of these last two episodes especially, she’s had one of the most interesting arcs out of everyone so far.

I really like the design of the traditional Mandalorians in this, and Sabine with a lightsaber made sense for the plot and with her Darksaber training (but who taught Saxon?). I also thought it was interesting to hear Saxon referred to as the Emperor’s Hand, which is yet another Zahn element we’re seeing make a comeback. It will be interesting to see where they go with that. I was interested to learn more about Mandalorian history and customs, what’s been happening since the Clone Wars, Sabine’s family was interesting (even if they simplified the whole “I don’t like you, oh wait now we’re all friends again” storyline a bit, but in a 22-minute show I’ll let that go), Fenn Rau is actually really cool, and I was honestly surprised that Sabine stayed behind at the end, as well.

I think the biggest success here is taking something that’s become a huge over-the-top silly fan thing and doing it justice without making it feel like fanservice. It’s a good plot, it makes sense within the story, it serves the characters well, but it doesn’t dip into the territory of crazy Mary-Sueing or Gary-Stuing or fanservice or whatever you want to call it (for me, at least). I could have done without the goofy Karen Traviss Mandalorian language, but this was otherwise a fantastic episode and I can’t wait to see where Sabine goes from here.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Gar Saxon was one of Maul’s Super Commandos.

Gar Saxon is an awesome name. Very Beowulf.

Yeah, I like the different tribal feel the Mandalorians have. Saxon is obviously from a more Germanic breed.

Am I really the only one who doesn’t give a dlying duck about Mandalorians? The Mandalorian episodes were the most boring ones on Clone Wars and now they’re doing them on Rebels 😦 But at least the ending was something I didn’t expect.

I’m with you, anything about Mandalore puts me to sleep. Proud warrior races in general are one of the dullest things in fiction, IMO. The only thing I’ve ever found interesting about the various Mandalorian arcs that Rebels and TCW have done was the sexual tension between Obi-Wan and Satine. Ever since she died, all it is is a bunch of interchangeable jerks yammering on endlessly about honor.

At least the Sontarans are creepy/funny.

I’ve really liked the last couple of episodes. Looks like we’re leaning into Rogue One with this last one. Once R1 comes out on Blu, I’m hoping we can do a comparison to see if this fleet is the exact fleet at Scarif.

Well I’m sure that the Flurry type carrier isn’t at Scarif (I forget what they call that ship in the new canon, but that design was lifted straight from Legends). Pablo Hidalgo says in this week’s recap video that most but not all of the ships from the end of this episode are in Rogue One, and that he just figures that the ships missing from the film are undergoing refits or repairs at the time and aren’t battle-ready.

I think it’s funny how Kevin Kiner keeps ripping on JW’s other work. In the past we’ve gotten plays on themes from Raiders, Jaws, E.T., and probably a couple more I missed/forgot. This week there was some Jurassic Park.

I don’t really mind it.

Yeah, I kinda love it honestly.

Hera’s line about not moving was lifted right out of… one of those Jurassic Park movies, too.

Home One was at the end and isn’t at Scariff either. Maybe we will see Admiral Raddus in season 4. Or Ackbar.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I finally caught up on this last night, man that made my heart warm to see the rebel fleet show up! hard to believe they can fit in another whole season… 😃

Still plenty to do before Scarif. I’m just interested to see how the Jedi are dispatched. It’s going to be hard to explain how Luke is special if there’s a grown-up Padawan & his Padawan who just left.

Yes, that will certainly be interesting to see how they handle it. having cool Jedi around that the Rebels are aware of (and even Princess Leia to some extent - she did meet them in Season 2 right?) certainly make some behavior in the OT seem like they suffered from mass amnesia.

Now that I think about it, no one seems to care he’s a Jedi. Only Yoda is like “when gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be”. Mon Mothma & Bail Organa seem pretty chill about him having a Jedi friend in R1. The only other time anyone really mentions it is when Han says Luke is having delusions of grandeur.

Yeah I don’t know where the mass amnesia would come in. Han’s really the only one that dismisses the concept.

hm. interesting thoughts. so Jedi are like the nerds of the galaxy. they think they are smart and great and all that. meanwhile everyone else just ignores them and gets shit done without any need of the Jedi. hm. 😃

I figured that they were just too absentminded/incompetent to actually show up on time to a rendezvous, and every time they participate in a covert operation they inevitably blow their cover by drawing the attention of a Sith lord. Seriously, this happens in 3/3 of the original movies. Jedi are not worth the hassle in a secret Rebellion.
