Admin note:

For some history on the matter, feel free to peruse the original, long-running Politics thread:

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Politics/id/2888/page/1

Grab some popcorn and read the last ~100 pages for some great examples on how not to debate politics. The mods felt it was best to start fresh after all the vitriol and personal attacks that occurred there. New year, new rules, new thread. Keep it civil, please.

There are also many pages before that last 100 pages that are great examples of how to debate politics(and yes there are also plenty of examples before the last 100 pages of how not to debate politics). Many times we were at each others’ throats and flaming and insulting each other like crazy. Sometimes friendships ended and sometimes the friendships were able to be mended. There also many times of great intelligent debate. I learned a lot in that thread. I learned a lot about various issues. I learned a lot about different kinds of people. I learned a lot about those on the opposite side of the aisle from me. I made friends there. It was my favorite thread on the forum. Now it is closed. I think something great has been lost on the forum, and somehow I don’t think this new thread will be able to fill the void. No one else may care and others may celebrate the Politics thread’s demise. But I do care. I think it is a shame that this has happened. I also see no reason for this to have happened. I see absolutely no reason why the new forum rules couldn’t have been enforced in that thread, along with the original rules in the first post of that thread. I think it would have worked just fine. I think it was a mistake to close that thread. I think closing threads and punishing everyone instead of disciplining the individuals responsible is wrong(and yes I realize that some think I may be one of those individuals). But, there is nothing that I can do about any of this. I deeply regret that the politics thread is closed. I shall miss it.
