kk650's Regraded Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi V3 (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray) (Released)
Time

A few of you felt that the V2 regrade of The Last Jedi felt a little cold in comparison to the blu-ray so with this V3 release I have removed less yellow, giving the film a nice warmer feeling overall.

A 23GB version of the Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi V3 release which includes the Atmos 7.1 audio track from the 4K Ultra-HD blu-ray is now available at two new places where the_magicman is uploading all my releases. The Last Jedi regrade - One LUT to rule them all... (Released)
Time

I am personally seeing a red tinted lightsaber core and red tinted snow/salt/whatever that planetā€™s covered with. As JawsTDS said, the starfield also looks red tinted, though that may be just for that shot.

Dre, if you didnā€™t add red yourself, you most likely increased the saturation too much. The colours would look nicer and more balanced if you reduced the saturation IMHO. I prefer your V1 regrade settings.

I agree with ya towne32 entirely. The indoor scenes suffer a lot from the second LUT, but I actually havenā€™t tried using the boosted contrast on the space scenes, so I think I will give that a shot and see how they work.

darthrush, can I ask that any further talk of DrDreā€™s LUTs be taken elsewhere? This thread is supposed to be about my regrades of The Last Jedi, not the regrades of others.

DrDre, as always I appreciate the feedback but please donā€™t post any more LUTs in my release threads in future, it leads to them getting derailed. You should create threads of your own for your LUTs.

The first LUT makes for a gorgeous image. The second goes too far in many places from what I saw. The biggest issue is the crushed blacks throughout. But we got the first LUT which is a perfect correction in my opinion! And yeah, a new thread is probably a good idea if the discussion goes further.

Yep. Unlike the yellow, I do think the contrast needs shot by shot adjustment (or else just settling for the way it is). Iā€™ve watched the UHD, and some parts, particularly indoor scenes, have excellent contrast.

The space shots all look like theyā€™re being viewed from behind glass, like from a cockpit or something. The starfields are, obviously, not black and it seemed like there is a bit of a reflective haze (just lens flair?) associated with laser blasts and such. The look seems to be intentional, but indeed different from all of the previous films.

In terms of comparing it to how things looked in the theater, I think itā€™s probably not possible to make a good comparison about projected black levels vs. television. But the colors, whether we like them or not, seem to me absolutely what I saw on the big screen several times.

I pretty much agree with this assessment. I donā€™t feel like there is need to increase contrast here, unlike my Rogue One regrade where I felt the blu-ray had a bit of a flat feeling so I boosted the contrast.

I personally didnā€™t get that flat feeling from the blu-ray of The Last Jedi so iā€™m leaving the contrast the same for V3.

Secondly - I was wrong, KK650. The yellow tint does seem to be applied evenly across the film based on what Dre is saying. I donā€™t get how applying a single setting on the top of a 2.5hr film is in any way what a professional in the industry should get paid for doing. shrug

Thereā€™s a lot more that goes into professionally grading a film than that.

Of course but it doesnā€™t change the fact that after all the scenes have been selectively colour graded, a final blanket tint is added over the whole film for many many releases these days. Like towne32 I donā€™t understand why they do it. Why do all the work selectively colour grading each scene just to add a blanket yellow/green tint to the whole film at the end that just makes everything look yellow/green, I just donā€™t get it.

Yeah, that there is a single blanket yellow tint applied evenly across the whole film, I think is pretty undeniable, though how strong that blanket tint is can certainly be debated, as in this case.

Thank you for the detailed feedback DrDre!

Youā€™ve all convinced me to give this another go. Iā€™ll be creating a V3 release that will be around halfway between my V2 release and the blu-ray in terms of the amount of yellow. Iā€™ve worked out the settings for V3 and it is actually very close to what DrDreā€™s regrade screencaps look like. Hopefully you guys that feel that too much yellow was removed with the V2 release will prefer the balance of this V3 release.

kk650's Regraded Justice League V2 (2017) (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray) (Released)
Time

Thanks Ccooluke for the kind words, I think The Last Jedi looks great as well, much better than the blu-ray, but once you get into regrading, you quickly learn that colour preferences are very subjective and its impossible to please everyone, so the only way to not go mad is to make sure that you as the releaser are happy with what youā€™ve done.

As for Justice League, iā€™ve checked and Iā€™m certain I removed the correct amount of blanket yellow tint here. For this V2 release I purposefully chose parts of the film that leaned towards blue after the blanket yellow tint as been removed to show how reducing the saturation compared to the punchier first release gives the blue tinted scenes a more natural filmic look. With the first release, I went for a punchier more colorful look like my Man of Steel, Wonder Woman and Batman V Superman regrades, with this V2 release I went for a more natural subdued look.

I like having the option of putting out more than one version like I did with Blade Runner 2049 but I donā€™t really want to be doing more than 2 versions of one film at one time. That means that in future I can return and create a new version but at one time, 2 versions are enough IMHO.

Okay guys, I checked that shot with the snow fox from the screencaps and the blanket yellow tint is exactly the same in that shot as well.

As far as I can tell, iā€™ve removed the blanket yellow tint completely in that snow shot as well, so it matches the amount of the blanket yellow tint in the scene with Ray handing over the lightsaber to Luke and the final lightsaber scene.

I can see why some of you guys would like the more stylistic grading of the blu-ray but I feel like it is a big departure from the look of the other 8 Star Wars films. This film is very much a departure from the other Star Wars films in terms of its storytelling so I can see how it would fit here but I personally prefer maintaining visual continuety with the other Star Wars films as much as possible, even if the style of storytelling is quite different.

Could you post some screenshots from the regraded scene with Rey handing Luke the saber? I need to end up marching that footage with the overcast colors from TFA and this sounds like something along those lines.

After the blanket yellow tint is removed from The Last Jedi, it doesnā€™t look overcast like it did when they shot the scene in The Force Awakens so its unlikely to help in terms of maintaining continuety. Iā€™m pretty certain they reshot the scene again for The Last Jedi and the lighting conditions seem to have been pretty different.

Hereā€™s a screencap comparison between the blu-ray and this regrade from that scene:

And I have to say, that first shot looks so green screenā€¦ When I watched the final ā€œduelā€ for the second time, them standing on the desert looked so fake I couldnā€™t believe. There was no feel of vastness or space at all.

I have to admit that that is something iā€™ve noticed myself from time to time with certain CGI heavy films, removing blanket tints does seem to draw more attention to green screen backgrounds when they havenā€™t been particularly well integrated with the characters themselves.

I think itā€™s unlikely that the grading simply had one blanket yellowish setting added over the top of it, even if some find it too yellow in general. It would probably need a careful shot by shot adjustment.

A couple look more natural (if that makes them better or worse is a personal choice. I donā€™t believe films need to be stripped of their color timing decisions to look good). But, some shots have indeed become blue enough that Iā€™m sure the blue would fanedited away if it was released that way.

I personally really like how this regrade looks and think its a big improvement over the blu-ray, but that is definately possible, that different scenes have had different amounts of blanket yellow tint added. I predominantly used the scene where Ray gives the lightsaber to Luke at the beginning and the lightsaber fight at the end to work out how much of the blanket yellow tint needed removing to bring the other colours back to life. I didnā€™t test any other scenes.

Its definately possible that other scenes may have had a less strong blanket yellow tint added. I personally do not think that is the case with the snow scenes though, I think those scenes were selectively graded to look bluer and colder before a yellow blanket tint was added across the whole film in a final pass.

I will test specifically that shot from the screencaps with the snow fox to see whether a different amount of yellow was added there and get back to you all.

Hmm, as far as 2 and 4 are concerned, I find the yellow snow and green sky on the blu-ray pretty questionable myself, I personally feel the colours in those scenes look much better after the strong blanket yellow tint has been removed.

I think 1 especially is a big improvement, the blue of the lightsaber and the core in particular look so much better on the regrade IMHO, hot like the lightsaber cores in the other Star Wars films.

5 is the only shot from the blu-ray shots where I donā€™t consider the regrade a big improvement, both shots look good colourwise, the regrade looks more natural but the blu-ray shot looks good as well.

The Terminator - Color Regrade [No Longer Available]
Time

Yeah, Iā€™m the first to admit that recreating the look of theatrical prints is not really my thing, all the scans of film prints iā€™ve seen have had the colours way too muted for my taste, the Jurassic Park scan comes to mind for instance, I found the colours on that to be too flat and desaturated for my liking.

That said, Terminator is of course a very different film to Jurassic Park and this muted/faded look does fit it better. I like where youā€™re going with this and look forward to checking out the finished release.

Itā€™s difficult to judge without seeing it in motion. From just the screencaps, the colours seem muted, especially compared to my own Terminator regrade, though that is not necessarily a bad thing. Its certainly a distinctive look but I do like what iā€™m seeing, I would have to see the whole film in motion with this colour grading to make any further judgement.
