Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 62

  4. Rogue One
  5. Return of The Jedi

  7. The Phantom Menace
  8. Attack of The Clones

I can’t believe I live in a world in which there are enough good Star Wars films that I can have ROTJ be 5TH on my list. That’s pretty mind blowing.

Yeah, I’m having that same dilemma. I feel like I should be ranking Return of the Jedi higher than I do… but the facts are there.

My New Order (eesh, that came out weird…):
I. Star Wars
II. The Empire Strikes Back
III. Rogue One
IV. Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens
V. Revenge of the Sith
VI. The Phantom Menace (which I think should be retroactively made an Anthology film)
VII. Attack of the Clones

On one hand I feel like it’s a bit early to give a final verdict on Rogue One given how I’ve only seen it once, and it hasn’t even been a week… but meh. I’ll try anyway.

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars/A New Hope
  3. Rogue One
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. The Force Awakens
  6. Revenge of the Sith
  7. The Phantom Menace
  8. Attack of the Clones

I feel like Rogue One kinda beats TFA by default simply because it’s something new, and while I like Jedi it has a bit too many obvious pacing- and tone problems for me to consider it among the absolute best. So yeah, my feelings might change down the line but for now, I consider Rogue One the best SW movie since Empire.

I won’t rank R1 against the saga films, because it’s basically an EU story; not because of the canon/legends, but because of the purpose the story serves. It’s a very good EU story, I think, but ranking it against the saga would be like ranking the Zahn Thrawn Trilogy against the OT.

Yeah, I can’t take that guy seriously anymore.

Has he given Jyn Erso a silly nickname yet?

Ranking the theatrical releases of each film:

The Empire Strikes Back: 10/10
STAR WARS: 10/10
The Force Awakens 9/10
Rogue One: 8.5/10
Return of the Jedi 8/10
Revenge of the Sit: 7/10
The Phantom Menace: 5/10
Attack of the Clones: 3/10

When it comes to comparing The Force Awakens and Rogue One, it comes down to the characters. Rogue One has superior action and a more original story but Force Awakens has such endearing characters. Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren are just amazing characters who I fell in love with and learned a surprisingly amount about (Rey and Finn, specifically). In Rogue One, I found Cassian and K2SO to be the only characters who could even compete with what Force Awakens gave me. I know a lot of people disliked Cassian, but I really appreciated his arc. Overall, I am VERY satisfied with what Disney has done so far. I will be there opening night for episode 8 with much excitement 😃

It’s funny how we share the same ranking and the same grades, at the exception of the Disney “body snatcher” era. That’s really what bugs me. I don’t know what’s going on with this Rogue One madness. I can even understand the buzz for episode 7 which has a few good things (and a marvellous Williams score; especially compared to the flat Giacchino’s effort), but R1 is such a mess I couldn’t even find one good point. I wonder what you will really think of it in a few years when the hype is down, when you’re older. Anyway, you’re lucky to love it.

edit: oh you’ve answered to me on the R1 topic. Well, your a nice guy Darth. That refreshing not getting insulted for not loving a movie.

Swap ROTS with TPM and (maybe) SW with ESB and that’s my ranking and reaction exactly.

I saw a snippet of the whole “No, it’s because I’m so in love with you” scene and I’m starting to regret putting ROTS > TPM

Nicely said man! I think they should have cut out Magic Stick Man and the other two lesser characters and just focused on Cassian, Jyn and K2S0. Not only would their dynamic be stronger it would also give these characters more time to be fleshed out. We could have walked away with a Jyn and Cassian that are as layered as Rey and Kylo. This is a sad turn of events because I want to like Rogue One a lot more than I do but I mostly watch Star Wars for the characters and that isn’t on point there is a threshold of enjoyment I can’t cross.

While TFA copied the story of 40 years old film. So yes, explaining that 1 minute in detail is much newer.

Well the truth is constant, my friend.

Anyway, his “nope” without arguments reply deserved the exact response it got.
