recast the prequels
Time

C3PX, I can't believe you hate the Matrix movies that much. I know a lot of people really hate the sequels, but generally liked the first one. I feel bad because I've always seen you as a friend and "one of the good guys" here at ot.com.

Now I must destroy you.

Actually, can you just tell me whether you liked the first Matrix before seeing the sequels? Because, if association has brought your opinion down, I can totally dig that.

And as far as recasting goes, I would be curious to see Haley Joel Osment as a 1999 Anakin (as long as the character has to be 9). Can't see that through to the end, but the kid had range.

And Michael Biehn for the win! Star Wars could have used the Biehn.

TPM: A Decade Later
Time

I was raised on Star Wars and had seen all of the movies tons. I had lots of toys and model kits, all the books... I was a huge Star Wars fan. I knew in the early 90's that "there was always supposed to (and therefore going to be) 9 SW films, and that they were making the prequels next." So, when they officially announced the films in 95 or 96 (right?), it was not a surprise to me, but I was very excited.

I left for Europe 6 days before TPM came out in theatres, and I knew it would be a couple of years before I could get around to seeing it. I worked at Barnes and Noble just prior and I had early access to the books that were coming out. I had been watching the trailers online in glorious 320x240 QuickTime (I even went to see the trailer before Wing Commander... what a terrible movie that was) and was concerned over what I had seen, but when I read the Terry Brooks novel... I knew the honeymoon was over. Midichlorians? Virgin Birth? Jar Jar? I started hanging out downtown with a sandwhich sign saying "The End of Star Wars is at hand" and warning people to lower their hopes.

My friends and family wrote me to tell me how they didn't think it was as bad as I had made it out to be. My parents had bought the Widescreen VHS so I could watch it when I got back. What shocked me, after two years of hating it without seeing it... was that Jar Jar was not my least favorite character in the movie! IT WAS ANAKIN! I thought that little boy was terrible! I recall a lot of aplogists were saying "What can you expect from a child actor?" and "They looked at everybody, and he was the best!" But the problem with that argument is that I has just watched Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense.

I thought the lightsabre stuff at the end was exciting, but it sort of wrecked people's expectations of "twirling" in a fight. It became "breakdance fighting." I still hate Anakin. Jar Jar is a huge mistake. As others of you have said, the cartoonyness and poop and fart jokes are all misplaced. The enemies are non-threatening...

It was terrible then. It's terrible now. The End of Star Wars was at hand then. It's way past over now. Unless you get that lobotamy I've been looking at...

Broken Menu:

I torrent'ed the DVD-9 version last winter, but it's giving me some issues.

My menu "breaks" when going to the "Deleted & Extended Scenes". It gets to what I presume is the last frame of the animation and then it freezes. I have to turn off the DVD player. It does this on my PC, on my Xbox, and on every DVD player I've tried it on (3 or 4). I figure I must have a corrupted menu file. It also won't go to the Multi-Angle Special Effects Breakdown. It doesn't freeze there, but it doesn't start anything either.

I can play all of the deleted scenes if I jump directly to the Title that they're on.

Can anyone guess which file is corrupted? And then maybe have the good graces to send me the replacements?

Thanks.

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

Just watched 2004 RotJ with the fam and a couple things stood out:

The most glaring was R2-D2 continuity during the Ewok captive scene. He's in the background a lot just standing there until they show him in the foreground and he's leaned back, tied to a strecher and the ewok hatchets him down.

Perhaps the trap door in Jabba's palace should be widened? It's really small and convenient that Luke and a gamorrean happen to be standing on it.

When Luke turns off and throws his saber at the Emperor, the sound of it rattling isn't in the surround sound. The sound comes from the front right speaker, I believe, though the object is now behind and to the right of the "camera."

I saw that the B-Wings were maybe going to be beefed up. In the scene where they head towards DSII and their "s-foils" (?) deploy, maybe the wing should also rotate around the cockpit? Isn't that what B-Wings do?

And finally... could Vader's stub be cleaned up after Luke removes his hand? It's pretty obvious that David Prowse still has two hands and that one of them has a fake wrist over the top of it.

Apologies for any repeats. I will read all 70 pages, but I didn't want to forget what I thought.

Lucas should hand over his original notes and outlines to some novelists and have them shape the novels to fit the real original trilogy from 1977-1983. and also he can hand them over to filmakers and screenwriters that give a damn, and Have them reshoot the prequels. Then we can all pretend the prequels we have never happened or were a bad dream.

...

My dream as well, but the dang thing is that all of the EU writers have adapted so much of the PT, that you can't just rip it out and replace it with "non-suck" and have it go very well.

Where did they come up with the title: "The Phantom Menace"?
Time

I hated the title when I first heard it in late 1998. It made me think of Scooby Doo.

I've since softened on it somewhat. I believe it to mean that the Trade Federation Squabble on Naboo is a "phantom" menace and was simply a means to stir the pot and distract the universe while Palpatine "Shot the moon" by killing all of the Jedi and replacing the Republic with an Empire.

Other interpretations take me back to hating the title, so please don't disagree with me. :)

So.. I just watched it. I tried to torrent the Purist version, but I got the full blown 9GB deal... which is fine. So... just like everybody else... I love, love, love it and yet wish a couple things were different.

1 - Wish there was no prequel music during the lightsabre fight.

2 - Wish the SE goofiness of Han running into a room of 100's of Stormtroopers was gone.

3 - The SE reinserted scene of Biggs in the hanger. Mark Hamill seems like a really goofy kid in this scene and Red Leader is goofy. I wish it gone.

So, about 100 fewer grievances than with the 1997 SE or the 2004 DVD... but still 3.

The Purist edition fixes the first one.

Yeah, I noticed that on the list o' changes. Unfortunately, I liked the other parts of the non-purist edition too much just to go purist... I'm so torn. :(

Fall to the Dark Side?

It's also a great treat to see the Force more deeply explained (albeit the dark side mostly) and used! I can't recommend it highly enough.

The sequel's coming out at the end of this month: DARTH BANE: RULE OF TWO.

I looked for this in audio and was surprised it doesn't look like it's available. Yeah, I'm lame like that recently, only have time for audio books.

Fall to the Dark Side?
Time
The one thing this thread has convinced me of is this:

Storytelling has provided 1000 examples of redemption for every tale of its opposite. And, at least to me, I have a much easier time believing tales of redemption than the examples of falling from grace we've listed here. I guess that shows how storytelling has its roots in morality tales and how optimistic we as a people remain.

What historical figures would you most compare the Original Trilogy Darth Vader to? Genghis Kahn, Alexander the Great, Hitler, Lenin, Enver Hoxha (C3PX will know who that is )?
