Info: 007 - Open Matte Bond Movies...
Time

There is currently no available version of Spectre in Open Matte, all 16:9 ratio broadcasts I know of have benn cropped including Canal+ in Europe of which my initial excitement turned to disappointment. In the UK it has only been shown in the theatrical ratio on both Sky and ITV, streaming versions have been either theatrical or cropped. This could mean it was initially filmed in this ratio or most likely the director only wishes for this version to be released.

Does anyone happen to know if the streaming version of Spectre is open matte?

Saw some screenshots of the Casino Royale full screen dvd on another forum and again it looks cropped but as I don’t have the matching shots to the widescreen to hand at the minute can’t be 100% sure, I’ll check later.

The member who posted over at FE re PSP CR been open matte I think like me (re ITV) is mistaken as the other member who was doing the actual project also didn’t realise my ITV one was actually cropped even though he had PSP cap in hand to compare.

Further, just managed to check a couple of screen compares with the widescreen and the fullscreen is not OM, unfortunately, it is 4:3 cropped (obviously even more than the 16:9 broadcast).

Also seen screenshots from a 16:9 Czech tv broadcast and that is also cropped so take this to mean there is no open matte available.

The Casino Royale PSP disc based on a clip of the credits I’ve seen on Youtube looks cropped to 16:9 rather than Open Matte:

Also, I was initially mistaken regarding the cap I made from ITV in regards to it been Open Matte, it is again, cropped to 16:9 like the PSP disc. I’m not sure if this is the case re other foreign broadcasts that were supposed OM, if so, it looks like only the Full Screen Dvd maybe Open Matte (I haven’t seen that myself to confirm).

Quantum of Solace on the other hand, again from ITV, is definitely Open Matte, although the latest showings of both this and CR have been theatrical 2.35:1.

Skyfall, both the initial Sky (which I capped) and ITV showings were definitely Open Matte as well but ITV again has lately updated to show only the theatrical 2.35:1 (since around the time of the Spectre ITV premiere)

Dracula 1979 - The original theatrical color version (Released)
Time

Hot Damn! Been after a full color version of this since the bluray came out, even tried correcting it myself by boosting the colors in premiere but as others with little success. ITHoTMK, based on that comparison video you are a genius, cannot wait to sample your final result. Please keep us updated.

kk650, any chance of a distribution by the_magicman of your V2 Once Upon A Time in America regrade, just lost it in a hard drive crash and now only have V1 which is’nt as good. V2 has’nt been available anywhere since the paradoxial place went down unlike most of your other older re-grades.

Thanking you in advance.

I’ll second the request for this one, I had the tehparadox links bookmarked for when I had data cap space to burn and the site died before I got the chance to grab it…

Have found one thanks to a kind member giving me a link, but unfortunately it’s been compressed from the original 34gb to 26gb so if anyone else has the full version I would be very grateful for a link.

Idea & Request: The Last Emperor (1987) - has anyone preserved this?
Time

There is already a Bluray from Japan released by Geneon Universal which has both theatrical and extended cuts and the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and has better or similar picture quality to the US Critereon.

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=2004&d2=2003&c=197

There is also a restored (from 4K) 3D Italian disc by Eagle Pictures of the theatrical cut which has slightly more picture area than the Japanese and better grain structure but due to the 3D process is overbright.

Here is a positive user review of the 3D restoration and what it entailed:

But take that with a pinch of salt as other reviews are very poor.

Finally there is an old hdtv cap (which was on usenet as far as I remember) which has the full aperture of the negative (including even more area of picture the director most probably didn’t intend you to see) which is close to 2.50:1 but the picture quality is slightly lacking.

I think overall as other reviewers suggest the Japanese release is closest to a true representation of what the director intended you to see and is a good compromise plus has the extra bonus of including the extended version,

I saw this film in the cinema at the time of its release and it was a spectacle to see, and no bluray in my eyes will be able match that experience.

Info: Back to the Future - without DNR & EE
Time

Just directly capping and watching II now and its censored (the scrot line cut out). Also the old Sky Anytime HD (no logo, very slightly filtered for compression purposes) and Canal+ (has logo but best picture quality overall) caps have better grain retention than the one CH4HD is showing, it looks slightly Dnr’ed but not to the levels of the Bluray.

We could have probably made a really nice Blu-ray from this file, sucks being dead in the water, I miss all our Team projects and shit lol.

The Sky HD version I have was on Usenet (the present retention just misses it by a month or two) so I’m sure other people grabbed it and have it sitting on a hard drive somewhere and hopefully it will re-surface sometime (it was on around the time just before the Sky Star Trek’s were up), the WEB-DL and that file overlaid with each other would create a really nice version.

Note: just gone back and checked, it was actually further back than I thought, it was put up on 17 Dec 2007.

I’m pretty sure the version everybody has sent is the Amazon Web-DL. I share your pain. This movie hasn’t aired on a premium movie channel in the USA in three years now. I’ve been watching for it. Most of the TV airings cut it up and leave out entire scenes to make room for more commercials. The Web-DL version Dark Jedi sent information on is by far the best I’ve seen. Honestly I still prefer the 1.85:1 version of this film to the original 2.35:1 version too. I wish they had gone that route on Amazon.

But it was filmed 2.35:1 not Super 35 so that would mean it is cropped, not Open Matte, if it was I would agree with you on 1.85:1 over 2.35:1 but not when its cropped, OAR all the way on that point. As said the AMZN WEB-DL in my eyes is actually very good compared to the present Sky version and is not far behind what a Bluray version would look like, all in all a good compromise. The 18 mbps Sky version I had may have been slightly better on compression (from memory) but its downfall was it is slightly filtered and the AMZN is alot better on that front.

Love this film as well and can’t fathom why there isn’t a Bluray yet. The AMZN WEB-DL (much better than the low bitrate iTunes) is the best version available for this at present as far as I am aware, Sky Movies nowadays is not the best picture quality. I used to have a high bitrate Sky HD cap from around 2006/7 when they used to have 18mbps constant bitrate which I unfortunately lost in a hard drive crash and is way past retention on Usenet which I’d love to get ahold of again. Saying that, from what I remember I think the AMZN one beats it as Sky even then slightly filtered there output for compression reasons. I used to be able to capture Sky HD directly using PC Sat card (only UK Freesat HD at present) and now only can capture through hdmi capture card from Sat Box.

Would love to have that PM as well Dark Jedi in case you have info re a better version. Would be much appreciated.
