I had heared about this the other day and decided to look into, I cringed at what I read. set a few years before the five year mission, and will focus on quote "he lead character - who will be female, and likely either black or Hispanic - will be “on a journey that’s going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy”.

SO It’s a political correctness PREQUEL???!!! will they ever learn? who would want to watch that?

So, because the lead will be a female and not white you’ve lost any interest?
What an ugly idiot you are.

The fact that it’s a prequel to the original show and will have a Klingon Captain confuses me greatly. It seems like this is going to be one of those “Look how progressive we are!” patting-themselves-on-the-back kind of deals, like early TNG. We’ll see…

I wish the original thread was left open as was going to discuss the difficulty of gauging the sound of things in outer space.

But what about this?

“he lead character - who will be female”

The funny thing is that the original quote actually spells “the” right. Maybe this was some kind of weird slip.

Ok, sorry. You know I love ya, Wook. 😃

JEDIT: that smiley looks like it’s saying “BLUH!”… it seems to imply sarcasm and that is not my intent.

Yeah, I know. And the current emoticons suck. (And they’re freaking tiny.) AOL had better ones 15 years ago. 😉

It’s not as much fun. Rubbish threads are like old cardboard boxes. You can bin them or you can turn them into giant robots that conquer the universe. This is a good thread with humpbacks.

All I meant to say about star trek discovery is that the combination of learning to get along with aliens and sounded to be an overdone theme with the same tired politcally correct tint that plagued the last few series. The last star trek prequel show was a flop, should we really try that again? I didn’t think it sounded like a good idea. Hopefully they wont make it too in you face, like how they did with farscape, which I liked, yeah people who hated eachother when they met ended up getting along in the end more or less. Race and gender has nothing to do with it.

Isn’t learning to get along with aliens sort of the whole point of Star Trek? Diversity too?

Star Trek has always been “politically correct.”

Author

because the wording they used made me think it’s going to be the main focus of the show. all those things are fine, in themselves if not overdone.

Lol, I was just thinking about that TNG episode.

good point, i don’t think it was politically correct unil the TNG and later era, another one would be the money issue and it’s potentially communist implications, Gene would never have been able to pull that off when star trek was invented in the sixties during the cold war environment.

Telling awesome stories involving diverse casts of humans and aliens alike that involve cooperation isn’t what political correctness is anyway. Political correctness is the ridiculous censorship and avoidance of facts and words that might be considered offensive. Now everyone thinks that anything involving a moderately diverse cast is “political correctness”.

Female/black leads and diverse casts have been considered politically correct for decades. The only difference is political correctness is more controversial than it was in the 90s, probably because some shows (Voyager included) neglected quality stories and the only thing going for them was being politically correct. So now the idea is if a show is overtly-politically-correct, the storytelling will suffer for it. Problem is, a lot of the time, it’s true.

Even the TNG cast have disowned that stinker. I think Wil Wheaton mocks it in his con appearancesshow as an example of a Trek episode going horribly wrong.

Enterprise being a “flop” is somewhat complicated. UPN didn’t even have affiliates in some key U.S. markets. (The network went belly up a year after the series ended.) Many people I knew were downloading satellite rips of the show just to be able to see it, and such online viewing habits were not factored into viewer figures in the early 2000’s.
Arguably, more people have seen the show when it was in reruns on the Sci Fi channel than during it’s original run.

What about the one where it’s a planet dominated by women that oppress men? I know that one gets a lot of flak for supposedly being offensive. I don’t think it’s offensive but it was really boring and not profound or worth watching at all.

Angel One, yeah that’s another episode the cast would probably like to see lost in a vault fire.

I find it amusing that Doctor Who almost did a story about a female dominated society during Patrick Troughton’s tenure in the late '60’s. Can’t recall why they never went into production with that script, but they probably dodged a bullet in any case.
